Langley Good TimesCruise-in September 6This show was started in 1997 as a way to encourage people to visit downtown Langley and to bring more business to the downtown shops and restaurants. Our show,

Spotlight on local author:

Tiana WarnerWebsite: www.tianawarner.com

Tiana Warner, 26-year-old Langley author, is already getting critical acclaim for her teen fantasy novel. Ice Massacre, released September 18th, received a glowing 5-star review from Foreword Clarion, who called it “a truly exceptional book.”

The story is based on the real legend of mermaids: that they’re supernaturally beautiful so they can lure sailors to their deaths. “They’re sea demons,” says Warner. “I was inspired by the idea of what might happen if an island shared its surrounding water with such a dangerous species.”

With supernatural elements running wild in teen novels, Warner has taken an approach to mermaids not often seen in movies and literature. Since females are immune to a mermaid’s allure, the island decides to send female warriors to battle them. The book features an almost-entirely female cast.

“Meela is an eighteen-year-old aboriginal girl with a big secret,” says Warner. “Her journey is one of loyalty and self-discovery.”

When asked what advice she would offer to aspiring authors, Warner said, “Write every day. Even if it’s only twenty minutes. I wrote Ice Massacre by getting up at 6am daily and writing for an hour before work. I put a note over my alarm clock that said, ‘I am a bestselling author,’ and that motivated me to get moving. Believe in yourself and work hard, and you will succeed. I promise.”

Connect with @tianawarner on Twitter, and be sure to join us at the mermaid-themed launch party on September 18th (details:www.tianawarner.com).

Interpreters will share tales of misfortune in Fort Langley’s cemeteries, streets, and inside the spooky Hudson’s Bay Company fort. Tours cover stories of Hudson’s Bay Company workers’ long dead, but still lingering spirits, including Louisa and William Emptage. Many claim to have seen Louisa in early mornings searching for William at the Fort Langley cemetery. If you don’t manage to glimpse these two, the tour ends back at Fort Langley National Historic Site in the site’s most haunted building, which some claim is home to a young boy’s ghost who still wants to play.

Finish the tour with a hot drink around the bonfire.

How many years apart are you guys? Two and a half years.

Where did you go to school? Were you always together in school?Ryleigh: We went to Brookswood. Robyn went there all the way to grade twelve but I started doing online schooling in grade 11 and just

from the school. We both had a few tough times in high school but having music always made us feel better.

You taught yourself how to play guitar?Robyn: Yes, well, I spent 4 years at Belmont Elementary learning Ukulele which made me want to learn how to play guitar. My parents bought me a little red guitar for Christmas and I learned on that using YouTube and the internet. I searched chord charts and learned that way.

What got you interested in singing?Belmont Elementary was a very musical school. Mr. Thomas was our teacher and he ran ukulele classes, and band classes for the students. We did all of that, choir, Christmas concerts, Ryleigh played Lily St. Regis in the play “Annie” in grade 7. We always wanted to sing but never expected we would do it together. One day Robyn was in her room singing and playing guitar and Ryleigh started harmonizing to the melody! Our parents thought it sounded great and suggested we get together.

Ryleigh: If I could just sing 80’s cover tunes I would. We just put 3 of them into our set which makes me very happy. I love everything about the 80’s, the clothes, the big hair, everything. Our manager was, and is, a member of Stonebolt which was a band big in the 70’s and into the 80’s. We got to play with him on stage, it was so much fun, I could not get the smile off my face.Robyn: I would love to sing with Miranda Lambert, Loretta Lynn or Dolly Parton one day…or all three! Ever since I watched Coal Miner’s Daughter I have loved Loretta Lynn. Also big on our list

songs!

Robyn: LANGLEY got us to Nashville! We went all over Langley and put up posters promoting a big show and everybody came out to see us, pretty sure the show was sold out or close to it, at Brookswood High’s Theater. We raised enough money to go to Nashville where we were there for 10 days with our manager. It was such an incredible experience. The second we got off the plane we could hear Miranda Lambert music playing at the airport. We both love her music!Ryleigh: We had a lot of awesome song writing sessions which I had never really done before; Robyn writes most of our songs. We

We also came away from Nashville with a huge love for the place and 4 brand new songs that we’ve been in the studio recording. We have plans on releasing one soon which we are very excited about.

What is it like working together as sisters

sometimes but as soon as we get on stage there is a chemistry that makes us best friends again. Ryleigh: We spend so much time together in the back seat of my parents car and I am always telling Robyn to stop putting her stuff on me. Plus she gets car sick so she has to sit in the middle, squishing me. Our parents help drive us around everywhere which is awesome, it helps us get us to where we need to be on gig days.

Any tour plans?

excited. We are hoping to go as far and wide as we can and our managers will make it happen. We have a great team! We’ve had a pretty busy summer so far, making a couple trips to Alberta already and plan on going back again to attend the CCMA’s in September. On Aug 7th we opened up for Trooper at Penticton’s Peach Festival with members of Stonebolt (David Wills and Ray Roper) joining with our band for the show! After our show Trooper asked us to join them for “Raise a Little Hell,” we had such a blast there singing for over 7000+ people. There is a video clip of us with Trooper on our FB Page. “Robyn&Ryleigh”

What are your fans like?Robyn: We have a wide range of age groups who seem to really like our music. We have little girls who come out to our shows and we have people our parent’s and Grandparents age who come out to support us as well, not to say they are old or anything haha. We had

following us for 4 years. I gave her my concert pick and she was so excited. It gives me goose bumps and makes me well up with happy tears when that happens. It is so cool and inspirational!

Robyn: Long & McQuade...it’s like a candy store to me! We even were lucky enough to pick up some awesome band members there too! I also enjoy Campbell Valley Park. I love to jog, walk and run there. It’s my sanctuary. Other than that, the Brookswood Starbucks. Ryleigh: The Ruan Thai Restaurant in Brookswood Village is amazing, great food, love this place. Recording at the studio of course and I also enjoy just being at home hanging out with the family.

We would like to thank Robyn and Ryleigh for their time

and cannot wait to see where their music takes them!

What’s On! Langley met up with Coach Trevor Moreno to discuss The Devils successful season.Congratulations on such a successful season! You must be very proud.

We had a great group of girls who really bonded this season. At the beginning of the season, one of our players, Katelynn started having aches and pain in her back, it seemed like it was just “growing pains” but got progressively worse. Her parents were taking her for all kinds of therapy treatments to try and help. At the end of April she became very sick so they took her to the hospital in Abbotsford. Within a few days they were informed that Katelyn had stage 4 RMS cancer. Our team adopted the slogan “We play for Katelynn”. When we would show up at tournaments, kids we had never even seen before would come up to us with bags of coins to done to the Bartlett family. The whole league really came together for Katelynn.

How is she doing now?

Katelynn is doing a lot better, she is able to come out and run around with the other girls which is really nice to see. She gets tired but she’s out and about and got to have lunch with Team Canada when they were here playing the US at the Canadian Open.

How long have you been coaching these kids?

I’ve coached some of the kids for up to 4 years and known many of them for several years. Every year we have an open tryout in February and we see a lot of kids. Last year we had 24 kids tryout and my assistant coach and I had to select 11 players for the team.

What worked this year that hasn’t worked in previous years?

We had a slightly smaller team of 11 instead of the usual 13 and the dynamic in the dugout this year was really respectful. The kids all got along really well. We establish 20 rules at the beginning of each season and the girls have to sign a contract. If we ever have a situation, we can refer back to the contract that they signed. We’re developing life skills with these kids. It was quite an emotional season for our team, especially at the end of the provincials when we were accepting our trophy. There were 19 teams at the tournament and many of the teams knew about Katelynn’s story. These teams battled

to step back and see them all come together in the end and realize these are all kids.

How important is communication with parents in sports?

I would say the technical aspect of the sport is only about 50% of the

other teams. I meet with the parents at the beginning of the season and make sure expectations are very clear. They know they can approach me and request a meeting if they don’t like some aspect of how I am coaching. I have a different philosophy for league play than I do for round robin games and if we get down to the nitty gritty on Sunday they know what to expect.

What is next for you?

I won’t be coaching this season because I will be serving as president of the league. Together with my Vice President, Kimberley Payne, we are starting an after school program. What we want to do is get as many girls between the ages of 16 and 18 and pair each of them up with 5 younger girls to learn the game. This is being supported by Softball Canada and Softball BC and working together with the parent groups at each school. We hope this will get kids off of their ipads

Katelynn is currently having therapy for her condition. Both of her parents have had to leave their jobs in order to be by her side and still be there for their other children.

Langley has produced some top equestrian riders over the years. We were lucky enough to catch up with Langley Equestrian Brian Morton and talk about his career in Equestrian Show Jumping and where he would like to go next!

WO: When and how did you start riding?BM: I started riding at the age of six in Vancouver with Maynards Pony Meadows. I did a week long riding camp and I really got hooked. There was something about it that I knew was for me. I able to this direction very early, I knew I wanted this to be my life and my career.

WO: You have had a lot of success in your career, what is next for you? BM: I am at the stage where the season is just hitting full stride. We had a really successful two weeks at Thunderbird and now we’re getting ready to leave for Spruce Meadows. I’ll have the same two horses there: Atlantis T, a young, very exciting

I have high hopes for both of them.

WO: What level is Atlantis T at now?BM: He has just started at the international level so he jumps

fabulous in his talent and ability; it’s just a matter of experience and mileage now. Thunderbird was a great start for him. Spruce Meadows will just take us one step farther down the road to becoming a full-scale international horse.

WO: You partnered with Mark Laskin to create Equimark, how did this partnership begin?BM: I have known and respected Mark for many years. I was coming on to the scene in the sport just as Mark was ending his riding career. My trainer at the time, Rick Maynard, took me to a show at Milner Downs. Mark had three horses in the

relationship started out as that of a student and teacher and it was his feedback that took me to the next level. I am very proud of our friendship and our partnership in business. We are just about to start our seventh year.

WO: Have you competed at HITS Thermal in California?BM: Yes. I believe in having an off season. I think it is healthy both for horses and for riders but at a high level of competition you aren’t going to start each season at the same level as you

Del Mar National which is run by Dale Harvey to get back in the swing of things. It worked fabulously this year. I had one of my best springs ever this year in terms of results.

WO: What is your ultimate goal?

like I am close enough to reach out and touch it, even if I can’t grasp it just yet. I want to have a life-long career in this sport.

WO: Do you teach?Yes I love to teach!I really enjoy all of the break down and analysis that is required to teach show jumping, and in the end teaching helps me to better understand the sport as a rider.Equimark was founded to help experienced riders improve and become highly competitive. We believe that success in this sport is due to partnerships. You can only go as far as your partner is able to go. You need to be paired with the right horses. Thanks to Mark Laskin’s experience in the sport, he is able to very quickly evaluate the needs and goals of the client

highest quality horse for them.

WO: What do you do outside of riding?BM: My wife is Austrian so we try to get to Europe as often as we can to visit her family. They are lovely people who take us in and take care of us. We don’t have to worry about a thing when we are with them. When I’m home, I like to go for hikes in

WO: What is your biggest accomplishment to date?BM: The two things I am most proud of are my victory in the

career. The fact that he is doing that at 17 years of age is remarkable. I’m proud of him for his heart and desire to keep going but I’m also proud of Equimark’s management for keeping him sound and able to continue.

WO: What role has Thunderbird Show Park played in your success?BM: Thunderbird is such a wonderful venue for competitors

it is right here in our back yard. The management is excellent and the venue just keeps getting better. I can’t imagine where I would be if it weren’t for Thunderbird and the people there. It would be great to see more people come out to the shows, they have plenty of seating and it’s a great place to spend the day.

We would like to thank Brian Morton for sitting down with us, and we would like to wish him the best of success in the upcoming show seasons.

1. How on earth did you get started?

It was February 14th, 1985. I was in my third year at the University of Alberta and had two part-time jobs, one at the Woolco smoke shop and the other at Chi Chi’s Mexican restaurant. My friend, Steffany Hanlen, called to ask me if I would check coats that night at Goose Loonies Party and Playhouse. It was a bar where the staff wore costumes and performed. Three weeks later I auditioned as Tina Turner performing "Better Be Good to Me" and a few weeks after that I was hired to perform every night. I happily left university and my other jobs and put my whole heart into entertaining. The club was owned by Triple Five Corporation who had just built the world’s largest mall. I performed at all of their properties for three years before becoming a self-employed entertainment entrepreneur.

2. Were you involved in singing/

dancing as a child?

I didn’t want to take singing or dancing classes. I made up songs and dances of my own. I was producing my own shows when I was fi ve years old. I had a tickle trunk full of great costumes. I was a promoter as well, convincing neighbors to watch my performances in the basement.

3. Tell us about growing up – where

did you grow up?

I was born in Edmonton but I never grew up. I didn’t talk until I was three and then I never stopped. I was very creative and expressive and loved art as well as drama. I starred in school plays but I was shy socially. Kids used to say that I only got the lead roles because my Mom made the best costumes. I did a Sonny and Cher routine at recess with another girl. Sometimes I had to be Sonny. I was the most popular babysitter because I entertained the kids and created new stories instead of reading them.

4. How/when did you realize that this was something that you could make a career out of?

The fi rst three years of my career were easy because I had a steady salary as an in-house performer. Then I decided to move to Calgary and start my own business performing at corporate events and bars. I also worked in a talent agency for a while and learned about marketing and sales. I was really determined to make it on my own. I struggled for a few years. I worked incredibly hard. My success really started after I moved to Vancouver in 1990. This has been my full time living for almost 30 years.

5. Who is your favourite character to impersonate?

Why does everyone ask that question? I can’t decide. I love the variety. They are all strong, diverse characters. Celine is really funny. Marilyn is soft, sweet, vulnerable and charming.. I love the contrast between Cher and Julie Andrews and I’m surprised by how much I look them. Dolly Parton

and Madonna inspire me. I love Tina Turner and Janis Joplin songs. And Liza Minnelli is a kooky fun mess!

6. What is your favourite part of what you do?

I love making people laugh and getting them to play along. Every show is different that way. I have a blast when I’m on stage. I’m really present in the moment with the audience. I also love travelling, especially in Canada. I’m really grateful that I’ve been all over this great country. And I really really love wigs!

7. Do you have any new impersonations that you might be working on?

I spoke with Sarah McLachlan a while ago and she encouraged me to impersonate her. She’s a really good sport. She gave me some ideas for a comedy routine and said she wouldn’t be offended if I made fun of her.

8. How long does it take you to start, work on the mannerisms, voice etc for a character?

It takes forever. Working on characters is an ongoing process. I always feel like I could do better. I’m critical of myself. I feel like I should keep improving. There are characters like Barbra Streisand, Lady Gaga and Shania Twain that I’ve worked on for years but am unhappy with, so I leave them out of most shows.

9. Tell us about being named

entertainer of the year! What an accomplishment!

I was nominated four times before I won. I thought I would lose again, so I wasn’t going to fl y to Toronto for the Awards Gala. I ended up going when Ken Kristoffersen, one of the world’s top event planners, called to encourage me to attend. The audience was full of wonderful friends from the special event industry and I felt love and gratitude when I won.

Cranberry Festival: October 11, 10 am - 4 pm

Parks Canada is offering visitors 50% off admission to celebrate Cranberry Festival. Make the roots of the cranberry part of your Cranberry Festival tradition.

Along Glover Road in the village of Fort Langley, pick up some fresh cranberries for your Thanksgiving feast and browse nearly 100 vendors’ wares in the village of Fort Langley’s biggest event of the year! At Fort Langley National Historic Site, watch a barrel-making demonstration, try cranberry bannock, play cranberry-related games and more.

Here is a historical background about Cranberries at the fort: Before Fort Langley was built, the Stó:lô people of the Fraser Valley harvested bog cranberries and traded with other Aboriginal people.

When managers of the Hudson’s Bay Company observed the price cranberries were selling for in San Francisco, they began trading with the Stó:lô as well.

“We can sell as many cranberries as you can possibly furnish at from 75¢ to 1 dollar per gallon. A barrel being equal to 33 to 42 dollars, a much better article than salmon, therefore get as many as you possibly can ...” James Douglas to James Yale,

Dec 7, 1852 Fort Langley’s coopers turned out the barrels for cranberries - as many as 725 of them in 1855, and the Stó:lô brought in the berries, but the California market wasn’t as rich as Douglas had thought. The best price for Fort Langley’s cranberries was 55 cents a gallon, or $13 for a 24 gallon barrel. Still, it was more than a barrel of salmon could be sold for and the little red berries contributed to the

the Fraser River gold rush.

most of the bogs have disappeared, cranberries are once again being harvested along the Fraser. The variety which is now commercially grown is different from the wild cranberry shipped

the same.

Stop in at Fort Langley National Historic Site to hear the story

how the barrels which carried these products were made.

Living in the Lower Mainland we live in an area that can be impacted by earthquakes – yet so few of us are prepared? It terrifi es me to think what it will be like after the big one strikes, hospitals will be overwhelmed, roads and bridges will shut down, and grocery stores will close. What about your family – what plans do you have to connect with them, what emergency supplies do you have stored away, who will pick your kids up from school if you are unable and what about your pets home alone – what plans do you have for them?

Dismal as it sounds – this will be our reality in the aftermath of an earthquake, but it doesn’t have to be like this. With proper planning and preparation you can ensure you, your family and pets will better survive whatever disaster you are faced with. What supplies do you need to survive for a week without outside help? Gather these supplies and safely store them away. Make a note of the items that expire. Get into the habit of checking your emergency supplies when the

clocks change - this will ensure your supplies are ready when needed.

For those of you on medications – you have some extra planning to do. I am a diabetic and if I don’t get my insulin I will not survive. Insulin cannot be kept in a kit as it needs to be refrigerated. I keep my diabetic supplies in my kit and its one extra step to grab the insulin from the fridge as I evacuate. If you take medications check with your pharmacist or doctor before storing.

Most injuries in an earthquake happen from people doing the wrong thing. Drop, Cover and Hold On needs to become second nature to all of us. This will better protect you and your family during an earthquake.

You need to make sure your family and pets are prepared. You don’t want to be facing an earthquake with no plans or supplies wishing you had prepared. Do it NOW. Once the earthquake strikes – it will be too late. Your family is counting on you!
