WHAT IS PRAGMATIC SPIRITUALITY?

Pragmatic Spirituality is an open discussion group that meets twice a month at AJ. The group is facilitated by Courtney Snyder, MD (Holistic Psychiatrist) and Marty Snyder (Business & Leadership Advisor.)

The seed of the discussions is a brief inspiration by a spiritual thinker who encourages inner dialogue and listening to one’s “inner teacher.” Woven throughout are examples of the Jewish perspective on attention to the soul. We address how we find purpose and meaning, how we navigate practical challenges in our daily lives, and how we mitigate stressors in this modern time. Feel free to attend and participate, or listen quietly :-).

You’re invited to give this group a try. For additional information, please contact Dr. Courtney Snyder at [email protected]. Join us from 10:00 – 11:15 a.m. in the Benovitz Family Library for Pragmatic Spirituality on the dates listed below:

July 7th Topic: “Beyond the Half Moon - Exploring Our Shadow Side”

July 14th Topic: “The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant.” - Albert Einstein

You’ve read about it in the Messenger. You’ve heard about it in Shabbat Announcements. You’ve seen publicity about it in the AJ email blasts. So what exactly is Pragmatic Spirituality, and is it right for you?

HIGH HOLY DAY SEAT RESERVATIONS

As we begin planning for the High Holy Days, we ask our members with outstanding account balances to please remit all funds immediately. In

keeping with the synagogue’s bylaws, High Holy Day seat reservation packets are only sent to those members with balances no older than 90 days. For your convenience, we take all major credit cards as well as monthly bank drafts. Please call our Financial Administrator, Holly Southwick at 649-8135 if you have any questions about your synagogue account. AJ values all of our members, and we look forward to your active participation! IMPORTANT CHANGE IN

SHABBAT SITTER SERVICE! Adath Jeshurun has been pleased to provide complimentary Shabbat Sitter Service every week for many years!

To better utilize synagogue funds, Shabbat Sitter Service will now be provided only if advance reservations are made. Sitter service will remain complimentary, and is offered for children six weeks old through grade two. Parents of children using sitter service must remain in the synagogue the entire time that sitter service is being used.

AJ will continue to provide complimentary Sitter Service on days when Bar/Bat Mitzvah ceremonies are scheduled, and reservations are not needed for these Saturdays.

In order for Adath Jeshurun to schedule childcare workers, reservations must be received by noon on the Wednesday prior to the Shabbat when reservations are needed.

Reservations can easily be made by registering at: www.adathjeshurun.com/sitter or by calling the AJ office at 458-5359.

RESERVATIONS ARE REQUIRED FOR 2019 HIGH HOLY DAY SERVICES

High Holy Day Seat Reservation packets will be mailed soon. In keeping with security recommendations, reservations are again required for all members and

guests. All reservations will be compiled in a database that staff and volunteers will check at the entrance doors. Once checked, members and guests will proceed inside as usual.

Please don’t let financial circumstances keep you from attending. Everyone is wanted, and everyone is welcome! Members seeking financial assistance to reserve High Holy Day seats are asked to contact Rabbi Slosberg at [email protected], well in advance of the High Holy Days.

DO YOU HAVE A CHILD

IN GRADES K - 12?

One of the wonderful privileges of membership at AJ is the opportunity to enroll your child in our shared religious school, LBSY. AJ pays a portion of the tuition at

both LBSY and the High School of Jewish Studies (HSJS) for each child of an AJ member in good financial standing with the shul. Registration is now open for the 2019 - 2020 school year at both LBSY and the High School of Jewish Studies. Registration information is below.

2019 CELEBRATION OF LEARNING RECAP

At the Celebration of Learning on June 2, 2019, we were pleased to honor Rabbi Laura Metzger for Excellence in Teaching and Curriculum Development. Our keynote speaker, Dr. Melanie-Prejean Sullivan shared: “…I felt as though I was in heaven when I joined Melton… It has given me new answers to my questions, not only about Judaism, but about what my love for its study means in my own call to interfaith chaplaincy…”

We celebrated with the graduates of the two-year Core Curriculum: Muriel Handmaker, Susan Klempner, Jennifer Leibson, Larry Snyder, Karen Strauss, and Sarah Wall.

Louisville Melton thanks the following donors for contributions made in honor of Rabbi Metzger:

Benefactors: William & Dora Esakov

Angel: Ted Shlechter

Patrons: Neil Davidoff & Felissa Goldstein, Muriel Handmaker, Sidney & Barbara Hymson, and Ed & Marcia Segal

Sponsors: Cybil Flora, Larry & Cheryl Hughett, Bob & Margie Kohn, David & Phyllis Leibson, Stanley Sternberg & Susan Eichenberger, and Estela Valdez

Donors: Nancy Blodgett, Gita Comer, Sandy Flaksman, Sonny & Janet Meyer, Chuck & Sarah O’Koon, Frank Schwartz & Linda Leeser, Jonathan Silpayanamant & Melanie Hughes, Emily Podgursky, Lynn Rosenthal, Carole Snyder, and Gloria Soltes

NEWS FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES

The following speech was delivered to the Congregation at the 2019 AJ Annual Meeting by President, Bill Esakov:

I was inspired by the recent Cantor’s Convention that was held

in Louisville. It took the effort of the entire community to successfully host this event. We were thrilled to receive the support of Corporate donors, other Jewish organizations, and the many volunteers who assisted. I am very proud of our synagogue and the extraordinary effort that occurred both in public and behind the scenes. Rabbi Slosberg, Cantor Lipp, the AJ staff, and the huge committee of volunteers chaired by Elliott Rosengarten are all owed a huge debt of gratitude! We also want to thank those people who made sure that our minyan services took place during times when both Rabbi Slosberg and Cantor Lipp were involved in convention activities. It was truly heartwarming to see our congregation come together and be engaged in such a wonderful communal project.

For the coming year, I would like to set as one of our goals to have at least one event that will engage those that don’t normally participate in AJ activities, and I need your help to achieve this. I am not envisioning a program as grand as the Cantor’s Convention. I am envisioning fun activities such as a bike-riding group, a Mahjong team, or perhaps a Bridge tournament. I realize that most who are present this evening are already engaged, but perhaps each of you could invite and bring a friend or family member to an AJ program that you enjoy, so that we can achieve this goal.

The long-term success of AJ can be achieved if the congregation feels connected and engaged. We saw proof of this during the Cantor’s Convention.

In closing, I would like to thank Rabbi Slosberg, Cantor Lipp, Robin Silverman, our Preschool Director, Sara Gambrell, the wonderful AJ staff, the AJ Board, and the Congregation for their help and support during my first year as President. It is all of you that make AJ special to me, to our visitors, and to our guests.

A new Louisville Melton course will begin in September at Adath Jeshurun. The course is titled “Modern Living: Maintaining Balance.” The four-part course takes a look at a selection of classic and modern Jewish texts from the renowned Florence Melton Adult School curriculum that relates to this contemporary

challenge. Participants will discover Jewish wisdom that helps us to balance between the needs and demands of family, work, community, and self. The course will take place on Tuesday Evenings at 6:30 p.m. beginning on September 3rd, or on Thursday mornings at 9:30 a.m. beginning on September 5th. The fee for the course is $50. Contact Deborah Slosberg at [email protected] for more information or to enroll.

NEW MELTON CLASS BEGINS THIS FALL!

Did you know that cars pulling into the front gates at AJ cannot see cars exiting through those gates? Because of near-miss accidents at the gates, AJ has designated this a “Do Not Enter” area for exiting traffic. Despite posted signs that state: “Do Not Enter,” people frequently ignore the signs and exit through those gates. For the safety of everyone, please only exit the parking lot at the bottom of the hill onto Douglass Boulevard. Thank you for your cooperation in helping to keep everyone safe!
