Pro and Con

perspectives

Opinions of people

The effect of Internet on music industry in some cases are very pleasant for celebrities, organizers, etc.

In last century the distance between artists and fans decreased so much.

One more advantage is that we get songs for nothing.

Key points of

project

• Nowadays almost all people in the world love listening to music, watching films and drawing some pictures and everyone do it themselves.

• For example, 10-15 years ago people used CDs to watch films or to listen to music. They buy them, and so spent their money for one time. As for arts, people used to go to museums and exhibitions to look at popular pictures. But after born an era of Internet and social media and changed everything. Now people do not use CDs so often. And exhibitions people visit only if they want, but at another time they know about news in this areas by social media and Internet. One more advantage of new era is that it all became very comfortable to use. Today, one of the reason of sitting in the internet is to download new song. In addition, some people find it very comfortable and useful in saving your time. But others argue against saying that it will not lead to anything good. So let’s look at arguments of both sides.

Benefits• Younger artists can be in contact and ask anything from their

teachers or friends their misunderstandings or just share with their success in music and art

• Artists and musicians get new fans Twitter and Facebook has also weakened the record label’s strong

grip on their own artists. Musicians now have the freedom to connect and have conversations with their fans without any filter or approval from their label heads. Also, many artists are now premiering their new singles and album dates on these websites, taking away the jobs of their A&R reps. This direct information to their fans (the consumer) takes away the middle man of their record label. So instead of record labels and radio personalities telling fans what they should listen to, the fans are now discovering the music on their own.

• Get songs for anything($ 17 or even free)• Change how people are related to each other• The impact of social and the internet has changed the context of the

way we experience music. We used to go to record stores to buy music, and clubs to hear it. Yet now it is so different and online. There is a different interaction with music now and a different social context around it.

• It is fast, if you are looking at what it does socially. Fans are more inclined and informed about their favorite artists and artists who are in the same genres, making the radii of musicians and music fans alike all the greater. With artists like Lil Wayne who has over 3 million followers on twitter, and Katy Perry who has well over 9 million followers, it is safe to say that the music industry is a more intertwined and intimate one. But is it a more successful one?

• According to the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) January 2011, sales of music in digital form had risen only 6 percent worldwide in 2010, even as the overall music market had shrunk 8 or 9 percent, extending a decade-long decline.

Opinions of people• David Coulthard The future is more social and more mobile. To think

that people are stopping to think that technology is a separate thing, it is now in everything and it is a lot more connected. In terms of advice it is important to think about the changing context of the audience.

I would agree on all of the trends, as well as adding in the medium of video and its importance. I would like to see more innovation, and that fusion of innovation and art to create beautiful music.

• Martin Espindola, student and new musician “Anyone can make music and put it on YouTube or

Facebook or MySpace. Plus YouTube has helped people learn faster, and people get famous faster too.”

Problems• Social media and the internet is a both a blessing and a curse. It can be a

music professional’s and marketer’s dream, but also their worst nightmare. It can be used simply to build a good buzz, and a brand for an artist. However, it can hinder growth and adversely effect production quality of music; there are many parts that make up the sum of the product and unfortunately if there’s nothing to harvest form the seed, you will starve to hunger. Nevertheless, in contrast, musically this is what happens. The creators will have to cut back, because of less revenue, they will no longer be able to hire musicians, mixers, or whatever they might need. The desire for complex musicality will starve, thus will continue to falter and flounder.

• Nevertheless, the mechanical royalties for one song royalties are quite menial, which is about 12% to 15%, and is sad for someone who spend the majority of the time creating that song. Now imagine, if you spent days or weeks perfecting a song on a new album, and the next day it get leaked. Worse off, it got a million downloads in the next couple of days, and you didn’t get retribution for labor. In simple terms, you potentially lost $120,000, which you have to pay off your manager, and whatever advance credit you incurred. Also, you have bills to pay and perhaps other mouths to feed.

• Do not go to concerts in order to save time and money, but watch video of this concert which would be uploaded in the internet.Hence, organizers lose money

• Though the expansion of the internet has helped a lot for the progression of music socially, and provided listeners with a wide variety of musical talents, it has presented another problem for musicians and those on the business end of it all; piracy.

• In the same article, the IFPI said, “Jobs are at risk across the creative industries. Independent research in 2010 from Tera Consultants, backed by trade unions, found that 1.2 million jobs could be lost across the creative industries in Europe alone by 2015 if no action is taken to tackle piracy.” Though the growth of digital sales may be a pseudo-comfort for many, when compared to the loss of physical and in-store retail revenue, the growth may not be enough. In short, the growth of the music industry via the Internet and social networking is something to be upheld. However, the dwindling business success rate of that industry is troublesome and could prove to be catastrophic in the future.

• In modern society music plays very important and vital role, so people always try to vary ways of access and music themselves. As for arts, they are integral part of peoples’ life. Anyway, social media and Internet solved problems with money, popularity, time and access. Music and art became available almost everywhere, with the aid of Internet. But at the same time affect of social media and Internet changed people and not always in a good way. In any case, I can say that the impact is very huge and noticeable , and most of people already cannot live without Internet and music, art. And I’m not exception, because I like listening to music.

Evaluation• Finding resources was interesting for this research

exercise, with the internet providing video, blogs, quotes and pictures.

• The amount of time available and the format limited what could be included.

• It was easy to find different perspectives • To make this better, more time and details could be

used. • Having a partner peer review my work was a benefit
