9 principles shared by Gopi Kallayil, ChiefEvangelist, Brand Marketing at Google
What can
teach us about
innovation?
#1 Innovation
comes from
anywhere!Innovation is in nobody’s job title at Google, but is
everyone’s responsibility.
#2 Focus on the
USER
Create a great user experience and the revenue will takecare of itself.
#3 Think 10X
Thinking how to improve things by 10% would only lead to
incremental change. Radical innovation calls for thinking about how
to improve things by a factor of 10.
#4 Bet on technical
insight
A unique skill set in Innovation is processing the data youalready have in your organization.
#5 Ship and iterate
You may not have perfection in your product, but trust thatyour users will get back to you.
#6 Give employees
20% of time
Google encourages engineers to take 1 day per week to work on
projects they are personally passionate about. A practice that has
proven to truly ignite creativity and innovative spirit.
#7 Default to open
There are seven billion people … the smartest people will always be
outside Google. By defaulting to open, we’re tapping into the
creativity outside of Google.
#8 Fail well
Once we realize a product is not working out, we kill it, but the thing
with products is they morph – we take all the best ideas and redeploy
them.
#9 Have a mission
that matters!
Everyone at Google has a strong sense of mission and purpose. We
believe the work we do has impact on millions of people in a positive
way.
