Anonymous American Folk Hymn Published in "A General Selection of the Newest and Most Admired Hymns and Spiritual Songs Now in Use" (Stith Mead, ed. Lynchburg, VA, 2nd ed., 1811). Also published in "Hymns and Spiritual Songs Original and Selected" (Stark Dupuy, ed. Frankfort, KY, 1811). Published by 1811 and likely known earlier, the text had multiple variations and verses. The text used here is the composer’s compilation, drawing on the wording most familiar today. The tune was first printed in the 1840 edition of The Southern Harmony, harmonized by James Christopher. An English ballad from the 17th century or earlier was reportedly an antecedent of this tune. Jon Frederickson commissioned this arrangement to premiere in 2016.
