Geography

Located on the Italian Peninsula.

-750 Miles Long (NC. 200 miles).

-150 Miles Wide (NC . 800 miles). Divided north to south by Apennine mts. Three main fertile plains for agriculture.

-Po River in the north.

-Plain of Latium (Where Rome was founded).

-Campania (south of Latium).

Located 18 miles from the Mediterranean (Med.) sea along the Tiber river.

-Easy crossing of the Tiber.

-Good access to the sea.

-Easy to defend from inland and seaward attacks.

A Rome-ing we will go

Built on Seven hills.

-Easy to defend.

-Washington D.C. also built on seven hills.

-Good central location. Italy extended into the Mediterranean (Med) sea.

-Rome became a cross roads for the Mediterranean.

-Easy to control the Empire.

Indo-Europeans move to Italy between 1500-1000 BCE.

Latins:

-Lived in region of Latium.

-Spoke Latin.

-Herders and farmers.

-Lived in huts atop the 7 hills.

Greeks (800 BCE) Settled in southern Italy and France. Influenced Rome

-Artistic and cultural models through sculptures, architecture, and literature.

Etruscans. Influenced Rome the most.

-Began building program that turned Rome into a city.

-Organized the Roman army.

Roman Republic

Est. 509 (BCE). Republic: A form of government in which the

leader is not a monarch, and certain people have the right to vote.

246 BCE Rome controlled all of Italy. Roman Confederation.

-Allowed Latins to have full citizenship.

-Most other conquered communities were allies.

-Free to self govern, but had to send soldiers to Roman armies.

-Loyal allies could become citizens.

Gladiators

Three types of Gladiators Murmillo- Heavy weight. Large shield and

infantry sword Hoplomachus- Medium weight. Small round

shield and spear. Retiarius- Light weight. No shield, trident and

net.
