EXPERIENCE A COUNTRY ON THE BRINK OF HISTORIC TRANSFORMATION

For a country that has influenced American culture in such a profound way, it is ironic that so few Americans alive today have visited Cuba. Yet, Cuba stakes its place in our consciousness like nowhere else. With a huge cast of characters, a peculiar national pride, natural beauty and a wealth of talent in music and art, Cuba calls to us and the allure is undeniable.

Drawing on years of research and expertise in Cuba, International Expeditions has created a compelling small-group program designed to allow you an insider’s view of this once-forbidden country.

DEAR TEXAS EX:

Brush aside the Cuba that you “know” from history books and current events, and there is an unfiltered view of this vibrant island found only through the eyes of its people. While traversing the countryside and sipping coffee in small cafés, guests on this extraordinary adventure encounter working-class locals eager to share and ensure lives and opinions are transformed. Through meaningful daily interactions, you learn from Cubans as they learn about our lives. Our journey offers free-ranging discussions and local interactions touching on all aspects of Cuban life and culture, so that you return home with a genuine understanding of this fascinating destination.

Join fellow Texas Exes as we venture out of bustling Havana for a rare glimpse at Cuba’s lush countryside. Against a backdrop of dramatic limestone mogotes, tobacco-dotted valleys and wetlands that hug an historic coast, you join local naturalists and birding enthusiasts to seek out endemic wildlife. Along the way, we connect to the warm, generous people who inhabit Cuba’s fertile valleys.

As you explore this enigmatic island with the Flying Longhorns, you will be immersed in the daily lives of Cuban people including musicians, artists and families while discovering Cuba’s top three natural history locales. We hope you will join us.

Sincerely,

Leslie Cedar, BS ’89 MBA ’98 Executive Director

Day 4 TOPES DE COLLANTES / TRINIDAD Enjoy a morning in the mountains at Topes de Collantes National Park in the Sierra de Escambria Mountains. Learn from guides Luis or Janet about efforts to protect the region and the history of coffee production. Watch for Cuban tody and Cuban trogon, the national bird of Cuba. Visit a modern art museum. (B,L,D)

Day 5 ZAPATA PENINSULA / BAY OF PIGS The Zapata Wetlands, an UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, encompasses a national park protecting Cuba’s most important wetland.Join a local farmer to search for the bee hummingbird. Discuss the importance of the wetlands with a local environmentalist. Overnight at Hotel Playa Larga or similar. (B,L,D)

Days 6 & 7 SOROA & VIÑALES At the Korimakao Project, meet some of Cuba’s finest musicians and artists. En route to the Viñales Valley, pay homage to Ernest Hemingway by discussing his work with Cuban Hemingway specialists at his former home, Finca Vigia. Meet families working the land while visiting an organic farm and a local tobacco farmer. One day, lunch is in a privately owned paladar, where we learn about the challenges and opportunities facing Cuba’s new entrepreneurs. Spend two nights at Villa Soroa or similar. (B,L,D Daily)

Day 8 SOROA & VIÑALES / HAVANA Survey an orchid garden with staff from the University of Pinar del Rio. Meet local naturalists, business owners and farmers in the “green” community of Las Terrazas. Stop at Café de Maria for a cup of locally grown coffee and chat with the family who runs the business. Continue to Havana, and spend two nights at the Parque Central or similar. (B,L,D)

Day 9 HAVANA Tour Old Havana, seeing classic cars and fading Spanish colonial architecture. Stroll through the atmospheric plazas, calling on artists in their studios, chatting with the musicians lining the squares and even stopping at Hotel Ambos Mundos, Hemingway’s Havana base while writing For Whom the Bell Tolls. Stop at Arte Corte, a social project like no other. Arte Corte began training locals to become hairdressers and barbers, but transformed into a community regeneration program, supporting a senior home and children’s park. Interact with the locals as we explore an art market. Cap off our time in Havana with an excursion to hear the famed Buena Vista Social Club. (B,L,D)

Day 10 HAVANA / MIAMI Transfer to the airport for our charter flight to Miami. (B)
