While 2020 was a year to
forget for so many around
the globe, the family behind
Queensland-based Gleeson
Thoroughbred Connections will only have the
fondest of memories when looking back on the
last 12 months.
Owners Wally and Jill, who run the relatively
small-scale breeding operation alongside
their sons Jacob, Simon and Tom, had the
breakthrough year they had long dreamed of,
courtesy of the remarkable Rothfire (Rothesay)
producing one of 2020’s greatest rags to riches
stories.
As a yearling, the Gleeson-bred Rothfire
was unwanted, unfashionable and rejected
from even the most minor sales.
After being overlooked by sales
representatives and bloodstock agents,
trainer Rob Heathcote took a chance on him,
purchasing the son of Rothesay (Fastnet Rock)
for $10,000. Continued on page 2>>

Twelve months later, exceeding
the wildest dreams of both Heathcote and the Gleeson family, Rothfire
pulversived his fellow two-year-olds to take out the J J Atkins Stakes (Gr 1,
1400m) by over three lengths.
It was a result that put Gleeson Thoroughbred Connections on the
map and, ahead of being represented at the fast-approaching Magic
Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale, Jacob Gleeson reflected on what was a
breakthrough year for the Chinchilla operation, who have between 15 to
20 mares at their property each year.
“2020 was a breakout year. Not only Rothfire, but from that crop of
foals we’ve also had Alleboom who won down the straight at Flemington
on Cup day,” Gleeson told ANZ Bloodstock News.
“We’ve had another horse called Love For All who ran second in a
Group 3 race in New
Zealand only a few
weeks ago. So from a
crop of only 13 foals
in that year group,
we’ve had a Group
1 winner, a Group
3 placegetter and a
Flemington winner
on Cup day.
“That’s a pretty good year in terms of a second crop of 13 horses. We’ve
also had a couple of nice two-year-olds step out early and we think there’s
improvement in them.
“There’s a really nice one that we sold at Magic Millions last year called
Ghost Hunter with Ron Quinton. He’s owned by Ray Gall, who is of I Am
Invincible fame, and they’ve got a big rap on him.
“He’s just trialled and looks like stepping out in the next few months,
so we’re very excited about him as well.
“As a breeding operation we’ve certainly turned a corner in the last
12 to 18 months and, while this will be a smaller year for us in terms of
numbers through sales, there’s still certainly still plenty of quality.”
Gleeson Thoroughbreds have one lot going through the ring at the
Gold Coast Yearling Sale later this month, a Menari (Snitzel) filly out of
Iadore Tantrums (Commands).
The story behind the filly, who Gleeson describes as an “absolute cracker”,
has multiple strands to it. On the sire's side, Run To The Rose (Gr 2, 1200m)
winner and Golden Rose (Gr 1, 1400m) third Menari is subfertile and not as
widely represented across the sale as his connections would have hoped for.
While on the dam’s side, Iadore Tantrums was tragically found dead in
the paddock after producing the Menari filly - her fourth foal, with a snake
bite the suspected cause.
“It’s an interesting story,” Gleeson explained. “We are relatively new to
the breeding game and a couple of years ago we

were fortuitous enough to meet George
Altimonte, who we consider to be one of the great breeders in Australia.
“We met him at the Inglis sale and he was talking about breeding in
general and raving about Menari and what a great horse he was. At that
point we decided we needed to send him a mare and we chose Iadore
Tantrums.
“His fertility was quite disappointing but we were lucky enough to get
her in foal off a very early cover.
“The mare herself has been a bit unlucky, but she’s from one of those
great Woodlands, Sudden Impulse families that’s produced Clang and
Strategic. We just love those really good producing families.
“Unfortunately, she died in the paddock. We think she might’ve been
bitten by a snake. We just went down to look at them one morning and she
was unfortunately just dead.
“So we’ve lost her, but this filly is an absolute cracker. My father, who I
think is a very good horseman, has just been raving about her intelligence.
He says this is one of the most intelligent fillies we’ve ever had, so she
certainly fits the bill there. She’s a really good physical and a lovely walker.
“The interesting thing is there’s a bit of irony in it. We bred Rothfire,
who won the Run To The Rose and beat Menari’s race-record time!”
Menari, who stood at Newgate Farm for a 2020 service fee of $16,500
(inc. GST), is proving more fertile but is only serving small books.
As a result, his progeny for sale at the Gold Coast is few and far
between, and Gleeson explained the effect he thinks that will have on his
filly and Menari’s other progeny up for auction.
“I’d like to think it will make the filly more valuable,” he said.
“There’s some people that will argue a subfertile stallion might not be
a good proposition as the stallion isn’t going to get a kickalong, but
when you’ve got a horse that’s
got a mystique about him that
Menari has, I think the small
number of foals will work in
our favour.
“He was a very popular and
highly-regarded racehorse so
I’m quite confident that will
work in our favour.
“I think ours as a physical is
going to be a standout. Looking
at the photos of some of the
others, I think she looks most
like the stallion out of all the
Menari pictures I’ve seen.”
Reflecting on the year as a whole, Gleeson recognises the tremendous
domino effect that their first stakes winner has had on the business.
When asked whether their 2020 success has unlocked the door to an
array of future opportunities, Gleeson responded: “Absolutely. My brother
was only at the races yesterday and there are good Brisbane trainers
interested to hear what sort of yearlings we’re putting through the sales.
“We’re now being recognised at both races and sales alike and what a
horse like Rothfire has done for our business already is just phenomenal.
We’re so thankful and privileged to have been part of the Rothfire story.”
Rothfire landed the Run To The Rose first-up this preparation before
finishing fourth in the Golden Rose. Unfortunately, with a start in the $15
million The Everest (1200m) looming, the star three-year-old was found to
have fractured a sesamoid bone in the Golden Rose, ruling him out for a
prolonged period of time.
His recovery is going smoothly, although connections are cautious
not to get their hopes up as an injury of this kind is not plain sailing to
recover from.
“My understanding is he is still down in Sydney, but he’s out in the
paddock and he’s sound,” said Gleeson. “He’s going to have a good few
months in the paddock and then the plan is to bring him up to Queensland
to one of the local pre-trainers that Rob Heathcote used, a very good
horseman in Kevin Thomas as Washpool, and they’ll slowly start putting
him through his paces there.
“We’re all crossing our fingers, but we all realise how a serious injury
like this can be detrimental. He certainly shows that he’s tenacious enough
to have the potential to come back from it.”

Victorian jockeys unable to fly-in, fly-out to QueenslandVictorian jockeys who plan to ride in
Queensland will no longer be permitted to
arrive on race-day after Racing Queensland
adopted recommendations made by the state
government on Saturday afternoon. Victorian
jockeys wishing to ride in the state must now
return a mandatory negative Covid-19 test
before being permitted to do so, meaning
those riders who are set to participate at the
Gold Coast this weekend and at the Magic
Millions meeting the following Saturday
will have to arrive in Queensland at least a
day prior to the respective fixtures. “If they
are flying in from Victoria, the expectation
from Racing Queensland, following the
government’s advice, is they present for
a Covid-19 test and self-isolate until it’s
negative,” a Racing Queensland spokesman
said. The new directive meant local jockeys
Ben Thompson and Steph Thornton were
unable to ride at the Sunshine Coast
yesterday, with both having flown to Victoria
for Christmas. Neither had time to undertake
a Covid-19 test and have the results returned
between the announcement being made and
the Sunshine Coast fixture getting underway.
Both Thompson and Thornton were set to be
tested yesterday afternoon and they hope to
have their results returned within 24 hours
before being cleared to ride at Doomben on
Thursday.
Magic Millions favourite trials at RosehillShe’s All Class (I Am Invincible), who holds
favouritism for the Magic Millions 2YO Classic
(RL, 1200m) at the Gold Coast on January
16, will trial over 900 metres at Rosehill this
morning with Kerrin McEvoy to ride. The Chris
Waller-trained She’s All Class stamped herself
as the likely favourite for the juvenile feature
with an emphatic victory in one of the key lead-
ups, the Magic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic (RL,
1100m) last month. However, whether McEvoy
can retain the race-day ride on the filly depends
on if the Queensland government opens its
borders to those from Greater Sydney on
January 8, something that seems increasingly
unlikely given the emergence of a new cluster
in Berala. She’s All Class is the $4 favourite with
TAB for the $2 million contest.
Neasham to have two MM Classic runnersSaturday’s impressive Eagle Farm winner
Queen Of Wizardry (Not A Single Doubt) will
be joined by stablemate Ghostwriter (I Am
Invincible) in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic
with trainer Annabel Neasham confirming
that both Aquis-owned horses will press on
to the juvenile feature. Ghostwriter sits ninth
in the order of entry and is guaranteed a start
and, given vets failed to find anything wrong
after he finished six lengths from Alpine Edge
(Better Than Ready) in the BJ McLachlan
Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m), he will press on to
the Classic. He will be joined by Queen Of
Wizardry, who looms as a leading contender
on the basis of her debut victory. Ranch
Hand (Fastnet Rock), who finished third as
odds-on favourite to Queen Of Wizardry last
weekend, is a possibility to press on to the
Classic but whether he gains a berth depends
on what happens in the Aquis Gold Nugget
(1100m) and the Aquis Gold Pearl (1100m)
this weekend.
Thornton eyes Magic Millions paydayThe Queen Of Wizardry mount will be retained
by Steph Thornton, who is building a handy
book of rides as she looks for her biggest day
in the saddle at the Gold Coast. The 21-year-
old will also partner Gotta Kiss (Not A Single
Doubt), who finished second in the Vo Rogue
Plate (Gr 3, 1400m), in the $2 million Magic
Millions 3YO Guineas (RL, 1400m), while she
has been booked to ride The Odyssey (Better
Than Ready) in the $1 million Magic Millions
Snippets (1200m) and Testashadow (Testa
Rossa) in the $1 million Magic Millions Cup
(RL, 1400m), a race he won in 2017. “Queen Of
Wizardry looks pretty smart, she surprised a few
of us,” Thornton told Racing.com. “Annabel said
to me before the race that she might be looking
for a bit further but she’d be hitting the line
strongly and she definitely did that. The way she
won it, knowing it was only her first start and
there’s going to be some natural improvement,
it’s pretty exciting going into the Millions. And
Gotta Kiss was very gallant; unfortunately it was
one of those situations where she experienced
bad luck through nobody else’s fault. She still
had a nice run throughout but she’s very much
a momentum horse and being on the fence was
exactly where we didn’t want to be. I thought
she did a brilliant job to run second, four weeks
between runs up to the 1400 metres, and we
know that she’s also going to take improvement
out of yesterday. She’s been set for the Millions
and we know she runs out a strong 1400 metres.”

pair bound for other targets. All roads lead to
the Golden Slipper Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) for
Captivant, who has only recently returned to
work and will be given a Sydney preparation. As
for Astrologer, who already has a stakes-placing
to his name after finishing third in the Breeders’
Plate (Gr 3, 1000m), he is in the spelling
paddock after a fair fourth in the B J McLachlan
Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m). The Snowdens will still be
represented in the Classic by Mura Mura (Not A
Single Doubt), who remains a maiden after four
outings but is comfortably assured of a start.
She is raced by American operation Stonestreet
Stables, who had another maiden - Stellar
Pauline (Not A Single Doubt) - finish second to
Away Game (Snitzel) last year.
Gleneagles joins PayneMagic Millions Wyong 2YO Classic runner-up
Gleneagles (Capitalist) will miss the main event
at the Gold Coast and will change stables after
finishing fifth to Queen Of Wizardry on Saturday.
The Aramco Racing-owned Gleneagles - not to
be confused with his namesake, the four-time
Group 1 winner and Coolmore stallion - was
prepared by Trent Busuttin and Natalie Young
for his first two starts. However, he will now be
based at David Payne’s Rosehill stables and will
aim towards some of the bigger Sydney features.
Aramco Racing, one of Singapore’s biggest
operations, is increasing its Australian portfolio
with two-time Singapore Group 1 winner
Aramaayo (Poet’s Voice) - who was a Group 3
winner and Group 1-placed in Australia when
racing as Aramayo for Godolphin - set to join
Chris Waller in the coming weeks.
Portland Sky to spellAnother horse set to miss Magic Millions day
is Red Anchor Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner
Portland Sky (Deep Field) after he finished
a 14-length last in the Vo Rogue Plate on
Saturday. Trainer Matt Laurie told SEN Track’s
Andrew Bensley that the horse had jarred up
on the good track, although he didn’t totally
blame the surface for the poor effort, and that
the preparation would be aborted.
Barade heads for TasmaniaSaturday’s winner of the Magic Millions Shoot
Out Quality (2206m), Barade (Havana Gold),
will forego his wildcard position in the Magic
Millions Subzero (2400m) on January 16 and
instead head for Tasmania to contest the
Hobart Cup (Gr 3, 2400m) and the Launceston
Cup (Gr 3, 2400m). Barade, who began his
career in Scandinavia, scored his second win in
three starts under a well-timed Jim Byrne ride
at the weekend as he led home an OTI Racing
quinella, with Grey Lion (Galileo) in second.
Mercy bound for Oakleigh PlateImproving sprinter Sword Of Mercy (Sebring)
will test her Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m)
credentials when she next lines up in
the Kensington Stakes (Listed, 1000m) at
Flemington on January 16. Trained by Mathew
Ellerton and Simon Zahra, Sword Of Mercy took
12 starts to break her maiden, but she made
it four wins from seven outings since when
recording the second metropolitan success
of her preparation in Saturday’s Benchmark
84 handicap over 1100 metres at Caulfield. “I
thought it was a pretty good win,” Zahra told
RSN on Sunday morning. “She was a little bit
further back than we thought she might be and
I love the way she just pinned the ears back
and ran through the line. Six months ago, she
probably would have been beaten - she was
doing a bit wrong and not really knowing how
to hit the line. She went into Flemington (first-
up) a little bit underdone and we were a little
bit worried, but (her win) just shows you her
class. She might be our best sprinter come the
next couple of months.” Looking ahead, Zahra
added: “I think she’s an ideal Oakleigh Plate
horse. If we can get her rating up and win next
start then she’s just knocking on the door of the
Oakleigh Plate. She goes well at Caulfield, she’d
get in well at the weights, they generally go
pretty quick and if she can hit the line like she
did yesterday then it looks a nice target for her.”
$382 purchase gives Lawrence greatest satisfactionThe victory of Little Red Fox (Honalee) in a
Burrumbeet maiden on New Year’s Day might
have seemed innocuous at the time, but the
six-year-old’s success was an emotional one for
several reasons. Not only did the win mark the
first career victory for fledgling trainer Emma
Collins, but it was also the most satisfying
success in the career of apprentice Mikaela
Lawrence, who carried her family’s brand
new pink and white colours into the winner’s
enclosure for the first time. In addition, Little
Red Fox - who Lawrence rode to finish sixth of
six in her second outing at Clare in April 2019 -
was purchased by the Lawrence family for just
$382 having been spotted in a mixed auction at
the Echuca Horse Sale last year. Initially bought
to be given a home, Little Red Fox was returned
to training having thrived in the paddock and
she scored a heartwarming first win when
coming home by the narrowest of margins on
Friday. “We still haven’t come down from cloud
nine,” Lawrence told RSN. “It’s just a maiden at
Burrumbeet but for us, given where the horse
came from, it was amazing."
Maskiell shakes demons to ride 500 winnersJason Maskiell rode his 500th winner at Sale
yesterday when he partnered the Mario
Farrugia-trained Plymouth Road (Tavistock)
to a surprise victory in the Benchmark 64
handicap over 1740 metres. The landmark
was a significant one for Maskiell, who made
an immediate impact in his first full season
riding in Victoria in 2009-2010, being crowned
champion apprentice and sharing joint-
second with Glen Boss in the Melbourne
premiership. However, in a turbulent three-
year period, Maskiell was twice suspended
for testing positive for the drug ice (crystal
methamphetamine) and he subsequently quit
race-riding for almost three years. He returned
to the saddle in Tasmania in 2017 and has
enjoyed success from his Gippsland base since
moving back to Victoria. The 30-year-old later
made it a double on the card by securing his
501st success on Creative Lad (Denman).

threatening, racially vilifying and insulting
comments towards track rider Darshan

before Laming was charged under AR228(e).
In assessing the penalty, stewards took into
account Laming’s guilty plea, his record
and noted the serious nature of the offence.
Meanwhile, Laming continues to await his
penalty having pleaded guilty to the charge
of presenting Iam Ekstraordinary (Ekraar) to
race with an elevated cobalt level at Ballarat
in May 2018. The trainer is also set to defend
two separate charges laid by stewards in
February relating to the alleged race-day
stomach tubing of Jamaican Rain (Manhattan
Rain) on Melbourne Cup Day in 2019.
NEW ZEALAND
Melody Belle on track for Trentham featureJamie Richards had plenty of firepower in
racing action on the track at Ellerslie on New
Year’s Day, but also took the time to stretch
the legs of some of his team members being
set for upcoming major assignments. Dual
Horse of the Year Melody Belle (Commands),
exciting three-year-old Need I Say More (No
Nay Never) and New Zealand Derby (Gr 1,
2400m) prospect Supreme Khan (Mongolian
Khan) each had a day out in preparation for
their respective goals over the next few weeks.
Not seen in New Zealand since her win in the
Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) in October,
having finished third in the Mackinnon
Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in November, Melody
Belle worked home nicely over 1000 metres,
which she covered in 59 seconds, clocking
her last 600 metres in 34 seconds. “She was
on the bridle, quickened, and seemed very
happy to be out there,” rider Opie Bosson said.
“She was flying back to the birdcage too.” The
winner of seventeen of her 35 starts and NZ$4
million in prize-money, Melody Belle will
head to Trentham on January 30 to contest
the Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) where she
will attempt to equal the record of mighty
mare Sunline (Desert Sun) with 13 Group 1
wins. “She’s scheduled to trial on January 12
at Matamata, ahead of the Thorndon Mile,”
Richards said.
Richards three-year-olds bound for Karaka Million nightNeed I Say More and Supreme Khan also hit out
well, covering 1000 metres in 61 seconds, with
both stretching out nicely to finish on terms.
The winner of four of his six starts, including
three at stakes level, Need I Say More is likely to
trial at Matamata before heading to the Almanzor
Trophy (Gr 3, 1200m) on Karaka Million night at
Ellerslie. “He’s a very fit horse, but still a bit light
through the middle and next season will be his
go,” Richards said. “He’ll have two or three runs
and that could include the weight-for-age Group
1 over 1400 metres at Te Rapa on February 13.
Supreme Khan has improved since his spring
campaign in the South Island, developing into
a nice horse, and he’ll go to the three-year-old
over 1400 metres next Saturday at Awapuni.
Depending how he goes, we could look to the
Karaka Million 3YO Classic at Ellerslie with him.”
Il Affare to continue on Oaks pathCo-trainer Dawn Williams was in a
philosophical mood when assessing the
performance of promising three-year-old Il
Affare (Dundeel), who overcame a troubled
passage to finish third in the Royal Stakes (Gr 2,
2000m) at Ellerslie on New Year’s Day. The filly
got well back in the early stages of the race and
was then held up at a vital stage in the run home
before flashing home out wide to claim her
minor placing. While she holds a nomination
for the Levin Classic (Gr 1, 1600m) at Trentham
in a fortnight as well as the New Zealand Derby
in early March, Williams reiterated the New
Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m) on March 21 is Il
Affare’s main target. “It was probably the draw
that cost her at Ellerslie as she had to get back
and then be ridden for luck,” Williams said.
“The winner (Needle And Thread) dominated
from in front so that made it hard for the rest of
them. She is a pretty relaxed filly and seemed
to handle the 2000 metres okay which is a good
sign. The Oaks is her main target so what we do
in the meantime is the question. We’d like to
freshen her up a little and then put a programme
together to get there (to the Oaks). The constant
racing takes a toll on them, so you’ve got to be
patient and look after them along the way.”
Dream filly makes successful debut at Te ArohaTrainer Ken Rae knew he had just the sort of filly
he likes dealing with when he picked her up on
the float on the way home from a trip away. The
Super Easy (Darci Brahma) weanling had been
purchased by Rae for owner Sue Martin off the
gavelhouse.com site and needed to be collected
from Mark and Denny Baker’s Hallmark Stud.
Rae was bringing home experienced performers
Kaharau (Ad Valorem) and Blanco Bay (Cape
Blanco) and was taken with how the filly handled
herself throughout the process. “Sue had asked
me to bid for her on gavelhouse and I think we
got her for $1,500,” Rae said. “I was bringing home
Kaharau and Blanco Bay one day and stopped
off at Hallmark to collect her. She walked straight
on the float without a care in the world which
had me thinking she was my type of horse, easy
to handle.” Race took his time with the filly, now
named Dream Queen, and gave her two trials
before electing to start her over 1000 metres at Te
Aroha yesterday. Under the guidance of Jasmine
Fawcett, Dream Queen scored by more than a
length in impressive fashion. “She showed us at
her recent trial that she had some ability as she
ran second to a smart one of Richard Collett’s,” he
said. “The third horse that day came out and won
first up at Awapuni, so I knew we had one that
could gallop. The way she won today was great,
so I’ll need to have a think about what to do next.
I don’t have anything planned, but if she came
out and won again, then a race like the Matamata
Breeders’ Stakes might well be a target for her.”

TOSEN STARDOM - SON OF WORLD CHAMPION DEEP IMPACT| 10 |
2020, while he will stand at Coolmore’s Ashford
base in Kentucky at USD$100,000 (approx.
AUD$130,000) in 2021. With his first northern
hemisphere-bred crop having just turned three,
American Pharoah’s stakes winners are topped
by top-tier victors Harvey's Lil Goil and Van
Gogh, the latter having been crowned Cartier
champion two-year-old colt following his four-
length success in the Criterium International
(Gr 1, 1600m) at Saint-Cloud. American
Pharoah has 22 lots catalogued for the upcoming
Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale.
84 for Into MischiefFresh off securing a second straight title as
North America’s leading sire, Spendthrift Farm’s
Into Mischief (Harlan’s Holiday) recorded his
84th individual stakes winner when Life Is
Good (3 c ex Beach Walk by Distorted Humor)
took out the Sham Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) at Santa
Anita on Saturday. Won by trainer Bob Baffert
with eventual Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) and
Breeders’ Cup Classic (Gr 1, 10f) hero Authentic
(Into Mischief) last year, Life Is Good also
comes from the Baffert barn and entered the
Sham Stakes having won a maiden at Del Mar in
November. Sent out the shortest of short-priced
favourites, Life Is Good was hardly asked for an
effort by Mike Smith as he led from pillar to post;
even with stablemate Medina Spirit (Protonico)
bearing down fast, it was still a comfortable
three-quarter length margin at the finish, with
a further 13 lengths to Parnelli (Quality Road)
in third. Life Is Good is the first stakes winner
from two foals to race out of Distorted Humor
(Forty Niner) mare Beach Walk and comes from
the same family as Australian Group 3 winner
Spectroscope (Medaglia d’Oro). Into Mischief
will stand at Spendthrift Farm for US$225,000
(approx. AUD$292,500) in 2021.
US: Anothertwistafate completes surface trifectaAnothertwistafate (5 h Scat Daddy -
Imprecation by First Defence) entered the
San Gabriel Stakes (Gr 2, 9f ) at Santa Anita
with a Graded victory on dirt and a synthetic
stakes win on his resume and he completed
the trifecta by adding a turf score to his
record in Saturday’s feature. With previous
trainer Blaine Wright, the dark bay won the
Longacres Mile Handicap (Gr 3, 1m) - his
first start in 16 months - on dirt at Emerald
Downs in Washington, while he also took
the 2019 El Camino Real Derby (Listed, 9f )
on synthetic at Golden Gate Fields. Now
with Peter Miller in southern California
and fitted with blinkers for the first time,
Anothertwistafate was an emphatic winner
of the San Gabriel Stakes, scoring by two and
a half lengths under Joel Rosario; Bob And
Jackie (Twirling Candy) and 2019 victor Next
Shares (Archarcharch) filled the minors. His
next run is likely to come on the other side
of the United States with Anothertwistafate
bound for Florida. "We'll look at the Pegasus,
both the turf and the dirt," he said. "The dirt
is more money but, obviously, there's tougher
horses in there."

BY TOM PEACOCK | RACING POST
When you try to breed at "the
pointy end of the market"
like Bob Scarborough, there
are only so many chances a
broodmare can have to produce something of
note before she starts to resemble a particularly
expensive pet.
It had been heading that way with Cabaret
(Galileo), the mare the Australian had selected
at some cost from Coolmore. Then Magna
Grecia (Invincible Spirit) came along.
"I’d nearly given up," Scarborough admits.
"The first foal by Danehill Dancer [Prance] was
a cracking good sort and was bought by the
Niarchos family but I believe she split a pastern
as a two-year-old. I think she was possibly a filly
who may well have had racing ability but when
she came back she was mediocre. Then she had
three more foals who did very little.
"I entered her in the broodmare sale the
year before last, then Magna Grecia came out
and won the old Racing Post Trophy [Vertem
Futurity] and of course as soon as he did that I
changed my mind.
"A couple of months before, I’d thought, 'There’s
some chance I’ll get a little bit of money for this
mare, she’s not actually a dud, I’d better stick
her in the sale while I can get something back'."
How Cabaret has compensated
Scarborough for her reprieve. Magna Grecia
went on to give him one of the thrills of his
lifetime in breeding by taking the 2,000 Guineas
(Gr 1, 1m) before his half-brother St Mark’s
Basilica (Siyouni) – sold for a considerably
upgraded 1,300,000 gns (approx. AUD$2.43
million) – took championship honours in
October’s Dewhurst Stakes (Gr 1, 7f).
"I’m a bit fortunate to still have her, to
tell the truth," he says. "If Magna Grecia had
strained something or other and didn’t run at
Doncaster, the mare would be gone. Then he’d
have come out and won the Guineas. But these
things happen."
It had been difficult for Victoria-based
Scarborough to quite gauge St Mark’s Basilica’s
position in Aidan O’Brien’s juvenile pecking
order, aside from the odd snippet from his Irish
sources that the colt had been coming along
nicely enough.
St Mark’s Basilica had looked a work in
progress on the track, winning a maiden and
showing promise in two Group 1s before his
piece de resistance under Frankie Dettori at
Newmarket.
"He was a lovely foal and a lovely yearling
and to see him develop as he did through
the season, I thought was terrific," says
Scarborough. "Clearly the Dewhurst was the
icing on the cake.
"When he started off, I think he was basically
waiting for them to jump [from the stalls], and
when they jumped, he did. He put himself at
a terrible disadvantage in those earlier races
but as things progressed he became more
confident. Although he was a fair way back in
the Dewhurst, he was a bit more aggressive and
finished the race off wonderfully well.
"He looks terribly promising, I’m so thrilled
he’s clearly among the horses that would be
expected to perform well in the 2,000 Guineas
this year."
In comparing the two horses, he says:
"Magna Grecia was a slightly more mature
horse than St Mark’s Basilica as a foal and as a
yearling, but in terms of their ability and their
desire to win and so on, I think that they’re very
similar horses.
"Magna Grecia was possibly more
masculine as a young horse, but as St Mark’s
Basilica matures it may be he’s a similar type."
While many look towards Australasia for
more reliable racing returns, Scarborough
strides in the opposite direction.
He sold Wood Nook Farm in Nagambie,
producer of Group 1 scorers such as Victoria
Derby (Gr 1, 2500m) winner Hit The Roof
(Maroof) and Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,
1200m) victor Sleek Chassis (Flying Spur), a
few years ago and directed his focus towards a
small broodmare band at Harry McCalmont’s
Norelands Stud in Kilkenny.

Scarborough: ‘I’d nearly given up; I’m a bit fortunate to still have her’
Magna Grecia RACING PHOTOS

Scarborough’s international interest was
sparked when he found himself underbidder
to Sheikh Mohammed for a yearling on his first
visit to America in the early 1980s, but it was a
few more years before he put it into practice.
"I don’t think I really returned to the
northern hemisphere until the ‘90s, when
I bought a mare in partnership with John
Magnier. She was in foal at the time and the
resulting progeny was [Prix Maurice de Gheest
winner] King Charlemagne," he recalls.
"At the time I was heavily involved with 20,
25 mares and getting going here, particularly
in the breeding industry, but I’ve always had
that interest in the northern hemisphere,
particularly the European pedigrees and their
influence on the breeding industry in Australia.
"I’m now terribly involved with six mares
that I own outright and one I own 50-50 with
Coolmore. I’d dearly like to have a few more,
about ten or 12, but it’s getting more and more
difficult to get the black-type racemares off the
track, or the proven mares.
"I love it, I believe they’ve been so much
the source of the modern thoroughbred, it has
effectively evolved from Europe."
The moustached and jovial Scarborough
is an easily recognisable figure in Australian
racing. A successful businessman and former
chairman of a booming Moonee Valley Racing
Club, he even used to compete on Darien
Powers, the event horse who won Olympic
golds for Andrew Hoy in Atlanta and Sydney.
Growing up with parents who were
"Presbyterian and had no interest in racing
or horses or betting or whatever else", he
still somehow found himself obsessed by
thoroughbred pedigrees aged 12 and the
passion has not waned over 60 years.
"I would spend 20 hours a week in the
off-season contemplating where these six
mares of mine would go," he says. "By the
time the end of the year comes, there are
all those first-season sires who have had a
wonderful year, you wonder if you should
go somewhere else.
"I’m forever changing my mind and by the
time you get to a few weeks ago, you pick the
stallion, then some of the owners turn around
and say they’re fully booked and you can’t
come. It’s a year-long adventure for me."
As he clicked with Magna Grecia,
Scarborough has returned to the Invincible
Spirit (Green Desert) line by using his son
Kingman for Cabaret, and she is expecting a
foal by the Juddmonte stallion and is to visit
him again in 2021.
He is also still the somewhat reluctant
owner of St Mark’s Basilica’s Siyouni (Pivotal)
yearling brother, who failed to find a buyer at
Tattersalls and is in the early stages of education
for a career with Jessica Harrington.
He says: "It wasn’t the plan. I was planning
on getting more than a million guineas for this
yearling and to my chagrin I’m now a proud
owner of yet another racehorse!
"I’m in fear and trepidation because you
have these expectations of some financial
reward for your breeding activities and all of
a sudden you’re in the hands of the gods in
needing some racetrack performance. But
anyway, we’ll see what happens. It’s all part of
the dream for us breeders."
More Classic dreamingScarborough has kept the odd offspring
to race for himself and his filly Bonte Moi (Le
Havre) made one appearance in his silks this
year for Jessica Harrington.
Far more has been achieved with her
stablemate Oodnadatta (Australia), who was third
in the Moyglare Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 7f) and ninth in
the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf (Gr 1, 1m).
"She’s out of Bewitched, who is the mare
that John Magnier and I share 50-50," he says.
"We’re hoping she might be a Guineas
filly, [though] maybe she might be one for a
little bit later in the year. She’s by Australia, so
you wouldn’t really expect her to have been as
precocious as she was in her two-year-old year.
"She went to the Breeders' Cup and had
no luck; she missed the start, hit the running
rail and got tailed off before flying home in the
straight. So that was a bit of an experience for
her, but she’s got over that and I’m hoping that
the Classic races might be on her agenda."
Bewitched (Dansili) is another of the mares
who has required some patience.
Scarborough adds: "She was a very good
race filly, a Dansili who won multiple Group 3s
and Listed races.
"Initially she was a little bit disappointing,
but not so with the last couple of foals; there’s
a Group 3 winner [Pablo Escobarr] and the
three-year-old [Roberto Escobarr] won last
year. They were stayers and this one’s a bit more
precocious. She’s got a tick from me finally."

St Mark's Basillica RACING POST

BY MICHAEL LEE | SPG TURF CLUB
Freshly-minted Singapore champion
trainer Michael Clements picked
up where he left off in 2020
when newcomer Mortal Engine
(Unencumbered) provided him with a first
winner of the new year at the season opener
yesterday.
Having saddled a treble at the last meeting
in 2020 to conclude a wonderful season on
61 winners, the Zimbabwean-born handler
showed he had no intentions of letting up on
his winning momentum at only the second
race yesterday, the $75,000 Prosperity Stakes, a
Restricted Maiden race over 1200 metres.
A former unplaced runner at his only start
in Australia, Mortal Engine took up the running
from his handy barrier in two before handing
up the lead to Bad Boy Black (Gingerbread
Man) to take a drop in third place, nicely tucked
away on the rails.
Turning for home, jockey Louis-Philippe
Beuzelin duly angled Mortal Engine out for his
run, mastering Bad Boy Black rather easily, but
had to contend with Ironprince (Smart Missile),
who had peeled off his back to issue a stinging
challenge inside the last furlong.
But the finishing line came in time for
the $14 favourite who hung in by a head from
Ironprince with Kwoi Hoi (Danerich) third,
another two and three-quarter lengths away.
The winning time was 1.10.97.
Clements said he had been confident of
a forward showing from the new Tivic Stable
newcomer at his maiden outing, but the heavy
showers the whole country has come under in
recent days had dampened his enthusiasm a little.
“He was pretty disappointing at his only run
in Australia and it was run on a heavy track. He
ran terribly,” said Clements.
“What he’s shown us here in his gallops and
trials had been very good and were indications
he’d go well first-up, but there were some
concerns over the rain-affected track.
“He handled it very well, though. He
showed us a lot of speed in his gallops and I
told Louis to try and get the box-seat from the
barrier.
“I think he will improve off that run as
he still had a bit of condition on him. He had
every reason to compound in the last bit, but he
produced a good effort to win.”
Beuzelin was delighted he had got off to an
auspicious start to the first meeting of the year,
which traditionally is held on New Year’s Day
as the New Year Cup meeting, but the Polytrack
feature race has been replaced by a Kranji
Stakes, a race run over the same 1200-metre
distance.
“This horse showed me some promise in
the morning, and he showed a bit of it today,”
said the French jockey.
“I think he needed the run, and I think
he will be better over 1400 metres. It’s an
excellent start to the new year, Happy New Year
everybody!”
Maia lands treble during season opener
After being widely tipped, even by his 2020
conqueror Vlad Duric, as the jockey who would
make this 2021 season his own, Ruan Maia took
a step in the right direction with a treble on the
opening day of the season yesterday.
The Brazilian flew off the blocks in the first
race with Per Incrown (Per Incanto), before
doubling the dose with Super Invincible (I Am
Invincible) in race seven and completing the
big haul with Surpass Natural in the highlight
of the day, the SD$100,000 Happy New Year
Stakes.
As humble as ever, Maia would not read too
much into the flying start, more so when arch-
rival Duric was out of action at the inaugural
race meeting and at the next meeting on
January 9, currently serving a two-day careless
riding suspension.
“It’s a great start, but this is only the first
meeting. There is still a long way to go,” said

the two-time Macau champion jockey who
narrowly missed out on the Singapore title by
only three winners to Duric at his very first full
season last year.
“Well done to Jerome (Tan, winning trainer
of two of his treble, Per Incrown and Surpass
Natural) too, as he’s also the leader today!”
Tan just laughed off the compliment as he
knows the cream would eventually rise to the
top, but the Singaporean handler, who helms
a medium-size yard with just under 30 horses,
was glad he has made an auspicious start to the
new year, especially with two horses who just
landed at his stables.
“Both Per Incrown and Surpass Natural
came to my stables around one month ago, and
credit must go to their previous trainer, Leticia
Drgaon,” said Tan, who has also received Group
winner Exceed Natural (Red Giant), Strong N
Powerful (Golden Archer) and Sky Eye (Per
Incanto) (also victorious at his first outing
under his care) from the same connections.
“She has kept both horses to the mark and
has done most of the hard work. They were well
and fit, and I’m just lucky to get the results.
“Surpass Natural is a good Polytrack horse
and that was the race I had targeted for him.
He’s been trialling very well.
“I’m not sure what’s next for him. We have
less racing now and we can’t really plan ahead,
we’ll just see what happens.”
Travelling in fourth position not far off
leader Excelling (Manhattan Rain), Surpass
Natural loomed as a major threat upon
straightening without having spent a penny, no
doubt helped in a big way by the passage left
wide open when Altair (Zoustar) rolled out and
carried Webster (Showcasing) off the track at
the point of the turn.
One could easily picture Maia chuckling
to himself at the inviting saloon passage, and
knowing his above-average strike rate on
Polytrack, the rest became child’s play. The five-
year-old slid his way to the front, holding sway
all the way to the line for a most authoritative
performance as the $13 favourite.
Pennywise (Pure Prize) atoned from his
last-start flop in the Colonial Chief Stakes
(Listed, 1600m) a fortnight ago with a searching
run back on the fence inside the last 300 metres
but could only come within half a length of the
winner.
Sacred Rebel (Sepoy) also powered home
late to finish third another head away, but did
lug in close home, slightly checking the fast
finishing last-start winner You Rokk (Artie
Schiller) who ran fifth, a head away from last
year’s New Year Cup (Listed, 1200m) winner
Nowyousee (O’Reilly).
The winning time was a smart 1.09.89 for the
1200 metres on the Polytrack, only 0.15 seconds
slower than the record established by the great
Rocket Man (Viscount) in the Woodlands
Handicap (Listed, 1200m) ten years ago.
With that seventh win from 13 starts,
Surpass Natural has now amassed in excess of
SD$300,000 in stakes money for the Sky Eye
Stable.
“He’s a very good horse. I think a horse
(Pennywise) nearly passed him at one stage,
but he fought back,” said Maia.
