Truth be told I think the 2006 version of The Boxer is better than the 2005 version was. It strikes me as even bolder and more self-indulgent. As big and bold as this wine is it’s possible to enjoy it on it’s own. However Blue Eyed Boy is bigger, bolder and richer than The Boxer with better acidity and balance. They ship mostly to the States and it is by far our most favorite vineyard in the world now! Try to find them if you haven't tried them yet! We called ahead because you have to, to set up a tour, and got in touch with Sparky's (the wine maker) mum, Janet. This kind angel took us and Joe from San Diego on a tour of the plant, but that was only the beginning. The tour was fun and we learned a lot, but lunch and on was the most memorable/non memorable part of the day! Janet took us to her house on the property and started popping bottles of Mollydooker. The Gigglepot Cab to start which we don't actually get in stx, it was awesome! I might have been happy just leaving after that, but not so close. Her husband (and later my snuggle partner) Leigh took us down to their wine cellar for a viewing while Janet picked fresh herbs from her garden for lunch. We had fresh bread, cheese, local olive oil and all sorts of nice things to eat, but the wine definitely dominated the meal! We tried the three best selling shiraz bottles they have, the Boxer, the Blue Eyed Boy (our favorite in stx) and the Carnival of Love, along with their white wine, the Violinist Verdelho, which is one of Sarah's favorites. We didn't just sample these bottles, we drank one of each, no joke, unbelievable. What a lunch! At 3:15 Janet begrudgingly left us to attend a luncheon with an employee who was leaving them, but as she left, she popped a bottle of the Velvet Glove Shiraz (look it up on the net it you don't know its importance, Robert Parker 99 points, $185 a bottle) and told the three of us to enjoy it til she came back and made us dinner. Heaven is definitely missing an angel and I don't think Leigh is gonna give her back. Unfortunately we had a tour at Hardy's at 4 also, but we promised to save some Velvet Glove for her and return for dinner. At Hardy’s they made us wear hard hats. I think I gave mine back, but apparently I shouldn't have because we were only half way thru the Mollydooker portfolio. Leigh and Janet were waiting for us for dinner and Leigh whipped up an amazing spaghetti Bolognese for dinner, which I probably should’ve eaten more of, but really didn't save much room for because of all the wonderful wine! It turns out, they used to have a vineyard and a restaurant thirty years earlier that I’m devastated I wasn't born early enough to try. Actually they tell us there was only thirty seats and a, get this, a TWO YEAR WAIT to get in! That makes Bacchus in the winter sound like the most accessible place on earth. Well, they didn't disappoint us with anything. The conversation (at least the parts I remember) were scintillating and very informative and the wine complimented the whole night like we had always dreamed it would! We even got to try a bottle of Leigh's pinot noir that was awesome, but never released due to their ridiculously high standards (we promised we wouldn't tell anyone about this gem, so this doesn't go beyond this email, o.k.?). After polishing off every bottle in their portfolio, I did some snuggling with Leigh and passed out on the blue couch next to their German Shepherd puppy, Molly, til it was time to go home (at least that’s how Sarah would tell the end of the story). Thank you so much for showing me your new facility and teaching me the Mollydooker way of vineyard management, winemaking, and evaluating wine by mouth feel/fruit weight. It was a true highlight of my trip. It reconfirmed my belief that great wines starts with a focus on the vineyard followed by a clear vision and attention to detail in the winery. I hope our paths cross again as I truly enjoyed your company. I must admit I did not drink the Carnival Love while in AUS as you suggested. Instead I brought it home and shared it with the winemaker, owner and marketing team at the winery at which I work. I wanted to drink it with friends, discuss it, and get their feedback. As you and I talked about, Robert Sinskey Vineyards, where I work, has a different wine making objective than Mollydooker. Our objective is a wine that goes well with and enhances food. We pick sooner, have less extraction, generally higher acidity, and use less new oak. But everyone here appreciates a well made wine and they could not say enough about the quality of this wine, everything from its intense color, its rich fruit, and the integration of high levels of new oak seamlessly into the wine. The highest praise came from our wine maker, a profound Francophile. After savoring the wine for several minutes he asked its price. "$80.00." I said. He immediately came back with "I have spent a lot more for wines that cannot hold a candle to this."
