RE F E RE NCE : C l i f t o n , R . A . , "W h a t I s T a l c ? " Def ini t ions for Asbestos and OtherHea l th-Related Si licates , AS TM STP 834, Benjamin Levadie, Ed., American Society forTesting and Materials, Philadelphia, 1984, pp. 158-174.ABSTRACT: Talc is a hydrated magnesium silicate produced by the metamorphosis ofdolomite and quartzose rocks or by the hydrothermal alteration of ultramafic and maficrocks. As the changes are rarely complete and uniform, the rocks usually contain one ormore other minerals. In pure form it is the softest of minerals. Talc is an extremely usefuland economically important mineral and is, like most materials, hazardous to a degree. This paper takes the position that talc is a victim. It is a victim of the imprecision ofmineral terminology, which does not distinguish between the fibrous and nonfibrous va-rieties o f several amphiboles. It is a victim of the terminology o f its ow n industry, whichsold "fib rous tal c" for many years. It is victimized because precursor minerals in fibroushabit produce pseudomorphic talc fibers. Those same fibers are sometimes unaltered andpresent in talc in just enough quantity to give a near truth to claims that talc containsasbestos. Talc is a vic tim of monitoring m ethods that are totally nonspecific and call eachelongate particle of whatever origin a fiber and, by analogy, asbestos. Most especially, talc is a victim of imp recise asbestos definitions, w hich allow the inclusion o f mostamphibole particles of some elongation in those definitions.KEY WORDS" health-related silicates, talc, asbestos, definitions
