Dear Friends,

I've received many calls from residents since the storm that hitMississauga and the GTA on July 8th. In the days following the

storm I toured Ward 5 and visited residents whose basements

had been flooded. It was heartbreaking to witness the

devastation and the number of residents who lost so much.

The storm dumped over126mm of rain on the GTA, which is

more than the 121mm we received during Hurricane Hazel in

1954. This was an unprecedented event and a "100 year"

storm. The City of Mississauga and the Region of Peel are

currently studying the storm and the damaged that resulted. It

is likely that there will be a report to City and Regional Council

in the Fall.

In the meantime, there are things that you can do. First and

Basement Flooding in Ward 5Many Ward 5 residents were affected by the heavy rain storm that hit the GTA on July

8th. My thoughts are with those who experienced basement flooding and I will do what

I can to help you rebuild.

The storm was unprecedented, dropping more than 126mm of rain in only a few

hours. This was more than the 121mm of rain that fell during Hurricane Hazel in 1954.

In many parts of the GTA, including Eastern Mississauga, the storm was classified as

a "100 year" event. This means that there is only a 1 per cent chance of a storm like

this occurring each year. It was truly an extraordinary event and judging by thepictures that were sent to me by residents, and the amount of damage I witnessed

first hand, it affected a large number of Ward 5 residents. Here is a map of the

rainfall that occurred during the storm.

In the days immediately following the flooding, I visited many residents in the ward to

survey the damage and provide them with information. I have also been working to

keep residents as updated as possible about the flooding and providing

them with helpful information. On July 16th, I hosted a meeting at City Hall for allresidents in Ward 5 to come and receive more information, talk with City and Region

staff, and ask questions about the flooding.

The City of Mississauga has a helpful pamphlet on basement flooding

and next steps

Tell us your flooding story

If you were flooded, it is critically important that you let the City and the Region know

about it. To find the source of the flooding, the Region and the City need to be able to

map where the flooding occurred. If you were flooded, please call 311. I know that it

has been difficult at times to get through to 311, but please understand that they are

experiencing a higher than normal call volume.

Waste Pick-Up Amnesty

Until further notice, the Region's two-bag collection limit is waived for residents with

flood-related waste items. The Region is making every effort to collect these items on

regular collection days. Any areas affected by waste collection delays will be

collected the following day.

Have your say on the future look of Malton

The Malton BIA is well underway with a brand development project to create a uniqueand targeted brand for Malton. The new brand will form their public image and help

revitalize and beautify the Malton business district and community.

Over 300+ Malton businesses and residents were invited to attend brand

development focus group sessions held at the Malton Community Centre in July.

Focus group session results revealed a strong sense of pride for the heritage of

Malton, specifically for the innovation of the Avro Arrow, and as a new landing point

for immigrants.

Easy access to all borders, both locally and globally, as well as great shopping,

services, parks and recreational facilities are also key features of the Malton area.

Focus Group members who participated in the sessions included Malton residents,

small business owners, and members of the Board of Directors for the Malton BIA.

City Legalizes Basement Apartments

On July 3rd, City Council approved a plan to

legalize second units in Mississauga. Ontario

laws now require municipalities to allowsecond units in homes. These units are also

known as basement apartments, in-law suites

and secondary suites.

To have a legalized basement apartment,

residents will have to pay a fee and meet all

building code requirements. This fee will be

higher for those owners who do not live in the

house, thereby creating an incentive for those renting a basement apartment to

actually live in the home.

The City of Mississauga was required by provincial law to legalize second units. Over

the past 2 years, the City has engaged in a number of public consultations with

residents to find a 'made in Mississauga' solution. Legalizing secondary units will

provide more affordable housing for low income residents, as well as an additional

source of revenue for existing homeowners. There will no doubt be some issues with

the implementation of second units, but I am confident that City staff have done an

excellent job of finding rules that will work well in Mississauga. To read the full

The design of the park will be finalized in the fall of 2013 and if funding is approved,construction is planned for the summer of 2014.

Proposed Malton Crematorium - UpdateOn June 26th I hosted a meeting for local residents on the proposed crematorium in

Malton. At this meeting we discussed the upcoming Ontario Municipal Board (OMB)

hearing on the Benisasia application for a crematorium and the role that local

residents can play. Many residents stepped forward to say they wanted to be a

participant in the hearing and have their voice heard. Under the OMB's rules of

procedure and practice, they have this right.

On July 5th, the OMB held its

first pre-hearing on the matter.

This meeting determined who

would be involved and the date

for the actual hearing. I was

pleased to see that 11 residents

came forward to stand as

"participants" in this hearing,

including the Concerned

Citizens of Malton andMiranet. The hearing will not

likely take place until late 2013

or early 2014, but I am confident

that we will make a strong case

and ensure that local residents are protected.

I was pleased to join staff at theMalton Community Centre toopen the new Snoezelen Pool.

This pool will be the first of itskind in Mississauga and willmake the Malton CommunityCentre a leader in this city inaquatic therapies for adults and

children with disabilities.

The idea to bring Snoezelen(pronounced: snooze - a - lin) tothe Malton Community CentrePool was that of KarenMacDonald, the Centre's Recreation Programmer. It is being funded by a generousgrant from the Community Foundation of Mississauga's Pendle Fund.

Snoezelen is a therapy widely used in education and care settings for children withdisabilities and autism spectrum disorders, people suffering from mental illness,those in chronic pain, people with acquired brain injuries and those with dementia.The pool will provide opportunities for relaxation in a quiet, yet stimulatingenvironment by using a strategic combination of lighting, music, tactile sensationsand aromatherapy, along with the therapeutic benefits of water. It is an excellentresource to improve the quality of life for people with disabilities and other limiting

conditions.

Regular Snoezelenprogramming began on July 20,2013. Training for Malton

Aquatic staff will be provided bythe Holland BloorviewRehabilitation Hospital. Alreadythere is a great deal of interestin the Snoezelen program.

Since being elected as the Ward 5 City Councillor in September 2011, I have tried

my best to be as open as accessible as possible. To date, I have hosted 13 public

meetings for residents and plan on hosting many more in the coming months. In fact, I

plan to host at least one public meeting per month in Ward 5, starting in September.

I'm calling this series, 'Conversations with Crombie.'

I will book the time and the place; you choose the topic(s) of discussion!

To make these meetings worthwhile I

think it is important that you have a

voice in what is discussed. As such, I

am asking you for your feedback on

discuss and what issues you would

like more information about. For

instance, I have hosted public meetings

on community safety, by-law and

enforcement concerns, public transit

and the Hurontario LRT, and Second Units. I would be happy to host meetings on
