What happened to you when you got injured or ill during the war
Soldiers were at risk of getting hurt or ill when living in the trenches
Trenches did not provide much protection
They were cold, wet and muddy
Soldiers could be hurt by bombs or bullets
Some soldiers carried first aid bags
This is an original first aid bag
Compare it to our modern first aid kit in the classroom
Often soldiers needed more than first aid
Sometimes a soldier needed to go for more treatment. They would be taken by stretcher to the dressing station
At the dressing station, a soldier would be assessed and treated or moved to a hospital
The hospitals would be away from the fighting.
Women were allowed to work in the hospitals
Many of the soldiers were terribly injured and many died.
Some soldiers needed many months in hospital to get well again.
