Town Hall ToursMondays at 11.30am and 2.30pm:24 September, 29 October,26 November, 17 December

Leeds Town Hall is truly one of the finest examples of Victorian civic architecture in Europe and one of the most attractive Town Halls in the world – an iconic structure of which we can all be proud. You may know the outline of the tower from a thousand photos, or have seen the opulent interior of the Victoria Hall, but there is another, hidden, secret side to the building. This tour is your chance to stand at the dock where prisoners once stood to hear their sentence, or sit at the judge’s bench of the Borough Court, to descend the stone steps into the dank and dark prison cells below, but also to climb the 203 steps to the top of the clock tower to see the clock itself, and a view of Leeds unlike any other. Please note: access to the Town Hall clock tower is by stairs only. We will endeavour to include the Victoria Hall in these tours, however as the Town Hall is a working building, this may not always be possible.

Kerem Sezen Choir Master/Conductor

Arguably the oldest touring boy band in the world, the Vienna Boys’ Choir was founded in the fifteenth century as part of the Chapel of Holy Roman Emperor Maximilian I.

Maximilian, who travelled a lot, liked to have his musicians about, and the boys have been on the road ever since the choir’s beginnings. Since 1924, when they were re-established as Vienna Boys‘ Choir, the boys have sung in more than 100 countries on close to 1000 tours. They have visited the UK 50 times; their first trip to Britain took place in 1934. After a ten-year absence, they are finally touring the UK again. For their return to the UK, the Vienna Boys’ Choir has devised a very Viennese programme, with music from composers closely linked to the choir’s history, works by contemporary composers, and with its own arrangements of music by the Strauss family. Nothing reflects the Viennese mind and spirit quite like polkas and waltzes by Strauss; a dancing, whirling mix of melancholy, mawkishness, longing, and fun, with some black humour thrown in for good measure. The choir will also present songs by Billy Joel; Joel’s father moved to Vienna in the 1960s, and Billy Joel chose to write a song about Vienna, as a metaphor for the rest of one’s life: Vienna waits for you.

Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a themeby Thomas TallisRachmaninov Rhapsody on a themeof PaganiniShostakovich Symphony No 7 (Leningrad)

The orchestral season opens with Vaughan Wiliams’s haunting and breathtakingly beautiful tribute to Thomas Tallis, known as the ‘father of English music’. His fabulous Fantasia links the music of the reigns of the two Elizabeths and was commissioned for the Three Choirs Festival in Gloucester. At the premiere it was described by one critic as “a queer, mad work by an odd fellow from Chelsea”. The piece has featured in a number of films including Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World (2003) and Troy (2004).Shostakovich completed his longest symphony in 1941 during the fiercely-fought siege of Leningrad in World War II. The world premiere took place during the siege but Shostakovich commented “I have nothing against calling the seventh the Leningrad… but it’s not about Leningrad under siege, it’s about the Leningrad that Stalin destroyed and Hitler finished off”.

Manchester CamerataHolst wrote his St Paul’s Suite for St Paul’s Girls’ School where he was Director of Music from 1905 to 1934. Whilst there he composed many works in a soundproof room that was especially built for him. The piece was originally written just for strings but Holst added wind parts so that more students could perform. Listen out for the final movement that uses the well-known Greensleeves tune. The Italian word ‘Sospiri’ means ‘Sighs’ and Elgar’s short piece was composed just before the First World War and premiered in London. It was dedicated to his close friend, Billy Reed, who was leader of the London Symphony Orchestra. Haydn’s Symphony No 92 was commissioned by the French Count d’Ogny and premiered in Paris in 1789. However, it was nicknamed the ‘Oxford’ symphony as he conducted the work at Oxford University after he received an honorary doctorate in 1791.

Dvořák Cello ConcertoBeethoven Symphony No 3 (Eroica)

Having vowed that the cello was not strong enough to be a solo instrument, Dvořák surprised everyone when he eventually came round to the idea of writing a cello concerto, and it was the last solo concerto he wrote.Beethoven’s ‘Heroic’ Symphony was a massively significant work both for the composer and for classical music. Completed in 1805, it marked the beginnings of early Romanticism, being much more expressive and, as a result, substantially longer than the typical Classical symphony. Listen out for the vast emotional range of the second movement, from funeral march to joyous melody, and for the hunting calls of the three horns in the third movement. Excerpts from Eroica were used in the soundtrack to the 2011 film The Green Hornet and Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho.

Smetana Overture: The Bartered BrideTchaikovsky Piano Concerto No 1Janáček AdagioDvořák Symphony No 8

The first of Tchaikovsky’s three piano concertos, written around 1875, features a well-known theme at the beginning which is based on a melody that he heard being performed by blind beggars at a market near Kiev. This is one of Tchaikovsky’s most popular and recognised works.Dvořák’s Symphony No 8 was written in just ten weeks and illustrates the extent to which he was influenced by folk music as a composer. Look out for the piccolo which plays only once in the whole work, during the first movement. In the second movement listen out for the clarinet duet, enjoy the waltz of the third movement and in the fourth, the trumpet fanfare.

‘Confident yet unaggressive, shining, colourful, structured without being rigid, the work of Igor Tchetuev makes every piece’s vital force emerge.’ Le Monde

Bruch wrote three violin concertos in total but his first is the most respected and well-known. Dedicated to the violinist Joseph Joachim, this composition is viewed as a major work in the standard violin repertoire and is something of a showpiece for violinists. Bruch’s masterpiece is followed by Rachmaninov’s two favourite compositions of his own. The Bells is a setting of the words of Konstantin Balmont’s loose translation into Russian of the poem of the same name by Edgar Allan Poe. Rachmaninov was looking for inspiration for a new choral piece when he received the text in an anonymous letter. Composed in 1913, the choral symphony’s four movements – Sleigh Bells, Wedding Bells, Alarm Bells, and Funeral Bells – are said to reflect the four key stages of life. Listen out for the traditional Gregorian melody, Dies Irae, which appears throughout the piece.

Sibelius FinlandiaGlass Violin Concerto No 1Kodály Suite: Háry JánosSibelius Symphony No 5

Please note change of date from previously advertised

Finlandia was written by Sibelius in 1899 to accompany a series of tableaux depicting events from Finnish history. Whilst the exhibition was disguised as a charity event, it was clearly a protest against the Russian government’s increasing censorship. As such, the piece had to be frequently renamed to disguise its performances. People were even banned from whistling the tune in the street! The piece ends with the Finlandia Hymn,an important national song in Finland.Glass’ Violin Concerto, composed in 1987 for his friend Paul Zukofsky, is notable for the lack of electronic instruments which are key to many of his other works. Glass worked closely with the violinist on the concerto, writing specific sections as he requested, such as the slow, high finale.

‘Sibelius is so concentrated and exact. With Sibelius you feel that if one drop touches your skin it would burn right through the bone.’ Simon Rattle

This festive concert contains a selection of Italian works all inspired by Christmas. Corelli’s Christmas Concerto was composed for Christmas Eve and the score bears the words ‘Made for the Night of Christmas’. Listen out for the drone effect which symbolises the playing of bagpipes and reed pipes at Christmas. Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons is the most recorded piece of classical music, with over 150 versions, but of course the most well-known recording was by Nigel Kennedy and the English Chamber Orchestra in 1989 which sold over two million copies. The set of four violin concertos takes its form from four sonnets and it is thought that Vivalidi may have written the sonnets himself. In keeping with our Christmas theme, Autumn and Winter are performed this evening.

Band on the Wall and CODA present a very special concert by one of the most loved electric folk bands reunited with long time collaborator, friend and folk giant June Tabor.Twenty-one years ago June Tabor andOysterband made a landmark album of dark folk together called Freedom and Rain – a union Rolling Stone called “a marriage made in heaven”.“If you can’t appreciate June Tabor, you should just stop listening to music”, said Elvis Costello.June plus Oysterband’s potent energy and top-flight musicianship made for something out of the ordinary, and they toured the UK and America with great success. Following this, friendships continued while careers diverged.

Celebrate Christmas at Leeds Town Hall’s annual family carol concerts. After the concert there will be a collection for the Lord Mayor’s Charity Appeal. This year the Lord Mayor is supporting the work of Crohn’s and Colitis UK in its efforts to raise £15,000 for the purchase of two capsule endoscopy systems, one at the Leeds General Infirmary and one at St James’s Hospital. This will provide tangible benefits for people in the area who have Inflammatory Bowel Disease (IBD) and will be accessible for both adult and child patients. www.leedsphil.org

However, a reunion to play a short set at fRoots Magazine’s 30th birthday party at the Roundhouse in 2010 sparked the chemistry again. Soon they were back in the studio, and with a new albumful of gorgeous tunes and brooding intensity called Ragged Kingdom, plus revisited and refreshed songs from 1991, June Tabor and Oysterband launched one of the most anticipated collaborations of recent years. And so it proved – at this year’s BBC Folk Awards Oysterband swept the board receiving four awards including Best Group, Best Album and Folk Singer of the Year. Advance booking strongly recommended for what promises to be one of the most magical concerts of the year.
