CREED is a dialysis educational exchange program between Australia and the South East Asia

countries which has the support of both the local and International nephrology groups. The con-

cept originated in 2001 when the International Society of Nephrology (ISN) sub-committee

COMGAN (Commission Global Advancement in Nephrology) approached Australia to support the

development of nephrology in developing countries who have a limited exposure to Renal Science

and modern renal replacement therapies. It started originally with the Australia and New Zealand

Society of Nephrology (ANZSN) and Perhimpunan Nefrology Indonesia (PERNEFRI) to promote

exchange and education in dialysis between Australia and Indonesia.

Today, this program has extended its horizons to reach the rest of the countries in the East Asia

Region in the belief that more countries could benefit from it. This program includes Laos, Viet-

nam, Cambodia, Philippines, Myanmar, Brunei and Indonesia.

Malaysia and Thailand are also part of this program although it is hoped that these countries will

primarily be included as providers of education. This has been of great benefit to the nations with

limited exposure to renal science and dialysis practices.

OUR AIM:OUR AIM:OUR AIM:OUR AIM:

• Promote Cross Regional exchange and transfer

of knowledge and “know how” in dialysis.

• Promote the sound and scientific application of

techniques and technology in dialysis practice.

• Understand the regional limitations (in econom-

ics, skills, access) and maximize available re-

sources to optimize dialysis patient outcomes.

• Fresenius Medical Care will continue to commit

USD $50.000 per year to this program, which will

be administered by the CREED Committee,

chaired by Prof. Peter Kerr.

This committee will meet at least once a year for-

mally to discuss future activities/programs.

In 2012 the CREED committee supported Dr

Meilania Saraswati Sardjana (pathologist), Dr Ni

Made Hustrini (Nephologist) and Ms Purwanin-

grum (a dialysis nurse) to participate in a 3

month educational visit to the ISN sister centre

at Monash Medical Centre in Melbourne Aus-

tralia.

They all participated actively in many of the Re-

nal Unit activities. Dr Saraswati spent most of

her time in the Pathology Department assess-

ing renal biopsies under the mentorship of Dr

Dowling and Dr Simpson. Monash perform

about 500 biopsies per year.

Dr Hustrini and Ms Purwaningrum spent time

on the Nephrology ward and in the various di-

alysis areas (especially Peritoneal Dialysis) hon-

ing their clinical knowledge and skills and par-

ticularly learning to "teach PD". It was a very

successful 3 months, enjoyed by both sides of

the SRC and enriching to both sides.
