EDITOR’S NOTE

“Congratulations! You have won $50,000. Please provide your full personal particulars and bank details…”

Have you participated in a lucky draw recently? Does the company offering the prize sound familiar? When something sounds too good to be true, it is best to proceed cautiously. This issue, we highlight some common scams and share tips on how you can protect yourself.

We explore depression in Health is Wealth. While depression is not age specific, it can be more unnoticeable in older adults. Find out more about the subtle symptoms and recommended resources for further reading if the article sparks your interest.

On a much lighter note, let’s UPcycle! More than recycling, upcycling gives new use and appearance to an old item. Speaking of old, we have a couple of photographs to share with you. Let us know if you are able to identify the places on page 9 and we would love to hear your memories of them. Do write to us and we may even feature your entry in the next issue of the Reading Kit.

We hope you enjoyed the blast to past with the SG50 Reading Kit edition. Till our final issue of the Time of Your Life Reading Kit, here’s to wishing you lots of happiness.

Scams and How to Protect Yourself

There are various kinds of scams that can swindle you of your money and/or steal your identity. Con artists tend to exploit our weaknesses – for example, our compassion for a sick child, or our greed.

Some are done through phone calls or door-to-door visits, whereby an individual pretends to be someone who needs your cooperation. Often he/she claims to be representing a bank, or government agency, or may even pose as a “family friend”. They may provide you with fake credentials or incorporate a few family anecdotes in the conversation to convince you that they are the “real deal”. After gaining your confidence, they may ask you to hand over some money because of certain procedures. Once your trust is gained, the possibilities for exploitation are endless.

You may also receive phone messages notifying that you have won a lottery or a prize. Other scams are done through emails or fake websites. These are called “phishing” or “spoofing”. Con artists may send you an email that appears to be an official email from a bank. It may claim that there are problems with the system and your personal details and password are needed to “verify” your account. The email may also provide a hyperlink that will bring you to a fake bank website where your personal particulars will be stolen once you enter them.

Page 4: What is Upcycling?

How can you protect yourself? It might be troublesome to perform these checks but these pointers will go a long way in preventing yourself from falling prey to a con artist.

• Never fall for anything that sounds too good to be true.

• Never give your personal details like NRIC number, bank account number, etc., over the phone.

• Be cautious if you are asked to make advance payment in order to redeem an item or claim a “cash prize”.

• Do not let others rush you into signing any documents, e.g. insurance policies or sale agreements.

• Ask for the credentials of anyone who claims to be a government official, and check with the relevant department. Call the police when in doubt.

• Shred your ATM receipts or any other documents with your personal details before them throwing away.

• Do not use a password that can be easily associated with you, such as your name or date of birth.

• Whenever possible, use alpha-numeric passwords that include upper and lowercase letters, e.g. “Mar1ne” instead of “marine”.

Old-Age Depression

Depression creeping up in old age could be camouflaged by physical symptoms and misconstrued as an inevitable part of aging. Furthermore, the situation is compounded when older adults are less inclined to opening up and sharing their feelings with others.

Depression is not a normal part of aging; it is a preventable and treatable medical condition. Elderly depression could set in from various causes and manifest in many different ways, which could be easy or complex to recognise. The concern and support from family members, caregivers and friends is key to helping their elderly loved ones cope with old-age depression.

Be alert for signs of depression that can last for weeks, such as feelings of sadness, despair, helplessness, or loss of interest in activities or hobbies normally enjoyed, changes in eating and sleeping habits, sudden moodiness, and becoming withdrawn from family and friends.

During late adulthood, concerns over age-related physical and mental issues will inevitably crop up.

Mobility problems, dementia and anxiety issues, and coping with the changes or losses in finances and relationships are only some of the emotional challenges older adults face.

Do not disregard these mood or behavioural changes and ignore them in the hope that they will go away. The treatment and management of depression requires a multidimensional approach which includes controlling the stress triggers and getting help when needed. Seek advice from doctors and health care professionals on emotional health.

Maintaining a healthy lifestyle helps to reduce the stresses that trigger depression as well. Have a balanced diet, maintain a healthy weight, get adequate sleep, keep active by exercising, or learn a mindfulness activity such as yoga, meditation, or tai chi. Develop a hobby like reading, gardening, singing, photography or drawing. Volunteer in your community, widen your circle of friends, or travel. Spend quality time and connect with your family and loved ones. Remember, you can make positive changes to keep depression at bay.

recycling or Upcycling?Danny Seo, an interior designer and upcycling advocate, warns about its polar opposite; downcycling. He cites an example of downcycling where a bottle was transformed into a bird feeder so ugly that it failed to attract birds. Upcycling is a superior form of recycling. When we recycle an old item, the resulting products are usually of lesser quality than the original. Simply reusing an item does not result in upcycling either.

What types of Materials and tools Are Used? You can also consider using materials such as fabric, wood, paper, metal, and other things you find at home. The common tools needed for creating basic crafts would be sufficient. Tools required depend on the design of the product you wish to create and they may vary from item to item. Danny Seo suggests purchasing tools that you need for each project instead of stocking your storeroom with tools you don’t need yet.

Transforming an old item into something new and of higher value is called upcycling. It is one of the latest trends in home décor. All you need to do is give an old item a new lease of life by making it brighter, trendier, and putting it to better use.

For example, an old pair of denim jeans can be sewn into a durable tote bag, while wine bottles can be made into stylish lamps.

Vampires in the lemon Grove Author: Karen Russell Call no.: RUS – [SH] (also available in ebook format)All rights reserved. London: Chatto & Windus, 2013.

Russell’s collection of short stories is a mix of the surreal and the familiar. Set across various countries and periods, her characters include the titular vampires Clyde and Magreb, who avoid human blood by gorging on lemons; Kitsune, one of many young girls from the Japanese Meiji era transformed into hideous silk-spinning creatures to serve the empire; a stable of sentient horses who believe they were Presidents of the United States in a former life; and even Beverly, an otherwise normal massage therapist who encounters a veteran soldier with a mysterious tattoo. Despite the diversity, every story is haunting and imaginative, and Russell’s spellbinding prose ensures you are glued to the very end.

CATATAN EDITOR

Kepentingan Kitar Semula

Tahukah anda tentang upcycling?

Page 20: What is Upcycling?
