WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT TECHNOLOGIES FROM

THE PROCESS OF CONSTRUCTING THE PRODUCT

Filming

Lighting The lighting we used for the

shoot consists of a hot light being placed at correct angles to the focus to give good effects of shadows and lighting characters and objects that need to be the focus.

This part of equipment is significant to the media we created as its what makes a film noir what it is. Film noir relies on the lighting of the scene to create the effect it produces.

However, the name of this equipment gives a clue that it does become hot when in use and therefore it needs care to hold and reduces the time of usage before its unbearable to hold and out of use until it cools down.

Camera The camera used gave a good

resolution to the film and definition. We placed the camera in the horizontal widescreen angle to give a full screen effect for the audience.

We need the camera for our media in order to capture what we have produced in the best quality possible. We can use the camera in different angles to tell the story remotely as different angles create different effect to what is happening. It creates the mood and tension in the motions the camera takes.

However, the camera consists of a microphone which unfortunately couldn’t pick up high quality sound from the scenes which is needed to be replaced during editing.

tripod An accessory for constructing

our product. Used to combine with the camera in order to obtain still shots without the use of human motion.

It can be set for high and low angles and set the height of the camera that is set on top. The camera can be panned smoothly with the tripod without unwanted movement in the shot giving a professional shot.

However, this bit of equipment does not have the ability to make a tracking shot . The height adjustment mechanism does not have the efficient height we needed for one of our shots. Therefore we had to handle it as efficient as possible with the tripod. To ensure safety and a good shot at the same time.

Editing

Final cut We used final cut as our main source for

editing. We used it to combine our shots, cancel the background sound and add in our narration and backing track. For our media it was used to time the shots right with the backing track and cut the shots to the parts that are needed.

We used it as well to edit the text fade in and out to create effect throughout our product. Final cut was also useful for controlling the volume of the backing track and the narration in order to give the best effect possible.

Final cut was also a great use for the black and white filter for the whole scene. We used a small percentage of sharpness in order to give the effect of an old film like original film noirs.

However for Final cut, the slight drawback was the limit on text transitions that caused problems for the original idea. So we had to create a second option for the product.

After effects software

We experimented with a software that allowed us to create effects for the text and transitions for the scene and different filters were available.

After experiencing unwelcome lag to the product with this software, we scraped the idea of using after effects and decided the only way to edit the product with experienced software was with final cut.

Microphone on camera As mentioned before, the microphone on the camera did

not have the efficiency to be used while filming the scenes. It is, however, a good microphone to use for the recording of the narration.

After hiring a quiet room to reduce the background sound, we used the camera’s microphone to record the narration for the product. Using this idea meant we had to delete the video recording from the camera on final cut and leave the audio recording on to overlap the visual recordings we already have. This equipment gave a clear recording for the product we used .

However, the lack of a filter meant that the recording still picked up background noise and gave a little lack of quality.
