What Are Naturopath Practitioners and What Do They Do
The term “naturopath practitioner” may be unfamiliar to many people, but believe me it will soon become almost as commonly known as acupuncture and holistic medicine. Naturopathic medicine promotes health and overall wellness by first identifying unique aspects in each individual patient and then using non toxic remedies and therapies in order to restore their balance – that is the psychological, physiological and structural balance of the person.
Naturopath Practitioners are fully trained and qualified; they are basically doctors who specialize in natural medicines. They abide by these main principles in naturopathic medicine:
1 – Nature has its own healing power. The body has an inbuilt power to restore and maintain health. These practitioners help to speed the process along by removing any obstacles which stand in the way of a cure, identifying treatments which will enhance healing.
2 – Naturopathic medicines focus on identifying and treating the causes of problems instead of just the symptoms of a disease. These causes could be any part of an internal imbalance including a combination of mental, physical and emotional causes. Whereas it is important to treat the symptoms it is equally or even more important to treat the cause.
3 – Using gentle, effective and non-invasive methods which do not have harmful side effects or suppress the symptoms of the disease.
4 – Treat the person as a whole. This holistic approach means that these practitioners are trained to treat the whole person and not just the disease which a person may have. They have the belief that the type of person who has a disease is more important than the type of disease any person may have.
5 – They also work with their patients in order to prevent the reoccurrence of a disease in the future. The thoughts being that it is both easier and cheaper to prevent a person disease than it is to treat a disease. This may include dietary changes, lifestyle changes, nutritional supplementation or any other preventative strategy.
There are a growing number of naturopath practitioners in Australia and many people have benefitted from their knowledge, their wisdom, their advice and their expertise. Naturopathic medicine is not an alternative medicine; it is a way of treating a patient in combination with other, traditional methods whilst trying to find a solution to the health problems of the patient as a whole.
In fact there have been cases where naturopathic physicians have successfully treated chronic illnesses and conditions which were unresponsive to traditional medicines.
