Social media
Old media given new form via the internet
So what?
Digital media is ubiquitous– it’s everywhere and you can’t
stop it.
Some stats
Social media overtook porn and email as the #1 activity on the web.
Facebook is the most searched subject on Google.
In 2009, online students outperformed traditionally taught students in America.
If Facebook were a country, it would be the fifth largest in the world with 2x America’s population.
80% of companies worldwide use social media for recruitment.
22% of Fortune 500 companies have a public facing blog.
In 2009, social gamers (Farmville) bought $2.2 BILLION in virtual online goods. That number is expected to grow to $6 BILLION by 2013.
In 20 minutes, Facebook sees—15 BILLION wall posts
2.7 MILLION photos
10.2 MILLION comments
Despite culturally specific social networks like Cloob (Farsi) and Mahktoob (Arabic), Facebook is still the most popular social network.

Aspects of social media
New media technologies DEMOCRATIZE content.
This puts the USER in control.
That means more dialogue, less monologue!
…it also means more pictures of cats saying weird things in idiosyncratic language.
New media & CNO/CNAThink of new media as content that is PLATFORM-AGNOSTIC.
Two reasons that platform-focused operations will become less and less important/reliable
Increase in mobile device use
Shift from data storage on local devices to “the Cloud”
WTF is the “CLOUD???
”Imagine a data storage & communication network accessible from any device, anytime, anywhere there is an internet connection.
Cloud networks are UBIQUITOUS:
Google Apps
Dropbox
Apple iCloud
So… how to influence in a new media age?
Target the cloud
Learn pattern recognition… fast
Know your
memes
