On the first weekend of March, we had an awesome Speak Up Workshop. We played awesome games, made art, ate pizza, learnt about advocacy and explored how we can use our voice to make a difference. We’re super excited to for this new group of young consultants to help us advocate for a better care system in QLD!

Hello clubCREATE members!

We want to send a massive shout out to all the children and young people who participated in CREATE’s National survey – thank you for helping us to spread the word of young people’s experiences.

In other news, we’ve officially launched the Townsville CREATE office and what a fun event it was…. We even had the Mendi Blackhawks football team come along and kick a ball around.

We also said farewell to Lucas and welcomed Kelly Lotz to the State Coordinator role. Kelly has been with CREATE for nine years and you may have met her along the way. If you have any feedback you want to give or just want to say hi, feel free to send her an email at [email protected]

Laquita has just become one of Townsville’s newest Young Consultants, and loves learning the guitar; which she is self-taught. When she isn’t playing guitar she loves to hang out with her friends.

You recently have completed SUP training 1 &2; what did you think of it?

I thought the program was good because it taught us a lot; such as learning about the care system and the processes and hierarchy involved. I liked hearing that everyone has their own story and I made a few friends as well.

What are your thoughts on CREATE having an office in Townsville?

I think having CREATE close is a good idea and it helps people have a voice more which you don’t get when you are in the care system.

What are some of your favourite things to do in your spare time?

I love hanging with friends at Riverway for a swim on a hot stinky day. I love going to the Strand to go for a walk along the beach, feeling the breeze hit against my skin. I love playing my guitar because it helps me take my mind off things.

What are you hoping on doing with CREATE?

I want younger children to be more aware of CREATE and to know that there are other people out there who understand what they are going through.

What are your hopes for the future?

I want to go to university so I can study Law. I want to study Law because a lot of people don’t understand their rights or get any justice. Also I don’t see too many Indigenous Lawyers around so I want to be one of the few.

Do you have anything to say to young people thinking of being part of CREATE?

I would say that the programs are enjoyable and it helps you make new friends.

to Laquita!Interview with CREATE Young

Consultant - Laquita

Hello Jake is an old school Young Consultant with CREATE, he’s been involved for over five years! Jake was asked the BIG question “What’s been the most amazing thing you’ve seen change in the care system?”

I would have to say that the biggest impact I’ve seen is the Next Step program coming in Queensland. For me that had the biggest impact because it gave me access to a lot of different services that previously I wouldn’t have had. The biggest thing Next Step provided was getting me curtains for new pad. This was a big thing for me because it meant I could have privacy and feel safe in my house.

Jake’s view of the world….

January saw CREATE shuffle to Far North Queensland. Was an epic few days! Our trip kicked off with meeting some super rad young men sharing their views and experiences of the care sector. They were keen as to yarn to create change for all Aboriginal Torres Strait Islander children in care – it was deadly!January 19th saw CREATE put on a super cool fishy Connection Event at Cairns Aquarium. The bubble’s and sparkles of all things under the sea was a burst of visual delights. Then sealed with pizza, hot chips, dips and other super tasty food was shared – over 50 amazing people attended.
