WHAT IS SAVING FAITH IN CHRIST?
It is Trust that Jesus CAN Save Us
• Why can he save us?1. He is the fulfillment of prophecy
Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that
everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be
fulfilled.” Then he opened their minds to understand the Scriptures, (Luke 24:44-45 ESV)
Therefore the Lord himself will give you a sign. Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and shall call his
name Immanuel. (Isaiah 7:14 ESV)
Born of a virgin
But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose
coming forth is from of old, from ancient days. (Micah 5:2 ESV)
Born in Bethlehem
Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout aloud, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming
to you; righteous and having salvation is he, humble and mounted on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.
(Zechariah 9:9 ESV)
Entered Jerusalem on a colt
Even my close friend in whom I trusted, who ate my bread, has lifted his heel against me. (Psalm 41:9 ESV)
Betrayed by a friend
…and they weighed out as my wages thirty pieces of silver. Then the LORD said to me, “Throw it to the potter”—the lordly price at which I was priced by them. So I took the thirty pieces of silver and threw them into the house of
the LORD, to the potter. (Zechariah 11:12-13 ESV)
Sold for 30 pieces of silver
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the
chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed. (Isaiah 53:5 ESV)
Pierced for our transgressions
Therefore I will divide him a portion with the many, and he shall divide the spoil with the strong, because he poured
out his soul to death and was numbered with the transgressors; ...(Isaiah 53:12 ESV)
Killed with criminals
And they made his grave with the wicked and with a rich man in his death, although he had done no violence,
and there was no deceit in his mouth. (Isaiah 53:9 ESV)
Buried by a rich man
For you will not abandon my soul to Sheol, or let your holy one see corruption. (Psalm 16:10 ESV)
Resurrected from the dead
It is Trust that Jesus CAN Save Us
• Why can he save us?1. He is the fulfillment of prophecy
2. He sacrificed Himself for our sins
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a
ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45 ESV)
Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for
his friends. (John 15:13 ESV)
Love, not nails, held Jesus to the cross
…and he died for all, that those who live might no longer live for
themselves but for him who for their sake died and was raised. (2
Corinthians 5:15 ESV)
He died, so that all might live for Him
It is Trust that Jesus CAN Save Us
• Why can he save us?1. He is the fulfillment of prophecy
2. He sacrificed Himself for our sins
3. His word was confirmed with miracles
…but if I do them, even though you do not believe me, believe the works, that you may know and understand that the Father is in me and I am in
the Father.” (John 10:38 ESV)
Now Jesus did many other signs in the presence of the disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written so that you may
believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his
name. (John 20:30-31 ESV)
…and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his
resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, (Romans 1:4 ESV)
The supreme miracle/proof was his resurrection
It is Trust that Leads to Obedience
Nevertheless, many even of the authorities believed in him, but for fear of the Pharisees they did not confess it, so that they would not be put out of the synagogue; for they loved the glory that comes
from man more than the glory that comes from God.
(John 12:42-43 ESV)
For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, so also faith apart from
works is dead.(James 2:26 ESV)
It is Trust that Leads to Obedience
Whoever believes in the Son has eternal life; whoever
does not obey the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains on
him. (John 3:36 ESV)
…whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the
same way in which he walked. (1 John 2:6 ESV)
It is Trust Which Comes from God’s Word
Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. (John 17:17 ESV)
“I do not ask for these only, but also for those who will believe in me
through their word, that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in
me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may
believe that you have sent me. (John 17:20-21 ESV)
It is Trust Which Comes from God’s Word
So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through
the word of Christ. (Romans 10:17 ESV)
Confidence and trust come from what it SAYS, not from
what it doesn’t say
It is Trust Which Comes from God’s Word
And we also thank God constantly for this,
that when you received the word of God, which you
heard from us, you accepted it not as the word of men but as what it really is, the word
of God, which is at work in you believers.
(1 Thessalonians 2:13 ESV)
Saving Faith is Only as Good as It’s Object
• Faith that Jesus can save us
• Faith that leads to obedience
• Faith which comes from God’s word
Jesus Christ give great assurance.…everyone who lives and believes in me shall
never die. Do you believe this?” (John 11:26 ESV)
