Introduction1

Whats New Vault 2017

1. Robust Security

2. Flexible Licensing

3. Usability

4. Administration

Here are the 4 key points that we will be covering for what's new in Vault 2017

Robust Security - easier to Manage access, Autodesk have made it much easier to Manage access, across company divisions

Flexible Licensing - add new licensesYou can add new licenses as you need

Usability - Copy Design / Insert into CADWe shall cover things like Copy Design new features, Save As and Insert into CAD Administration - easier Installation and enhanced SQL Password SecurityAutodesk have really thought about the administrators here, with easier Installation and enhanced Passwords security

On the whole these are good changes and great new features2

Vault 2017 Security

Security Updates - enhance and simplify Vault file and folder securities. A number of changes have been made to enhance and simplify Vault file and folder securities.

Security PermissionsMerge Role, Object and State Based permission

State ACL overrides object ACL State ACL

READ ONLYNo Permission

Now, Autodesk give us the option to Merge - Role, Object and State based permissions together.

Previously the permissions worked like this,

Lets say you had Dave in the Object security as Read and Modify, then you have Everyone in the State ACL as read- The State ACL would override the object ACL and everyone would only be able to read. (Click)

In 2017, (Click) You can have it combine the ACLs, so that you have to be in the object ACL and the State ACL to be eligible for the permissions. So only Dave would have read access as he is in the Object and State ACL (Click) Anyone not listed in both will not have permission

Anyone wanting to stick to the old security still can. Nothing has been taken away from you, just more security is available if you choose to use it, or have a need for it.

SecurityControl access across divisions or departments

Simplify multiple lifecycle definition requirements

So with the security enhancement in mind this means controlling the access across the divisions or departments has become a lot more flexible

As I may have said before, you now can easily decide which security model to be used within Vault. Those happy with the current security approach can choose to continue as is, while those with growing needs in defining security can select this new method.

Having the choice of which security model to choose this also will help with the transition to these new capabilities.

5

Security SimplifiedClearer Permissions Grid

View Effective Access

Propagate security

In order to simplify Vault configuration, the whole security user interface has been overhauled to include a grid view of user and group access settings.

Also to assist access management, Autodesk have also introduced a new tab to the details dialog for reviewing the effective access rights, providing an immediate and clear summary of selected users effective access rights to the selected object.

Propagating Folder Permissions In addition, administrators can now control how folder state security settings should propagate to the contained files, inheriting the folder access permissions, defining custom access controls or clearing any security overrides based on folder state.

6

Vault 2017 Licensing

As Joe and Michael have mentioned, Licensing in Vault is important to know as everything is leaning towards the subscription model

7

LicensingClient side licensingFlexible purchase modelsClient side license status

Client side licensingAnother enhancement to Vault 2017 is the transition from server side to client based licensing (Single-User Subscription Licencing) which is due to become available in August 1st if not sooner. So for Professional (click) and workgroup (click) you will have the option for single-user Licencing. But please note, Vault office will not be supported by the single-user licence model. (Click)By permitting users to connect and use a license from their client, this can enable access for sole contractors with their own Vault license to work on a project basis with an existing companys Vault.Or allow organizations to better manage Vault license counts based on work cycles with single user subscriptions. Flexible purchase modelsYou now have the Multiple user subscriptionsClient side license statusYou can now view the license type and status in the Vault Explorer as you can see here (Click)

Also if you logged into Vault as two users on one machine, in previous Versions this would eat up 2 licences. Now it is done on a per machine basis and you would only be using one licence if you decided to log in as multiple users on the same machine.

8

Licensing FAQWill the change to client side licensing mean I can no longer run a license server?

No perpetual licenses under maintenance plans, and the new multi-user subscription licenses will leverage a network license component to manage concurrent user license access.

9

Licensing FAQ Do I need to be connected to the internet to use Vault?

No - the multi-user subscription model permits license access without internet access on either the server or client machines.

10

Licensing FAQ Will I be able to increase my existing Vault license count once Autodesk introduces a subscription only model?

Yes additional Vault multi-user subscription licenses can be purchased as per your business requirements and added to your existing license count.

Vault 2017 Usability

The main things here are the Copy design additions12

Copy Design Folder ViewFolder List ViewFind and Replace path

Copy Design Folder Panel By popular demand, Vault Workgroup and Professional 2017 Copy Design allows users access to file paths via the folder list view.

This new folder list view allows users to set destination path by manually updating the destination folder text, or more importantly assign file destination using find and replace text, to update the folder path string.

13

Copy Design Typical Workflow

Copy Design Video

Locate the file / right click, copy designMain grid, Select file & copy the branchI would then go over to the TreeviewNext over to List view to find and replace file/folder pathsThen I would change the prefix and put a postfix instead (numbering tab)

Bingo Bango done then just pop over to vault explorer and check everything looks ok

14

Place into CADInsert from Vault Explorer to active CAD modelAlign with how customers work today

Insert into CAD Additional functionality will also be delivered for Vault 2017 this year via the appstore, with an extension permitting users to insert CAD files from the Vault Explorer window, directly into your Inventor session. This simple productivity enhancement addresses a long standing request, speeding up the placement process by bypassing the place from Vault dialog and better aligning with user workflows.

15

Revision Roll BackSelect multiple files to roll back revision

Faster

More Reliable

File Rollback Update After introducing the revision rollback feature in prior releases, Vault 2017 now allows you to multiselect files for File Lifecycle State Change Rollback, reducing the number of steps required to resolve unintended state and revision changes across a dataset.

16

Vault 2017 Administration

17

Pre-CheckResolve Issues in Pre-check

Administrator can now opt to try and automatically resolve fail conditions found in pre-checkIIS Connection TimeoutASP Status

Repair issues during pre-check In an effort to reduce installation issues and administrator interaction, Vault 2017 introduces a new Auto-Fix feature for the IIS Connection Timeout (click) and the ASP Status pre-check. (click)

If the system finds an issue with either of these pre-checks during installation, the administrator can click Re-Test to have the system attempt to automatically correct the issue.

If you do prefer to do this manually, you are able to leave the install screen to perform the changes, but this simple enhancement for common settings issues can help speed up and simplify initial installation.

18

AdministrationEnhance SQL Security

Vault SQL Account and SMTP Server Passwords are encrypted

Improved Password Security The Vault 2017 release improves password security for critical SQL service accounts.

The enhanced security includes password encrypted and allows administrators to change the default password for SQL Service accounts via the ADMS Console.
