– They hope that the government will be better able to provide basic services like

– The ability of Afghan institutions to deal with such humanitarian situations to increase

– An increase in the access people who are vulnerable to essential health services

– Afghan institutions will be able to better manage the border

– Afghan institutions should foster economic growth in the border area

Priority Five: Democratic Development and National Insitutions

• How is Canada Providing Help?– Giving financial and technical aid and the

development of a national voter registry to help with elections

– Cooperating with other donors to help along the election process

– Give backing to certain national institutions and departments in areas like training, equipment, program supports, etc.

– What are two goals that Canada has for this part of the mission by 2011?

– National, provincial and local institutions will show a greater ability for democratic governance when it comes to deliberation

– Also, in the delivery of public programs and services and in carrying out democratic elections there will be more democratic governance

Signature Project 1 – Dahla Dam and Irrigation System

• Why is this an important project for the people of Afghanistan?

• It will provide a water supply they can use for irrigation to most of the Kandahari population

• It will add 10000 seasonal jobs• Agriculture will grow because of the irrigation

• What is Canada doing to help? – Canada is investing money to

• Repair the Dahla Dam (replacing generators and repairing valves to control water flow)

• Train farmers in how to use water wisely and to better produce crops

for the people of Afghanistan?• Education increases people’s chances of going on to

post secondary education, or a helps them get a better job, and therefore leaves them better off than they would have been without it

• To decrease the number of people affected by the disease, as Southern Afghanistan has the highest national incidence of polio
