Comix Creatrix: 100 Women Making ComicsMain Galleries5 February – 15 May 2016

The UK’s largest ever exhibition of the work of leading female comics artists. Original artwork by 100 women writer/illustrators working across genres from the 1800s to the present day. Featuring artists from Marie Duval and Tove Jansson to Posy Simmonds, Audrey Niffenegger and Nina Bunjevac. Co-curated by Olivia Ahmad and Paul Gravett.

David Lemm: Mapping King’s Cross28 January – 6 March 2016

Our 2015 Illustrator in Residence David Lemm exhibits his exploration of the evolving urban landscape of King’s Cross. Our residency programme is supported by the Barbara and Philip Denny Charitable Trust.

Shojo Manga: The World ofJapanese Girls’ Comics South Gallery18 March – 12 June 2016

The first major exhibition of Japanese Shōjo manga on tour in the UK. Featuring ‘Genga’ (Dash) prints of the pioneering work of 1970s manga artists Akiko Hatsu and Keiko Takemiya, and contemporary artist Yukiko Kai. In association with the Kyoto International Manga Museum and The Lakes International Comic Art Festival.

Children’s Books from Soviet RussiaMain Galleries27 May – 11 September 2016

With the perfect synthesis of typography, design and illustration, Soviet children’s publishing in the 1920s and 1930s revolutionised the picture book form against a turbulent political backdrop. This exhibition explores this period of unprecedented innovation with a selection of original artwork and rare books from the collection of Sasha Lurye.

Seven Kinds of Magic29 April – 24 August 2016

The Quentin Blake Gallery at the House of Illustration opens in April 2016. It will offer a continuous series of exhibitions of different aspects of Quentin Blake’s work, drawing on the unparalleled diversity of his personal archive of thousands of original illustrations, roughs and preparatory drawings.

The inaugural exhibition, Seven Kinds of Magic, explores Blake’s varied depictions of magic both in his own books and from those of other writers such as Russell Hoban, John Yeoman and Roald Dahl.

The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots2 September 2016 – 5 February 2017 An exhibition of Quentin Blake’s original illustrations for The Tale of Kitty-in-Boots, the recently re-discovered unpublished Beatrix Potter manuscript, to be published on 1 September by Penguin Random House.

The book about ‘a well-behaved prime black Kitty cat, who leads rather a double life’, features classic Potter characters including Mrs Tiggy-Winkle and Mr Tod re-drawn by Blake.
