What is ‘Islam?’ - A monotheistic Religion- Followers are called Muslims- Largest Prophet (Messenger of God) is Muhammad- Islam means “To submit to God” in Arabic

The Beginning of Islam--Muhammad born in 570 A.D in city of Mecca (Cannot be pictured according to Islamic tradition)

-- He was troubled by moral problems in Mecca, especially greed! ($$$)

-- According to Islamic tradition…

At 40 he was called by the angel Gabriel to be a messenger for God

God = Allah in Arabic

Example: “Praise be to Allah”

The Hijra: A Turning Point-- At first few people listened to Muhammad

-- Merchants were angered at Muhammad denouncing pagan Gods

-- Threatened with Murder he left Mecca for ‘Yathrib’

This became a holy Islamic journey called the ‘hijra’

Later, Yathrib was renamed Medina or ‘The city of the prophet’

622 became the 1st year of the Muslim calendar

Islam grows slowly at first...Muhammad initially fights with the powerful merchants in Mecca

He wins the battles and spreads Islam throughout much of The Arabian Peninsula

Marches on Mecca, destroys ‘false idols’ in the ‘Kaaba’ (The temple dedicated to Abraham)

Islamic Teachings...Holy Book = Quran

Abraham, Moses, and Jesus were prophets, but Muhammad the greatest

5 Basic ‘Duties’ or Five Pillars of Islam

1) Declaration of faith 2) pray 5 times daily 3) Charity to the poor 4) Fasting, or not eating during the day during the month of Ramadan 5) Make the pilgrimage to Mecca

‘Jihad’ = Holy War or struggle in God’s service

‘People of the Book’ = Jews and Christians are superior to Polytheists
