What’s on LGfL for Secondary Schools?

Premium learning resources, digital collections and projects for e-learning This booklet illustrates examples of the online teaching and learning resources provided with the London Grid for Learning (LGfL) education broadband service available to subscribing London schools. London Local Authorities and schools working together as the London Grid for Learning have provided an array of high quality online learning resources which are available to all LGfL connected schools and included as part of the comprehensive LGfL2.0 education broadband service. The resources or ‘content’ come from three main sources: 1) The LGfL has created, licensed or commissioned a range of premium digital resources

focussed on supporting learning and teaching in the Secondary phase.

2) Supported by LGfL, London LAs and teachers have produced online content resources that include the best and latest practice in using a range of software and hardware across the curriculum. These resources are then made available across the region through the LGfL community.

3) The London Grid for Learning is also a member of the National Educational Network, which

brings together all the regions of the UK, each with its own unique content – available for all to share, and accessible via the LGfL Content Management System.

A carefully selected panel of practitioners drawn from across the region scrupulously evaluates a wide range of materials and only selects those resources which are assessed as being of the highest standard for use by LGfL connected schools throughout the London region. Selection by LGfL is widely regarded as an accolade of considerable significance by education content publishers. Schools can therefore be assured that time given to familiarising with these resources is well invested.

Access Rights

In most cases, access is automatic when viewing the resources in school (on grid) for schools with a LGfL broadband connection. There are some exceptions to this general rule, where a LGfL USO log in is requested even when accessing the resources in school. E.g. Us Online eSafety and the Creative Toolkit resources. Look for the letter in brackets after each title which describes the level of access:

• O means open access; and a username and password is not needed at all.

• USO indicates the item is ‘premium content’ - access is still open and automatic for online use within any LGfL connected school, but an LGfL ‘USO’ username and password is needed for access from home.*

• S means this is a special licence and access is restricted to within school only. *a small number of resources ask for a USO log in even when a user is in school e.g. Celebrating US, Us Online and the Creative Toolkit.

Teachers and pupils at connected schools can access LGfL content anywhere on-line using their LGfL Unified Sign On (USO) username and password. For further information about the LGfL service visit www.uso.lgfl.net.

Using the LGfL ‘Sign-on’ Software

The London Grid for Learning’s USO ‘sign-on’ software enables every LGfL user to use premium software even when out of school. Let’s say you wished to access Longmans GCSE Maths from your home:

• As soon as you click on the GCSE Maths item in the KS4 Numeracy menu, you will get this dialogue box

• Type in your LGfL USO

username and password and select the ‘Login button

• If you get this dialogue box, or one like it, select the Yes button

• You are now able to access premium content on LGfL

NB: This does not apply to British Pathe where the licence allows school-based access only.

5

Where to find the content • The URL for the London Grid

for Learning is www.lgfl.net

• From the home page, select the Premium Content link from the box on the right

• From the Content Grid (see below), choose your Key Stage and subject

• From the Key Stage subject menu, select the content you want to access.

The Content Grid

The Content Grid is simple to use. For example, to access materials for Key Stage 3 Science click on the green arrow on the KS3 row below Science.

To access Foundation Stage resources, or resources on the National Education Network, click on the tabs at the top of the table.

7

● Mathematical Association resources on LGfL (O) In collaboration with Intel and The Mathematical Association, the Mathematical Toolkit and Number Line have been designed specifically to support the teaching and learning of mathematics for pupils at Key Stage 3. The tools are now available as fully featured online tools in the LGfL Maths Kit. www.mathskit.lgfl.net

● Number Line The Number Line tool offers a dynamic environment in which teachers and pupils can explore numbers and relationships between them. In its simplest use, number lines can be created quickly and easily - the display can be in decimal and/or fractional notation and the numbers can also be hidden. A point on the line can be dragged along the number line and its exact position revealed as a decimal to a chosen number of places. Further points can be positioned on the line and the environment will support pupils to make connections between related points on the line and begin to generalise about relationships using simple algebraic rules.

● Coordinates and Graphing Coordinate graphs can be easily created on a specified set of axes by a mouse click or a tap on an interactive whiteboard. Where appropriate, graphs of algebraic functions can be superimposed, encouraging pupils’ conjectures. Up to five colour-coded functions can be plotted on any set of axes and the table of values are displayed alongside the graphs. Digital still images and video clips can be imported as a background onto which points can be plotted and investigated. Used in this way, real images and videos can be explored and connections made between the shape and the mathematical function that shares that shape.

● 2-D Shapes

This tool allows the teacher or pupil to create 2-D geometric objects such as quadrilaterals, circles, triangles, lines, arcs, ray segments and vectors on a co-ordinate grid of a specified scale. Once plotted, the vertices can be labelled and the internal angles, side lengths, area and perimeter revealed. Shapes can then be translated, rotated, reflected and enlarged on the co-ordinate grid using the transformation features of the tool. Each time a shape is transformed, a ghost of its previous position is left on the screen supporting the investigation of sequences of transformations.

The Video upload service Video Central is an invaluable tool to manage videos within an online environment.

A wide variety of audio and video files can be uploaded and then viewed either by URL hyperlink or via an embed code – allowing videos to be placed within web pages and the London MLE. Files can be set for ‘public access’ and therefore can be searchable creating LGfL’s own ‘You Tube’ style video database.

● Copyright Copywrongs (O) Copyright is all around us: on the web, in books and magazines, in games and films and photographs; and art works and music, and, and, and ... you simply can't get away from it.

• Copyright applies when we are using other people's materials AND when we 're-use' them and put them in our own work.

• Copyright applies in school, out of school and 'at home' - EVERYWHERE.

• So whether you are - a learner, teacher or school - you have to MANAGE, not ignore copyright responsibility.

Copyright Copywrongs offers a central place for advice and guidance on how to manage the complex issues surrounding copyright in a school context. www.copyright.lgfl.net Digital Collections ● The Guardian and Observer news archive (USO)

LGfL has secured a perpetual licence for all LGfL connected secondary schools to access the Guardian and Observer Digital Archive, making available online every page, every article, every advert of the Guardian since 1821 and the Observer - the oldest Sunday paper in the world – since 1791. Previously only available on microfiche or in fragile bound copies, you can now take a journey through time from the execution of Marie Antoinette to the first man on the moon at the click of a mouse. The Digital Archive includes over 1.2 million pages of articles, photographs, cartoons, illustrations and advertisements up to the year 2000. Teachers and pupils with an LGfL USO can enjoy 24/7 online access free of charge. www.newsarchive.lgfl.net

● British Pathe (S) British Pathe provided a weekly newsreel which appeared in every cinema from 1896 to 1976. They have digitised these news stories to provide a unique online resource covering all manner of topics from sport to fashion, politics to war. The site has over 3,500 digitised video clips and nearly 12m stills, all downloadable in hi-resolution format at no cost if you are connected to LGfL. www.britishpatheinfo.lgfl.net ● Audio Network (USO) The Audio Networks collection of 40,000 tracks of original music, sorted by style and genre,

provides both a solution to the problem of copyright and a rich, high quality resource widely used within the media industry. Search for something ‘peaceful’ to set the tone as children enter the room or perhaps ‘spooky’ to open your Halloween production. An otherwise extremely expensive resource made free to use for LGfL connected schools. www.audio.lgfl.net

● e-library (O) If you have a library card, most London boroughs have licences to provide 24/7 online access to a wealth of reference works. These include the Britannica Encyclopaedia, Oxford Reference and more. You need the number on your library card to log on to the resources. If you haven't got one, join your local library now! To access, select the borough which gave you your library card from the list on www.elibrary.lgfl.net

● LGfL Gallery (O) There is no such thing as ‘copyright free’ resources - so LGfL has sought to provide digital resources that can be used in an educational context without breaking the law. For example, the LGfL gallery offers high quality, high resolution digital photographs for staff and students to incorporate into their everyday learning activities.

National Education Network content Your school’s connection to the London Grid, or possession of an LGfL ‘USO’ username and password, gives you access to the open content of the other twelve Learning Grids across the UK. ● Shared content on the National Education Network Find this from the NEN tab on LGfL’s content grid or directly at www.nen.gov.uk/tandl Use the NEN content table to search for free content.

The London Grid for Learning is a founder member of the National Education Network, the UK collaborative network for education, providing schools with a safe, secure and reliable learning environment and direct access to a growing range of online services and content.

So much to see – so little time To make the best use of LGfL resources and services, both within and outside of school, it is essential for each user to have their own LGfL login credentials, their ‘USO’, or Unified Sign On. This is one username and password for each teacher, and for each pupil, which gives access to all LGfL resources, even when outside of school (except one or two which are marked (S)). USO is also the key to many other LGfL services such as a brilliant email service, masses of online storage ‘in the cloud’, and even free Microsoft ‘Office’ applications, for use on line. Teachers need their USO to upload videos to ‘Video Central’ and Podcasts. If your school is one of the many which uses the LGfL ‘London MLE’, then your USO can be the key to that as well. To learn more about LGfL’s unique USO system please visit www.uso.lgfl.net – it will not cost you a penny extra, it is all included with the LGfL broadband connection.

We hope you and your pupils enjoy using all that is provided for you on LGfL. Please ensure your school is deriving the maximum benefit from the resources that come with your London Grid for Learning education broadband connection.
