SECTRETARY MANAGER’S REPORT: Hi Members,

I hope the school holidays have been an enjoyable one and you’ve all had the chance to get out in the

beautiful weather with the kids. Our holiday disco party, held on the 29th September, was popular and

all who attended had a wonderful time dancing, singing and playing games.

This month we have the pleasure of hosting the ‘Kissteria’ Australian Kiss Tribute show on Saturday

4th October, commencing at 8:30pm. On Saturday 22nd November the Elton John Tribute Show is

performing here, be sure to expect many classic Elton hits from throughout his amazing career,

spanning over 40 years!! Entry for members to both these events is just $10 and tickets are still on

sale at Reception, bookings can also be made over the phone on 02 9580 3749

To ensure everyone has a great time on the weekends, we have now extended our trading hours to

1am every Friday and Saturday night. Our top priority is to provide a safe environment for our

members and guests and for that reason we have also added car park security on these nights.

Please note: The Club will cease trading at 5pm on Monday November 24th as we will be celebrating

our annual staff Christmas party. We apologise for the inconvenience this may cause.

Regards,

Chris Hendley

PENSHURST RSL TRAVEL CLUB Approximately once a month, we run a day tour and this may be held during the week, a preferable time for many venues which discourage coach groups at the weekend. How-ever, for the benefit of our working members, there are the occasional Saturday trips. On Saturday 13 September, a trip to Mt Kembla Heritage Centre had been arranged. Morning tea was held at the lovely Sublime Point at Bulli Tops which offers breathtaking views up and down the coast. At Mt Kembla Village, we met our guide Elizabeth Roberts

SUB CLUB NEWS...

who invited us to walk along the Mt Kembla Mine Memo-rial Pathway to the intention-ally austere memorial. On 31 July 1902, in Australia’s worst mining disaster, 96 men and boys lost their lives due to a gas explosion. The memorial was opened in 2009 and is maintained by local residents. Our next stop was the Sol-diers & Miners’ Memorial Church and cemetery. The church (erected in 1932) is a typical example of an Austra-lian country church, with plain lines and simple gothic style windows. The walls are beautiful orange NZ Kauri pine and red cedar panelling, which, on a sunny day, glow with colour. Unfortunately, by this time, a fine misty rain had settled in! Here Russell Viles gave a most informative talk be-fore we were split into two groups – half going with Elizabeth to the Heritage Centre to see the award-winning interpretive display “Thunder in a Cloudless Sky”, while the re-mainder of us wandered through the cemetery with Russell. Back on the coach, we continued along Cordeaux Road past the Public School opened in 1859, the former General/Post Office store, site of the Pioneer Kerosene Shale mine monument, the Dendrobium mine site, turning to come back down the hill at Kembla Vil-lage Heights. The timber houses in this old village were built for mine employees origi-nally in 1880 and some were rebuilt in the 1930s. Apparently they are now rented out for around $450pw!! At Unanderra Western Suburbs Leagues Club, we enjoyed an all-you-can-eat buffet lunch and we were back in Penshurst around 4.15 pm. If you are interested in joining us on a day tour or even a longer tour, do think about join-

ing our club at just $6 which covers the period 1 July – 30 June each year. There is further

information on our website: http://pentravelclub.weebly.com/ or you may e-mail us at

[email protected] or phone 9533 5809.
