What is the Baha® system?• The BAHA system has been a well recognized hearing
treatment for conductive and mixed hearing losses since 1977 (Collaborative effort between Nobelpharma, University of Gothenborg, and Chalmer’s University)
• The BAHA system is an implanted direct bone conduction hearing rehabilitation system (osseointegration)
• Sound is conducted through the skull bone bypassing the middle ear and stimulates the cochlea
• The BAHA system produces natural sound through direct bone conduction
• The BAHA system is composed of three parts: a titanium implant, an external abutment and a sound processor
FDA Clearances (1996 – 2002)
1996– the BAHA system was cleared to treat mixed and conductive hearing
loss.
1999– the BAHA system was cleared for pediatric use in children age five
and older.
2001– the BAHA system was cleared for bilateral fittings.
2002– the BAHA system was cleared for use in patients with unilateral
sensorineural hearing loss also known as Single Sided Deafness (SSD).
Types of Hearing Loss the Baha® System Can Help
• Mixed and Conductive hearing loss – unilateral or bilateral fitting– Due to examples such as:
• Chronic otitis media• Congenital atresia/Microtia• Cholesteatoma• Middle ear dysfunction/disease
Direct bone conduction
Summary:
• Works independently of ear canal and middle ear
• Direct transmission gives clear sound
• Preoperative testing possible
• High wearing comfort
• Safe and simple surgery
Advantages of the Baha® Systemin comparison to other alternatives
Mixed and Conductive Hearing Loss
• No occlusion of the ear canal
• No feedback problems
• Sound bypasses the middle ear
• Predictable results
• Low risk for the patient
• Reversible surgery
• More comfortable• Better sound quality• Aesthetic

Personal Hygiene
Simply clean skin around the abutment with a soft cleaning brush and gentle soap. This type of cleaning should take place at minimum
1 time daily after the area is healed from surgery.
• One-Stage Surgery– Surgical procedure: Fixture and Abutment installation– 3-4 month osseointegration period– Fitting of the Sound Processor
• Two-Stage Surgery– Surgical procedure: Fixture installation– 3-6 month osseointegration– Surgical procedure: Abutment installation– 3-6 week healing period– Fitting of the Sound Processor
