Programs In the Big Brothers Big Sisters program, each child is matched one‐to‐one with a Big Brother or Big Sister Mentor. Commu‐nity based matches meet at last twice monthly for ac vi es in the  community,  at  home,  or  at  agency  ac vi es.   Mentors offer children new experiences they otherwise may not have due to a shortage of  me or funds at home.  This could be as simple as  learning  to bake or going fishing.   As  the children get older,  it may  include developing good hygiene habits or learning to manage money and, eventually, making post high school  plans,  filling  out  job  applica ons  or  college  applica‐ons.  School based matched meet once weekly at the child’s

school, during the child’s  lunch and recess  me.   The school offers space for them to talk, play games, do cra s, or go out on  school  grounds. All mentors  go  through  enrollment  and screening with trained professional staff and receive training prior to being matched.   Each match receives follow up sup‐port from professional staff for the dura on of their  involve‐ment.  Outcomes  Mentors offer posi ve role modeling  in self confidence, aca‐demic  success and good decision making.   As a  result,  local and  na onal  surveys  show  that  children  with  one‐to‐one mentors do be er academically, have higher aspira ons, and avoid risky behaviors.  In 2013, 97% of children matched one year or more achieved  success  in at  least one of  the  target areas of confidence, competence and caring.  A na onal Har‐ris  Interac ve  study  showed  that  children with  one‐on‐one mentors  had  higher  aspira ons  for  themselves  and  were more  likely  to a end college  than  their peers without men‐tors.   Mentors  support children  in breaking genera onal cy‐cles  of  poverty,  school  drop‐out  and  dependency  on  social systems.    Children  with  one‐on‐one  mentors  have  an  in‐creased  chance  of  becoming  self‐sufficient,  contribu ng members of the community as adults.

Ready to be Matched Activities are offered for chil-dren enrolled but not yet matched with a mentor. Activi-ties are provided in collaboration with community groups. Children were able to bowl, play mini-golf, try archery, go fishing and play soccer.

LifeSmith is an extension of the Community Based pro-gram for matches with Middle School children. Partici-pants set academic goals and begin career exploration through group visits to local businesses. Visits included a restaurant, a credit union, a hospital and the fire depart-ment.

Girl Power holds bi-monthly activities for female match-es in collaboration with Elevate Inc. with a focus on healthy choices for girls and avoiding involvement in drug or alcohol use. The girls enjoyed an overnight at Camp Silverbrook, a Zumba class and a scrapbooking night.

Guys Night Out at Cabela’s provides hands on ex-perience in outdoor hobbies. Staff provide a presenta-tion about an activity along with a chance to handle equipment. Many activities are offered to all matches, girls and boys. This year’s topics included camp cooking and fly fishing.

Sisterhood - Sisterhood is a chance for the Big Sisters to get together in a social setting and talk about their match experiences and share ideas related to the unique aspects of mentoring young girls.

Cynthia Mott Memorial Scholarship for the seventh year, current and former Littles graduating from high school were able to apply for a $2000 scholarship toward technical school or college. The scholarship fund was left by former Big Sister Cindy Mott, who lost her battle with cancer in 2006.

Match Activities are offered to all matches to attend together. Over 200 people attended the recognition din-ner held at West Bend Mutual Prairie Center. It is an evening of celebration and camaraderie for Bigs, Littles, families, and community supporters. The annual picnic on Cedar Lake offers a chance for food and fun on the water with other matches. O
