So what’s changed since I was at school?

Page 9: What are we educating our children for?

If we teach today’sstudents as we taughtyesterday’s, we rob themthe future.

The world is changing around us …. stepping into the knowledge age

FROMfinding/presenting/maste-ring existing knowledge

FROMlearners as passive consumers of knowledge

FROMPrint/text primary mode of representation

TOgenerating newknowledge

TOlearners as active producers of knowledge

TOmulti-modal representation

FROMlearning key facts of discipline

FROMdisciplines separate entities

FROM‘old’ disciplines end in themselves

TOsystems- level understanding

TOrelationships/ connections, comparing and contrasting

TO‘old’ disciplines = resource for generating new knowledge

What we really need to learn…

…The one really competitive skill is the skill ofbeing able to learn. It is the skill of being ablenot to give the right answer to questionsabout what you were taught in school, butto make the right response to situations thatare outside the scope of what you weretaught in school. We need to producepeople who know how to act when they’refaced with situations for which they were notspecifically prepared. (Papert, 1998)

• These skills can equip students to be problem-solvers, inventive thinkers, and adaptive to the fast-paced change they are bound to encounter. In a world of uncertainty, the only constant is the ability to adapt, pivot, and get back on your feet.

• three additional soft skills that can be integrated into the classroom—adaptability, resiliency and grit, and a mindset of continuous learning.

The 6 Essential Fluencies of InnovativeLearning outlines six critical skills necessary forstudents to succeed in the 21st century world. LeeWatanabe Crockett and Andrew Churches assertthat, in order to effectively support modern students, teachers must see their teaching as a response tolearning, rather than seeing learning as an outcomeof teaching. This will require remodelling assessmentpractices to correspond to changes in standards andpedagogy that emphasize inquiry and project-basedlearning. With the essential fluencies as a basis, theauthors provide tools to help educators focus theirinstruction and assessment changes on mindfulnessand feedback for improvement.

Our job as parents…

• Support effort, progress andachievement

• Education is a marathon not asprint – not all children make thesame amount of progress eachyear

• Affirm• Ask questions• And most importantly…give your

time
