    Magnifying Glass

You can use the magnifying glass tool toinspect and select detailed areas of a modelwithout changing its overall view.

    User Benefits

This tool lets you alternate betweenbig-picture and highly detailed views withoutrepetitive zooming.

Dual Units in the Measure Tool

You can now configure the Measure tool todisplay results in two different units ofmeasure (for example, inches andmillimeters).

    User Benefits

Working in dual units facilitates work ininternational environments. For example, designers from North America can work ininches while those from Europe or Japancan work in metric measurements.

Displaying dual units in the Measure toolcan prevent unit conversion errors.

    Assemblies

    Assembly Bill of Materials

You can now create a bill of materials (BOM)directly in an assembly without first creatinga drawing.

    User Benefits

If you are not ready to create assemblydrawings but need a BOM, creating one fromthe assembly saves time and lets managersproject costs and margins earlier in thedesign process.

    Mates for Simulation

You can now build design intent intoSolidWorks mates to automate Simulationsetup and part-to-part interactions acrossall studies in a model. You can define

contact, shrink-fit, and bonding once, at themate level.

    User Benefits

Capturing the design intent of interactionsthrough mates lets you automate simulationtasks.

Dynamic Length Control of Toolbox Fasteners

SolidWorks now supports dynamic lengthcontrol of fasteners supplied with Toolbox. The user interface is similar to that used inInstant3D.

    User Benefits

Dynamic length control enables adjustmentsto fastener length so that you can be sureto use the correct length for the application.

    Large Assemblies

    SpeedPak

The new SpeedPak technology creates asimplified version of a complex assemblywithout losing references. SpeekPak uses asubset of the parts or faces of an assembly, which reduces opening time, saves memory, and improves the performance of manyoperations.

    User Benefits

The larger and more complex the assembly, the greater the benefit SpeedPak provides.

    Large Assembly Handling

Performance improvements affect windowselection, manipulation of sub-assemblies,adding and editing mates, and working withdrawings. You can now create assemblieslarger than one kilometer.

    User Benefits

Refinements can be made more quickly tolarge assemblies and their correspondingdrawings.

    Clearance Verification

You can now use clearance verification tocheck the spacing between components inan assembly and report clearances that failto meet minimum values. This capabilitycomplements Interference Detection.

    User Benefits

Checking clearances is particularly usefulfor producers of electronic packaging andenergy conversion devices and designers inindustries driven by agency approvals.

Checking clearances between components, for example, between electronic controls, helps ensure proper performance.

Strain energy density calculations helpdesign engineers understand what portionsof their design are most active in a dynamicsituation. By reviewing these plots, designers can make better choices aboutimprovements in vibratory environments.

    Remote Mass in Linear Dynamics

For linear dynamic studies, designers nowhave the option to treat solid bodies asremote masses. Bodies treated as remotemasses are excluded from meshing, buttheir mass properties and moments ofinertia are considered in frequency anddynamic analyses.

    User Benefits

The application of remote mass reduces themesh size and expedites the solutionprocess, particularly for large assemblies indynamic loading environments.

Symmetric and Multi-part Bolts in Nonlinear Studies

You can now define bolts on holes split bya symmetry plane or through more thantwo parts in a nonlinear study.

    User Benefits

Design engineers will get faster results ontheir models by eliminating atime-consuming step.

Multi-part and symmetric bolts can bedefined in both static and nonlinear studies.

    SolidWorks Flow Simulation

    Multi-processor Support

Flow solutions are iterative and can take afew hours to complete. Multi-core andmulti-processor support enable FlowSimulation to run 1.3 to 1.5 times fasterthan in previous releases.

    User Benefits

Multi-processor and multi-core supportspeeds meshing and solver activity.

    Radiation and Non-Newtonian Models

You can now include bodies transparent tosolar radiation. You can also test data onnon-Newtonian fluids.

    User Benefits

You can simulate greenhouse effects byincluding bodies transparent to solarradiation.

    Improved Usability

The Flow Simulation user interface is nowsimilar to the SolidWorks user interface. Youcan now edit callouts for loads andvisualizing boundary conditions. You canalso probe section plots to get feedback.

    User Benefits

Flow Simulation is easier to use.

Users can probe section plots and get datato plot in a spreadsheet.

    4SolidWorks Enterprise PDM

This chapter includes the following topics:

    Bill of Materials

    Security

    Bill of Materials

SolidWorks Drawing and Assembly Bill of Materials

Bill of materials (BOM) tables created inSolidWorks drawing and assembly files arenow displayed in Enterprise PDM. The BOMsare shown with the names assigned to themin the SolidWorks FeatureManager designtree.

    User Benefits

You can now check out, edit, and check inSolidWorks BOMs in Enterprise PDM.

An assembly BOM in SolidWorks can nowbe displayed and edited in SolidWorksEnterprise PDM.

    37/38

    Named BOMs

When you create a named BOM, the BOMis associated with its source - either acomputed BOM or a SolidWorks drawing orassembly BOM. You can update the namedBOM when you check in a new version ofthe source.

The BOM tab in the File Explorer view showsthe Update Source Version, which allowsassociative Named BOMs.

    User Benefits

The display and editing of bills of materialsin Enterprise PDM expands from a simplestructure-based BOM to user-createdDrawing and Assembly BOMs.

    Restructure BOMs and Apply Filters

You can now add rows, columns, andposition numbers to named BOMs. You canrearrange and sort columns, and filter itemsbased on the variables displayed in thetable.

    User Benefits

You can find and display information inBOMs more easily.

The Filter dialog box accessed from theBOM tab of the File Explorer lets you set upfilters to apply to BOMs.

    Cut Lists and Weldment BOMs

You can now display a cut list or a weldmentBOM for a weldment part if these BOM typesare configured for display by theadministrator.

    Customer Benefits

Users now have additional BOM viewing

    options within SolidWorks Enterprise PDM.

The Bill of Materials List dialog box in theEnterprise PDM Admin Tool lets you setparameters for the display of weldment cutlists.

    Security

Enhanced Security - Warnings Can Block Operations

If there are warnings for one or more files,

users' ability to check in files can be limited. An administrator can select specificwarnings to block check-ins or otheroperations.

    User Benefits

Warnings give administrators tighter controlover the approval process and ensure higherquality data and fewer manufacturingerrors. For example, the use of warningscan ensure that a drawing reflect the latestchanges to a part.

The Warnings tab of a user's Propertiesdialog box provides new block operationoptions.
