Technological advances, health care reform, and greater workplace diversity have all transformed the career of Nursing. Virtually everything about nursing has morphed dramatically over the past few decades, except for one constant: the powerful healing relationship between

nurses, their patients, and their families.

C e l e b r A T I n g Nur s ing

Today’s nurses manage more complex illnesses, data, and technologies than ever before. On top of providing direct patient care, today’s nurses are increasingly becoming true health care leaders, creating effective and efficient changes in all kinds of environments — hospitals, the insurance industry, and even government.

National Nurses Week 2014, held May 6–12, was a time for all of us at PAH to recognize an honor our co-workers who serve on the front lines of patient care.

A Recognition Breakfast for all Nursing and Physician staff, given by Mary Del Guidice MSN, BS, RN, CENP, chief nursing officer, and Daniel Feinberg, MD, chief medical officer, officially kicked off 2014 Nurses Week celebrations on May 5

Be sure to mark your calendar for the next PAH Town Hall meeting on Tuesday, June 17, in the Zubrow Auditorium. As always, there will be two sessions to accommodate day and night shifts: 12 p.m. and 10 p.m. The entire PAH leadership team values your thoughts and opinions about what affects all of us every day at the hospital. Don’t miss this opportunity to communicate directly leadership members!

Bruce gave a featured, CEU presentation at both PAH and the Tuttleman Center during National Nurses Week, titled, “Q_UALITY — What is missing…YOU!” He has over a dozen years experience in nursing as both a staff nurse and a nurse leader. He lectures actively about health care management topics, is currently adjunct faculty in Departments of Nursing and Business Administration at Holy Family University, and is a frequent contributor to Nursing Management Journal and has contributed to the Journal of Emergency Nursing, Critical Care Nursing Quarterly, and Nursing Forum.

A Family Legacy of Nursing A very special guest attended the Relationship-Based Care Awards ceremony at PAH this year — Elizabeth Ewart. The spunky 95 year-old graduated from the PAH School of Nursing in 1940 as Elizabeth Johnson. You can see her along with the rest of her graduating class that year, in the photo hanging in the hallway adjacent to Outpatient Admissions.

Elizabeth worked at the 0old PAH Institute until 1943. After that she went to work for a physician in a private practice before moving into pediatrics for seven years. She then took a 15-year hiatus from nursing to raise three children — a son, a daughter and her youngest daughter Barbara Hendrickson, who continues her mother’s nursing legacy at PAH today as a coordinator in the Operating Room.

Elizabeth rejoined the nursing workforce in the 1960s as a staff member of the outpatient clinics at PAH that used to be located where the Cathcart Building is today. She continued to work as a nurse for nearly another 30 years at PAH, first in Obstetrics and then in Urology for the last eight years of her career.

Elizabeth brought the house down with her terrific sense of humor, cracking up the awards ceremony crowd with stories and reflections of her experiences as a nurse early on in her career.

` Shown here is bruce boxer, Phd, MbA, MSn, rn, CPHQ, director of Nursing education at PAH, signing a textbook he co-authored with his sister, ellen boxer goldfarb, MSn, CrnP, a Cardiology nurse practitioner at Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. All proceeds from sales of their textbook were donated to Mercy Hospice, a transitional housing facility near PAH for women recovering from drug and alcohol addictions and their children. PAH nurses and health educators give monthly workshops at Mercy Hospice to teach residents about nutrition, high blood pressure, cancer, depression, anxiety, women’s health issues, and other conditions that may have been ignored for years due to the challenges of addiction and homelessness.

Provider, Educator, Author — a New Normal in Nursing

A new mandatory HIPAA privacy training has been released to update all Penn Medicine employees on privacy and security rules under HIPAA. The training module can be completed online through Knowledge Link. The interactive format addresses current, high-risk issues regarding patient privacy. The e-learning course, which takes about 20 minutes to complete, replaces prior versions of HIPAA training in order to ensure all members of the Penn Medicine workforce are up to date regarding privacy and security safeguards. In today’s digital age, risks to privacy and security are becoming more common, and it is of utmost importance that Penn Medicine ensures patient privacy.

New software will also be in use to proactively monitor access to electronic patient information to help detect inappropriate access to records. Consequences for violations can include all forms of discipline, up to and including termination. The software will strengthen the HIPAA compliance program and increase patient security and privacy. All of our patients, including employees who often are patients, deserve to have their privacy protected. Information about the software is included as part of the new training course. Being informed is the first step to prevent violations of HIPAA, so it is important to complete the online course not only for your patients, but also for yourself.

All employees must complete the online module by June 30, 2014, through Knowledge link. HIPAA education must be completed once every two years going forward in order to remain up to date on potential risks to data. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact PAH Privacy Officer, Amy brazina at. [email protected] or the Penn Medicine Privacy Office at [email protected]. For a list of all entity Privacy Officers, including CPuP and CCA, please visit here: http://uphsxnet.uphs.upenn.edu/hipaa/contact.html

The team also qualified for the highly-coveted Finish Line Tent and won five awards: the Circle of Distinction — awarded at the fall 2013 MS Society National Convention in Denver for teams surpassing the $1 million mark; Largest Corporate Team; Top Fund Raising Team; $100,000 Club; and Millennium Circle Team.
