EstherYaloz’stextileprintsareatoncebeauti-fullyprintedandlovinglycraftedintoenchant-ing textiles, reflecting the natural beauty ofwildflowers. Upon viewing Esther’s display,herkeeneyefordetailandhersurehandatcapturingtheessenceofthevariousplantsinherdrawingsareapparent.
Estherisenchantedbythevitalityofwildflow-ers.Theyoftenstruggletosurviveininclementweatherandneglectedspaces,yetreturnyearafteryear.Thisresilience,andthefactthattheyareoften ignored,drewher touse themasacentralmotif inherprints.Herflowerpatternsare sometimes jumbled as in nature, some-timesarranged,andsometimesfashionedintoenchantingshapesofbirdsorhearts.
While growing up in a farming village innorthern Israel, Esther loved to walk in thesurrounding fields among the wildflowers,
collecting samples along the way. Later, asa young design student majoring in textiledesign,thesewildflowersbecametheinspira-tionformanyofhertextileprints.
Estherwentontoworkforalargetextilecom-panywhichsourcedoutallof itsproduction.Longing to print her own pieces, she took aleap of faith, and with her husband, Ofir, anindustrialdesigner,shemovedtohermother’schildhood home in Elmira, NY. There theystartedPlanetariumDesign,withOfirbuildingthestudioanddisplayfurniture.
Their business is ecologically oriented. Thedyesarewater-based,andEstherprintsallherdesignson100%naturalfabrics,eithercottonorsilk.Agreatdealof importance isplacedon the uniqueness of each and every item.Esther prints, dyes, and sews everything byhand.Forher,transformingrawmaterialsintoauniquefinalproductisamagicalprocess.

Esther enjoys making functional art. Among herpieces you can find dish towels, hip tank tops,bags of all sorts—from makeup to elegant eve-ning clutches, cotton and silk scarves, pillows,andwallhangings.
Shortlyaftermovingtothearea,theystartedex-hibiting her work at various art festivals as wellasattheIthacaFarmer’sMarket.There,shewasapproachedby friendly localartists fromHand-work, who encouraged her to apply for mem-bership at the store. This was Esther and Ofir’sfirst welcome to the community, and they havebeen thankful ever since. In Handwork, Estherhas found a warm and inviting group of artistsandmakerssharingandexchangingideas,tools
andknowledge.Sheisproudtobepart
of Handwork as the store celebrates its
39th year. Esther appreciates the per-
sonalaspectofworkinginthestoreand
selling her designs locally and meeting
thecustomers.Shelovestheideaofsmall
scaleproduction,whichplacesvalueon
eachindividualpiece.
Esther has received first prize at several
of the festivals she’s attended, and hassomeofherworksdisplayedingalleries.

Local PoliticsThe CortlandChamber of Com-merce has a verylong history. Wehave records dat-ing back to 1897that show ourbusiness leadersweremeetingwithpoliticians to dis-cuss organizing in
ordertopromotelocalbusinesses.Meetingswere held in restaurants, taverns, or someotherplaceofbusiness.Sincethattime,localleadershavecomeandgone,butmaintain-ing constructive relationships with politicalleaders has always been an important partofChamberwork.
Recently,CongressmanRichardHannawasinCortlandandwehadthechancetositwith
himandhisstafftodiscusslocalbusiness,ouraging infrastructure,andwhatcanbedonetoeasetheburdensonourcommunitiesandbusinesses.WedothesamewhenStateSen-atorJamesSeward is in town.Theybothat-tendChambereventsandsincerely listen tousandourmembers.
Maintaining these relationships at the locallevelisjustasimportant,andmaybemoreso.Since2015isanelectionyearforourlocalelectedofficials,weurgeallofourresidentsto inform themselves about local issues, thecandidatesrunningforoffice,andtheirposi-tionson the issues—and thengovote! In theCityofCortland,we’llhavethemayoralracealong with all of the common council seats.CortlandCountywillhaveallofour legisla-tiveseatsupforelectionthisyear.Therewillbearace forSheriffaswell.You’llalsoseemanyraceswithineachofourtowns.
It’sadifficultjobrunningmunicipalitieswhilebalancing the tax levy,statemandates,andproviding local services. By informing your-selvesandvoting,you’llbehavingyoursayin the direction our local governments take.We look forward to the elections and toworkingwiththosewhoarechosentorepre-sentus.

TheCayugaChamberOrchestraishonoredtobe officially nicknamed “Ithaca’s Orchestra,”butthey’reevenmoregratefultohavefansandsupportersfromthroughoutourregion.
Notonlydoes theCCOpresentvibrantandengaging orchestra concerts, but they alsohaveanannualChamberMusicseriesfullofincredible music ranging from beloved com-posers like Mozart, Schumann, and Brahms,tolivingcomposersrightinourownbackyard.
For hundreds and hundreds of second grad-ers though, the CCO is known as the groupthatbringsthefunofclassicalmusicrightintotheirclassroomseachspring.SincetheCCOwas founded in 1976, they’ve made it theirgoal to serve our region by presenting high-qualityconcertsforallages.They’vefeatured

In November, the Homer MethodistChurch, The Homer CongregationalChurch,andotherindividualsworkedtoraisefundsfortheHomerMethodistFoodPantrythroughtheLunchBucketCampaigntoFightHunger.
The Lunch Bucket Campaign to FightHungerplacedindividuallunchbuck-etsonthecheckoutcountersofstoresand businesses in Homer. Customerscouldplacedonationsinaslotineachlunchbucket.Thelunchbucketswerelabeledwiththewords“Fillthebuckettofillpeople’sstomachs.”
TheLunchBucketCampaigntoFightHungerwasdevelopedtodrawattentiontotheneedsofhungrypeopleinourarea,andthefactthatevenpeoplewithjobsmayneedadditionalhelpfromfoodpantriesto feed their families. The vintage lunch bucket designs served as areminderofasimplertimewhenpeoplebroughttheirlunchestoworkorschoolintinorhardplasticcontainers.
Toprepareforthelaunchofthecampaign,boththeHomerCongre-gationalChurchandtheHomerMethodistChurchaskedtheirmem-bersiftheyhadlunchbucketstheycoulddonate.Therewereseveraldonations, but because tin and hard plastic lunch boxes or bucketswerehard tofindcampaignorganizerssearchedgaragesales,fleamarketsandantiqueshopsinNewYorkandinPennsylvania.Someofthelunchbucketsfoundwererustyandneededtobesandeddownandrepainted.Lunchbucketsneededtobecleaned,andmoneyslotswerecutintheboxes.Aftermonthsofpreparation,enoughlunchbox-eswerecollectedtostartthecampaign.
TheHomerMethodistFoodPantryhasbeenserving thecommunityfor well over 25 years, according to pantry manager Tiny Hughes.Besides the Methodist Church, other local groups who contributefoodandfundstothefoodpantryincludetheHomerCongregationalChurch,theHomerSeniorCenter,P&CFresh,theUnitedWay,Mari-ettaCorporation,andstudentsfromtheHomerJr.-Sr.HighSchool.
Donated food and hygiene supplies directly help individuals andfamilies.Fundsraisedprovidepeopleinneedwiththeopportunitytopurchaseamorebalanceddiet,aswellasadditionalfoodtosupple-menttheirmeals.IdeallytherewillbeextrafoodavailableforspecialmealsatThanksgiving,Christmasandotherholidays.

DIRECTIONS: 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. Mix graham cracker crumbs, 2 tablespoons sugar and the butter. Press in bottom of 9 inch springform pan. Bake 10 minutes and let cool. 2. Heat oven to 300 degrees. Beat cream cheese in large mixer bowl. Add 1 cup sugar gradually, beating until fluffy. Add vanilla. Beat in 1 egg at a time. Pour over crumb mixture. 3. Bake until center is firm, about one hour or less. Cool to room tempera-ture. Refrigerate 1 to 3 hours. Loosen edge of cheesecake with knife before removing side of pan. Top with sour cream or fruit pie filling.
