  ================ Michael#29 Jordan:

November 29, 2007 6:11 PMHere are several of the things I learned from the Hinduism presentation: 1. Hinduism is not a real word. The correct word is Sanatana Dharma, which is based on science.

2. India thanks its success to its knowledge, resources, and rivers, which provided them fertile river valleys to farm.

3. The caste system was an efficient social order until it was abused by corrupt Brahmins. In the caste system, gurus(teachers) are the most important people in society because they passed down all their knowledge they get through meditating through oral tradition.

4. Ancient India was home to many firsts. These include the first university: Nalada, which was torn down during the Persian invasions; the first given value of pi made by Aryabhata; the first discoveries math, algebra, and geometry which were made by Indian scholars; and the first brain surgeries, which were made by Sushruta.

What I liked about the presentation was that the woman explained everything in detail and included many interesting facts.

.   ================ Shante Markman:   November 28, 2007 8:49 PM

1.The first thing that I learned was Hindus believed in one 'God' with multiple imaginative representations.

2.They were the first university the world Nalanda and the first to give the value of Pi and the first to perform brain surgery.

3. And the last thing that I learned was that Hindu society is rich in diversity and that fire is important to all Indian Celebrations.

  ================ Emily Sims#21Shelley:

November 28, 2007 8:55 PMI learned many things from the Hinduism presentation. 1. That they believe in only one god but in many different forms. 2. That when the British ruled it they changed many many names of rivers, mountains etc... 3. That the word father originally comes from the word Pitr in Sanskrit.

What I liked about the presentation was that she knew how to present it to us in a way that we could understand it. Also she had really cool slides, that had a lot of interesting information on them. I thought the presentation was pretty cool.

1. I learned that Indian scholars first used math. Before, I always thought that the Chinese did, because i once looked it up for a project.

2. I learned many Sanskrit words and their meanings/pronounciations from our guest speaker.

3. I also learned that India was not always ruled by the Indian people, but my foreigners for about 800 years

What I like best about the presentation was the fact that the guest speaker made sure we understood everything before going on, and that she didn't make things boring.

================ Anshul#22 shelley:   November 29, 2007 4:47 PM

The presentation was very interesting. What I liked best was that she had a slideshow, so that if you didn't understand something, you could look up there. She also explained everything clearly.

These are the three things I learned: 1. The Hindu's had the first university, value of pi, the figure of math/algebra/geometry, performance of brain surgery, and made yoguh known to people.

2. The hindu's worship energy which constantly transforms itself to perform different functions ot sustain and preserve all existence.

3. The lotus represents the big bang; epanding energy; the source and connection of all life. Anshul

.   ================ James #23 Shelly:   November 28, 2007 5:54 PM

I enjoyed the presentation a lot. One fact I learned was that instead of believing in multiple gods they only believe in one. I also learned that Indians were the first to perform a successful brain surgery. Last of all I learned that Indians discovered almost all of what people think Greeks discovered. I also want to learn sanscript.

================ Ben#24 Kern:   November 28, 2007 5:56 PM

1. From this presentation I learned that the world Hinduism has no meaning it is really called Sanatana Dharma. 2. I also learned that Indians worship only one god who has no shape or gender or form. 3. Another thing I learned was that India got its name from the snide River. 4. My favorite part of the presentation was when she told us how many English words came from Sanskrit the ancient Indian language.

Page 8: What did you learn about Hinduism?? Tell me 3 things that you learned about the Hinduism presentation from Monday. Then tell me what you liked best about

================ Charles Wang #27K:

November 29, 2007 3:50 PMI learned: 1. The name Hindu comes from Sindhu River.

Its original name is Bharat. 2. Many of the words in English come from Sanskrit, an ancient Indian language.

3. Hindus only worship one god, but it can be represented in any way.

I liked how the lady explained all the Indian words, and how she answered all our questions thoroughly.

================ Matt Bicker #4 Kern:   November 29, 2007 4:04 PMWhat I learned: 1.People sometimes refer to India as Bharrat.

2.That the first people to do all sorts of math were from India. 3.In India there are around 30 different languages that they speak.

I liked all the sides, the beautiful pictures on the slides, but most of all, I liked how she described things so you could understand it very clearly.

Page 9: What did you learn about Hinduism?? Tell me 3 things that you learned about the Hinduism presentation from Monday. Then tell me what you liked best about

================ Owen#14 Kern:   November 28, 2007 7:47 PMI learned that: 1. The first people to figure math, algebra, and geometry were Indian scholars.

2. The word "Hinduism" has no meaning, and the actual name is Sanatana Dharma, which means "eternal law."

3. Hindus worship energy, which rapidly changes to maintain all life.

4. Many words and languages come from Sanskrit,

one of the world's oldest languages.

5. The sound "OM" means "eternal vibrations of the universe."

6. There are three forms of energy; the potential form, Vishnu, the kinetic form, Brahma, and the disinegrative form, Shiva.

I liked how the guest speakers came in and talked to us about India, rather than us just reading about it from the textbook. I think that guest speakers make the lesson more interesting, so you can pay attention and learn more. My favorite part of the lesson was when I learned that the invaders stole the credit for many of the Indian inhabitants' findings and discoveries. I did not know that math originated in India. India is an engaging and interesting country.

================ Amanda #21 (Kern):

November 28, 2007 9:11 PM1. There is only one God in the Hindu religion.

The reason you see many different pictures of God is because God is without form; the painters are using their imagination to create their picture of God. 2. Many languages' words,including English, originated from Sanskrit, one of the oldest languages. 3. Martin Luther King Jr.'s ideas were influenced by Mahatma Gandhi, a man who fought against the Caste system in India. My favorite part of the presentation was when we learned about yoga and "omm." I thought yoga was about stretching, which is a common misunderstanding. It's really used to balance and combine the body, mind, and soul. I always laughed at ohm, because I didn't understand why people said it while they meditated. Now I understand that people say it to make them breathe longer, making them live longer.

November 28, 2007 3:41 PM3 things I learned about Hinduism: 1). That any form of God is accepted in Hinduism. 2). Most of the research we have today started in India. 3). When British took over India, a lot of river got different names. One river's name change gave India its name.   Ms. Jordan, you might have gotten my other message. I forgot to tell you what I liked. I'm sorry. I hope it is OK if I just type it here: I liked how the speaker really talked about everything, gave us detail, and helped us understand. She was also very nice. I also enjoyed when she talked to us about how the British took over and changed The rivers' names. I thought that was interesting. Bye, Sorry!

 ================ Akash #6:   November 28, 2007 3:24 PM

What I learned was that: I did not know that Hindus worshiped energy. I did not know Hinduism has no meaning. It is really called Sanatana Dharma(enternal law) I also did not know that the first person to preform brain surgery was Sushruta Patanjali. The best part I liked was that the lady was telling me stuff that I didn't know.

November 28, 2007 3:29 PM1. The first thing I learned was that

Hinduism is based on science. 2. The second thing I learned was that how many things developed from Indian culture. Like Universities, brain surgery, Pi, and all sorts of math. 3. The last thing I learned was that teachers(Gurus) were the most high-valued people in India.

================ Remy#7 Shelley:   November 28, 2007 3:29 PMI learned that the gagnes river was originally called the gunda. I learned that the India culture believe god is all knowledge. I also learned they believe that the more you clear your mind the more knowledge you receive.

Also, I learned that all languages come from Sanskrit but they have just been transformed from their original spelling and speaking. I also learned that the word guru is a teacher that teaches only one student. My favorite part was when she showed us the designs and what they meant.

Page 15: What did you learn about Hinduism?? Tell me 3 things that you learned about the Hinduism presentation from Monday. Then tell me what you liked best about

================ Julia#8 Shelley:   November 28, 2007 3:36 PM

I learned that when a country gets controlled by another country that some names change. For instance, The Sindhu river was changed to the word Hindu because others could not pronounce the word properly. I also learned that Yoguh (that's the real name), is not just a bunch of poses but really an intricate art in which you connect the body, mind, and soul. I always thought that English words came from Latin or Greek, however I learned that Sanskrit also influenced the English language. I liked how we were told how Hitler used some symbols against what it meant, because I always wondered about that.

================ katie w. Shelley:   November 28, 2007 3:39 PM

I learned that the Europeans re-named the rivers, etc. I also learned that the women wore gandis when they weren't married.

================ Caroline:   November 28, 2007 5:39 PM

I learned a lot about India in the presentation.

I didn't know that India was first call Bharat and is still used. I can't believe the name India came from the Sindhu river!

I always thought that the first university was like just America but now I know it's from India.

I really had a lot of fun learning about India, maybe it will be one of my chooses for the country report. I really hope we can have more guest speakers to teach us about something else.

  ================ Jenna Gavenman:   November 28, 2007 5:43 PM

1. India's original name was Bharat, and it is still sometimes used.

2. Arya means a civilized, cultured, noble person. Hilter misunderstood that.

3. The word Hinduism has no meaning.

Page 18: What did you learn about Hinduism?? Tell me 3 things that you learned about the Hinduism presentation from Monday. Then tell me what you liked best about

================ Jieun Ahn#1 Kern:   November 29, 2007 3:48 PM

The 3 things that I learned:

1.Sanskrit is one of the world's oldest languages from where we get many European and Indian languages.

2.The word Hinduism has no meaning. Hinduism is base on Science.

3.India gets its name from Sindhu river and Hindu comes from Shindu too

What I like the most about the presentation was the yoga. I thought that yoga was streching and relaxing. When I listen to the presenter I was amazed. I didn't know that yoga was all about your mind,body, and soul focusing. I like it when she told us when we breathe longer we live longer like the turtles. That's why the turtles live longer I didn't know they could live longer just because they breathe longer. I wish that we have more presentation in the future. So it will make Social Studies more fun to learn about!

Page 19: What did you learn about Hinduism?? Tell me 3 things that you learned about the Hinduism presentation from Monday. Then tell me what you liked best about

================ Austin #13 Shelley:   November 28, 2007 3:41 PM

1. I learned that the Indus River really is the sindhu river and there is an underwater river branching off of the sindhu. Also, that the Ganges River is the Gungus River.

2. Secondly, I learned the swastika means peace. Unfortunately, Hitler Misunderstood it, and used it for the Nazi's symbol.

3. lastly, I learned that, If you take apart an atom, you'll get particles. If you take that apart, you'll get energy. Energy can be knowledge, love, power, etc. Energy can flow through something/someone, or be "asleep."

What fascinated me most, was how the Indians got knowledge. They would close their eyes, clear their mind, say "Om", and meditate. Then, somehow, they would receive knowledge. They would learn about chemistry and other advanced technology. I'm not sure if it's true, or maybe I misunderstood. But it's an interesting way of learning.

Matthew #19 Shelley:   November 28, 2007 5:23 PM

1. I learned that the first person to successfully perform brain surgery was a guy from India named Sushruta.

2. I also learned that cows were and still are worshiped in India and were very useful. They were also a sign of wealth rather than money was.

3. Last, I learned that many words in the English language originated from India, such as father. As the word was learned farther west, the spelling and pronunciation was totally changed.

I liked this presentation because I learned a lot about India that I hadn't already known. I think it is a fascinating country.

  ================ Alex Barreira:   November 28, 2007 6:30 PMHere's 5 things I learned. First off, I learned that Hindu people worship one god but in many forms. I also learned that India is called Buhrat. I never knew that the first ever brain surgery was performed in India, not to mention that there was an ancient language called Sanskrit. And the fact that yoga was from India, was unknown to me.

================ Brian Silverman #25J:   November 28, 2007 6:35 PM

1. I learned that there is a river in India which has shifted course to go underground. 2. I also learned that the language Sanskrit is very old and is where most of the present-day languages originate from. 3. One of the other things that I learned was that the colored powder that the Indians put on their doorsteps during Rangoli was originally to keep pests out.

The thing that I liked most about the presentation was that the presenter spent a lot of time on each slide. Even though we didn't get through very many, at least the ones we did get through we talked about in depth.

================ Anna Poltrack #22 J:   November 28, 2007 3:49 PM

I learned that "om" had come from India and had to do with the balance of mind, spirit, and body. The fact that people used rice flour to decorate their doorstep was also a surprize. it was practical, though, because it kept ants out of the house. But it was very supprizing when she said that it didn't matter if the teachers or the wisest people were killed because people could just meditate on it to rediscover the answer. I enjoyed everything about the talk, nothing in general. Just everything. We should have more people come in like this.

I thought the speech was interesting because the speaker was very clear and easy to understand. I also liked that she gave many facts about one point instead of try to move as quickly as possible to the next one. Overall, I thought the speech on Hinduism was excellent.

1.many English words come from Sanskrit

2.Hindu comes from the Sindu river

3.Mahatma Gandhi influenced Martin Luther King Jr. and Nelson Mandela

The most interesting thing in the presentation was that we got to learn a lot about India and the pictures in the presentation made it more interesting and I hope I get to see it again!!

1. How India got its original name. 2. There are so many subjects created by Indians. (two of them surgery and Math out of many) 3. So many English words were created from the English language. I enjoyed the presentation because I didn't really know much about India before this. I am glad we were able to have this chance to see the presentation. Have a nice day!

1I learned that the Persians conquered the Indians

2 The second thing I learned was that the Persians gave the Indians the name Hindus

3 I learned the name pedar means father in Persian and there is so many words for father in India

4 I learned that there is only one god that the Hindus believe in one god that is dressed in white and has six arms and two legs. I hope I go to India some day because I want to learn more about India. The last thing I learned was Indians cremate people and don’t burry them. When I was listening to the lady, I loved the speech!

I learned a lot about Hinduism this trimester. For an example, previously, India had a different name. It was Bharat before the Persians invaded India.

The second thing is that I always thought that the Hindu people always believed in many gods since there are so many pictures of their gods. It turns out that the Hindu people actually believed in one god that didn't have any form. The part about the gods really interested me because there are so many different looking gods but no one knows what form that god may be in.

The third fact is that on of the Hindu people was the first on to perform a brain surgery. I had always thought that the British had been the first ones to perform brain surgery. Know I know that the British stole the credit from the Hindus. I really enjoyed learning about India. I hope we can have more speeches in the future!

================ Thomas Simko #20/ S:   November 28, 2007 4:01 PMI learned that in India there are about 32 different languages. I also learned that if you can speak Sanskrit you can speak any language. The bindi on the forehead is to cool the mind,keep off evil, and represent the third eye. The third eye is the mind. The sound that everything made when it was created was ohm. The energy is the most important part of the Indian culture because they don't have to be physically strong, they can be mentally strong. The Indians were the first to discover yoga. Yoga is not about stretching it is about calming the mind and body like meditating. Genesha is the most worshiped god because you can explain gods with pictures in many different gods. The Indian culture only believes in one god taking shapes and forms of different gods. For a birthday they put a candle in your face. Then you put your hands over the fire and rub the smoke in your face. This lets you receive the energy that the candle gives off. I like the learning of the gods the best because I love learning about the gods and goddesses. I liked learning about how the British changed the names of the rivers and began to set up settlements and villages there second best. Third best I liked learning about Dewali, the festival of lights, and how they celebrated their different holidays. Some of their holidays are Holi(festival of color) Nauratri(dances for nine days and nine nights, and Dusherra(the tenth day of Nauratri. During a different presentation I learned that India is known for its movie industry and technology, but the presentation on Monday she did not really talk about technology or movie industry. On Monday she talked about religion. She said it like that all the Indian culture does is pray and celebrate. Even though she did not talk about the government or daily life I still really enjoyed this presentation!   ================

The first thing that I learned about Hindus was that a lot of the words had come from Sanskrit and that there was thirty-two different kind of languages.

When someone meditates, they get more oxygen so that they can live longer. The third fact that I learned was that brain surgery was the first to happen. I never thought of finding out where brain surgery had first happened. The fourth thing that I learned was that the bindi of the forehead was something to ward off evil, keep them cool, and acts as if it was a third eye. Before I thought it was like a decorative thing to put on. The last thing I learned was that the way to tell how wealthy a person is is by counting how many cows they have since they were very important to the Hindus. This was a really interesting presentation and I hope there are more to come.

================ John N.:   November 28, 2007 6:22 PM

1.I learned that India used to be called Bharat. 2.I also learned that Hindus only worshiped one god. 3.I learned the swastika is not only the Nazi symbol but symbolizes the eternal cycle of life. I like the part where she was telling us lots of things we didn't know.

I learned: 1. That Sanskrit is one of the worlds oldest languages, and that is where many English words come from. 2. Teachers, or Gurus, were regarded as the most important in Indian society. 3. The reason why India civilization rose was due to its knowledge, and rich resources.

I liked when she showed us the Indian designs that they would sometimes use, by drawing them on the floor of the classroom.

================ Sophia/Kern:   November 28, 2007 8:47 PM

1. I learned about the rivers that are located in India and what their source was. 2. The Sindu River is where India gets its name from. 3. Hinduism is based on Science. I enjoyed most learning about meditation and what "om" really means. I didn't know that yoga is when your mind, body, and soul are aligned. I thought that was really cool and I also liked learning about the agriculture too. I also didn't know that the Taj Mahal isn't a temple.

================ Jared #6/ Jordan:   November 29, 2007 6:04 PM

What I learned about India:

1. Bharat is the original name for India, and it is still used there. 2. The first university in the world was called Nalanda, which was located in India. 3. Aryabhata was actually the first person to give the value of pi. 4. A man named Sushruta was the first in the world to perform brain surgery. 5. Teachers were the most important people in Indian society because they gave children knowledge. 6. Since India was ruled by foreigners for 800 years, its accomplishments and history were never known correctly.

I thought the presention was very helpful for everyone because it seemed like the people who ruled India completely changed its history. It is great that the guest speaker could tell us about all the mistakes the historians made about India. Hopefully, over time, everybody will know the correct history of this great country.

2. India is still sometimes called Bharat.

3. Many English words come from Sanskrit.

The best part of the presentation was when we got to practice meditating. It was pretty cool!

================ Audrey #15:   November 29, 2007 3:35 PMI learned that Indians do not believe in eating meat because cows help them in so many ways like giving us milk.

India has two main rivers, the Indus and the Ganges. When the British came, they changed the names slightly.

Sanskrit is their oldest language and is still spoken today in India.

I thought it was most fun learning about the Indian's god in many forms. I thought they worshipped different gods for different reasons.

================ Kevin Klein #14-J:   November 29, 2007 3:43 PM

3 things that I learned during the Hinduism presentation are: 1. The Indus river was really the Sindhu river, that got changed as westerners came to India. 2. India's original name was Bharat, and it is still used today in India. 3. Teachers, (or gurus) were the most important people in the Indian civilization.

I liked how she used slides to show us what she was telling us.

1. I learned that cows were very important to them and that they saw how wealthy people were by counting how many cows people owned.

2. I also learned that Hindu people do not worship many Gods, but many forms of one God. I used to think they worshiped hundreds of Gods.

3. I never exactly understood why people wore little stickers on their foreheads. But now I know that it was to mark your "seeing eye", which is the "eye" that your brain has.

Sorry, I forgot to write what I liked best about the presentation.

I like how she had a lot of pictures to help clarify what she was talking about. My favorite part was when she spoke a little Sanscript to tell us where some of our English words come from.

I learned a lot of things when the we had the india presentation. 1. The name of Hinduism was changed because at the time, they could not pronounce S. and that it was originally named after the river Sindhu.

2. also Hinduism has no meaning except for the real name Sanatana Dharma...... meaning Eternal Law.

3. Sanskrit is one of the world's oldest versions of languages, and that a lot of english words originated from Sanskrit.

I liked it when we saw the picture she had made because it the guy on it had three heads and it looked cool.

During the Hindu presentation, I learned a few things about India. One thing that I learned was that when it is your birthday you would get a candle and instead of blowing it out you would take in the smoke. I also learned that one of the world's first languages is sanskript. Sanskript is an Indian language, and the speaker said that when you can speak this language you are most likely to be able to speak any other language. Another thing I learned was that Bharrat was India's first name. What I enjoyed during this presentation was that the speaker could speak sanskript and told us how to say hello and goodbye.

================ Alec #1 Miss Shelley:   November 29, 2007 5:06 PMDuring the presentation I learned that:

1. The word Hindu originated from the Sindu River

2. I also learned that the first name for India is Bharrat

================ Zach G. #11 Jordan:   November 29, 2007 7:03 PM

During the very interesting presentation I learned:

1: Knowledge exists all around us in the air and can was absorbed by Indians who then, using the knowledge to create the Veda.

2: The ancient Indian language, sanskrit, is the bases of most languages including English. ex. Father comes from the sanskrit word Patr meaning the same thing.

3:Hinduism, in fact, means nothing in any language, but is what they call one of the Indian religions.

4: India was under British rule for two centuries and changed things around. A: They changed the Sindu River to the Indus River. B: They wrote the history of India and claimed the discoveries and all the good innovations their own.

I enjoyed the presentation and liked every part but I think I enjoyed the part about how Sanskrit was the bases of most languages.

I learned a lot about Hinduism on Monday, for example I didn't know that India was a subcontinent, or that Pakistan was once part of India. What really surprised me is how many words in the English language originated from Sanskrit and how many different words there were that were different from the throat or lips. Also I learned a lot about when England controlled India.
