Teach students to write in order to express opinions and persuade while using relevant evidence for support. Move away from writing solely to convey experience.

Make a dramatic shift in the direction towards informational text. Have students read deeper into text and use text evidence to make inferences rather than regurgitating facts or simply retelling plot details.

Ensure that grammar instruction needs to focus on overall communication skills of students. Students need to be able to write and speak clearly.

Involve all students 2x a quarter in close reading at the high end of their grade text level range.
