What would you do if you have to produce oil from multiple zones?

PLAN 1 PLAN 2

- Produce multiple zones simultaneously

- No well intervention needed in the field

- Allow secondary recovery and artificial lift

BASIC CONCEPT

Intelligent Well Technology

Considering our reservoir assignment

• This is a multistaked reservoir with continuous shale barrier in between, making the reservoir very compartmentalized and layer-wise with significant fluid properties and pressure region differences.

• The STOIIP is about 150 MMstb. • The field is situated in a relatively new basin with limited

infrastructure from the nearest fields and the communication is purely on satellite connectivity.

• The oil API region is undersaturated in the region of 25-32 API. • Strong aquifer is supporting the reservoir drive and natural lift for now. • Recovery to-date is still very low at <10% • and the water cut is about 5%. • However, as more new wells is planning and wells with high water-cut

production require additional load-lifting, produced water reinjection and/or artificial lift might need to be in place sooner or later.

Intelligent well candidate• effective in multi-layered reservoirs when the shale zone

separating the sands is continuous and the seal impermeable.• heterogeneous reservoirs with varying permeability and

porosity

ICV/ICD concept• The principle of Inflow Control Device (ICD) is a device…– To make Restriction or Friction to create additional

pressure drop at sandface,– and then balancing wellbore pressure drop – achieve an evenly distributed flow profile– Reduce water breakthrough and gas coning

ICV/ICD Concept

• ICV is an automatic opening-adjustable valve set up to optimize the production rate as desired.

Data screening

• Data Validation uses Range check• Data reconciliation adjusts redundant data by

a linear solver, Thermodynamics and fluid mechanics

• Moreover, with an approach of non-linear equation, data will be filtered and error would be eliminated. This method is called Advanced DVR using measured data, models and process them along with their uncertainty.

Data Transmission and Connection

• Fiber-optic systems have been developed to enable direct conversion of downhole measure into optical signals.

• A distinct advantage with fiber-optic systems is their effective immunity to temperature degradation

• This technique has been successfully completed by satellite communication.

Economic Risks and Safety

• Pay less by using a remotely operated flow control valves with only open and closed positions

• However, safety is the best policy and using intelligent ideas will reduce the number of well intervention and that means we not only save money but also increase safety level.
