Some have dealt with exclusion from school and severe bullying. They’ll perform words they have cre- ated alongside Benjamin and will describe their experiences, fears and hopes. DaviD Dunn Review Disassembler, Sheffield Jazz THE name suggests some kind of metal band – and occasionally Disassembler doesn’t seem to know what it wants to be. Guitarist/leader Trevor Warren even quips that one composition is at the experimental stage after an early renegade offering. Expres- sions in the audience suggest others concur. There’s clearly immense talent at play in Disassembler’s ranks, including trombonist Annie White- head and sax man Mark Lockheart whose individual routes compete as well as fuel this adventurous jazz brand alongside Warren’s noodling. As the evening progresses some destinations reveal themselves more swiftly than others, but the sonic journey is often interesting if not intriguing - or baffling. With titles such as Vengeance Is For The Weak the metal image prevails but the content regularly random in nature and occasionally awkward rather than clever. Frac- tured is an apt title for one tune in a set that veers from fluid to polaris- ing; not surprising, perhaps, for a band whose influences range from Beefheart to Fela Kuti. Ska-infused Waterfall closes a Millennium Hall show that skirts the outer reaches of jazz but has the genre’s tradition of skill-testing romps at its heart. Next Friday: Kate Williams Septet. ReviewDisassembler, Sheffield JazzTHE name suggests some kindof metal band – and occasionallyDisassembler doesn’t seem to knowwhat it wants to be.

Guitarist/leader Trevor Warreneven quips that one composition isat the experimental stage after anearly renegade offering. Expres-sions in the audience suggestothers concur.

There’s clearly immense talentat play in Disassembler’s ranks, including trombonist Annie White-head and sax man Mark Lockheartwhose individual routes competeas well as fuel this adventurous jazzbrand alongside Warren’s noodling.

As the evening progresses somedestinations reveal themselves

more swiftly than others, but thesonic journey is often interesting ifnot intriguing - or baffling.

With titles such as VengeanceIs For The Weak the metal imageprevails but the content regularlyrandom in nature and occasionallyawkward rather than clever. Frac-tured is an apt title for one tune in aset that veers from fluid to polaris-ing; not surprising, perhaps, for aband whose influences range fromBeefheart to Fela Kuti.

Ska-infused Waterfall closes aMillennium Hall show that skirtsthe outer reaches of jazz but hasthe genre’s tradition of skill-testingromps at its heart. Next Friday: KateWilliams Septet.
