What To Do If Your Garbage Disposal Stops Working

It's frustrating when your garbage disposal suddenly stops working. Sometimes it's

an easy fix by the homeowner, but make sure you never put your hand down the

drain when trying to repair your disposal. You never know when the impellers will

start spinning! Here are some things you can try before calling us:

No Power to the Garbage Disposal

If you don't hear a noise when you turn on your

garbage disposal, then you could have an electrical

problem. First, check that the circuit breaker for your

disposal hasn't tripped. If it hasn't tripped, then try

resetting your garbage disposal. Follow these steps to

reset your disposal:

1. Turn the disposal's power switch to off.

2. Be sure your disposal is plugged securely into the wall outlet.

3. Press the reset switch found on the disposal's front or bottom.

4. Turn the disposal's power switch to on.

5. Retry running the disposal.

Garbage Disposal's Flywheel is Stuck

If you hear a humming noise when you turn on the garbage disposal, then the

flywheel might be stuck. Sometimes food or other objects may clog or jam your

garbage disposal. Follow these steps to unclog your garbage disposal:

1. Locate the hex wrench that came with your garbage disposal.

2. Turn off the power to the disposal via the circuit breaker.

3. Shine a flashlight down the sink drain and see if you can spot the clog.

4. Stick the hex wrench or the handle of a wooden spoon into the drain and try to

loosen any food or objects jamming the impellers. Don't push a bone or other hard

object down the drain. Try to remove it with tongs or another tool.

5. Turn on the power to the disposal and retry running it.

6. If the disposal won't work and you think it's still clogged, turn off the power via the

circuit breaker again.

7. Remove the hoses that connect to the disposal.

8. Insert the hex wrench in the slot made for it - usually on the bottom.

9. Turn the hex wrench which will move the impellers and possibly grind up the

object causing the clog.

10. Turn on the power to the disposal and retry running it.
