He called it “argu- ably the worst day in USMC avia- tion history since the Tet Offen- sive of 1968.” Eight irreplaceable aircraft were destroyed or put out of action by Taliban warriors dressed in U.S. combat fatigues – amounting to “approximately 7 percent of the total flying USMC Harrier fleet,” Gresham reported. His summary is bone chilling: “A Harrier squadron commander is dead, along with another Ma- rine. Another nine personnel have been wounded, and the nearby Marines at Camp Freedom are now without effective fixed-wing air support. The USMC’s response to this disaster will be a telling report card on its leadership and organizational agility.” On Sept. 21, the left-leaning magazine The Atlantic published an article on the Camp Bastion attack titled “The U.S. Suffered Its Worst Airpower Loss Since Viet- nam Last Week and No One Re- ally Noticed.” A few right-leaning blogs raised troubling questions about preparedness and security. “How did this band of radicals even manage to approach a highly advanced multi-national military base without being detected, much less force their way inside en masse?” asked Kim Zigfeld of the American Thinker. “How were they able to attack so quickly and efficiently that, even though nearly every one of them was killed in the effort, they were able to harm the mighty leathernecks more than they had been in half a century?” National Review’s Jonathan Fore- What about the Camp BastionAttack? man wondered whether Pakistan was behind the attack. “It seems likely that the special forces of a professional army planned the raid, and trained, advised and led the raiders — that is if they did not actually take part in it. Those spe- cial forces would, of course, be those of Pakistan,” Foreman posited. “This may sound shocking, but it would hardly be the first time that Pakistani special forces have oper- ated in Afghanistan on behalf of Islamabad’s allies and proxies.” President Obama has referred callously to the murders of our civilian diplomatic staff in Benghazi as “bumps in the road.” Even more maddening, though, is the radio silence from the White House about what happened that day at Camp Bastion — and what, if anything, Obama’s Pentagon did between the last major attack on Bastion in March and the bloody siege in September. Somehow, a band of 15 insur- gents managed to penetrate the wire with assault rifles, rocket-pro- pelled grenades and other weap- ons on 9/14. Their destruction was of historic proportions. The attack came six months after U.S. De- fense Secretary Leon Panetta was the target of a failed suicide attack attempt at Bastion. The (UK) Sun reported at the time that an Afghani was believed to have made the deliberate attempt on Panetta after “he broke through defenses and drove a vehicle to- wards his aircraft. He then went past the perimeter surrounded by armed security and large concrete block guards. Disaster was only averted when the truck caught fire and crashed into a ditch on the runway close to where Mr. Panetta’s jet had landed or was set to land.” Team Obama mocks GOP presidential candidate Mitt Rom- ney with snarky lines about bayo- nets and binders. The thin-skinned commander in chief exploits Seal Team Six to burnish his “leader- ship” cred. And the president’s campaign surrogates have cease- lessly attacked their critics as “un- patriotic” for questioning this administration’s commitment to national security. But silence is complicity. The questions must be asked: Did po- litically correct rules of engage- ment hamper our troops’ de- fenses? Who knew what and when? Who was behind the at- tackers? And what is being done to ensure our front-line defenders of freedom are able to defend themselves? So we have a rescue force staged in Sigonella. We have the people on the ground beg- ging for help. And we seem to have had an AC-130 gunship in near proximity to the ac- tion. And a decision was made by someone that caused the death of these four men just as surely as any action by a Libyan terrorist: Fox News has learned from sources who were on the ground in Benghazi that an urgent request from the CIA annex for military back-up during the attack on the U.S. consulate and subsequent at- tack several hours later on the annex itself was denied by the CIA chain of command – who also told the CIA operators twice to “stand down” rather than help the ambassador’s team when shots were heard at approximately 9:40 p.m. in Benghazi on Sept. 11. Former Navy SEAL Tyrone Woods was part of a small team who was at the CIA an- nex about a mile from the U.S. consulate where Ambassador Chris Stevens and his team came under attack. When he and others heard the shots fired, they informed their higher-ups at the annex to tell them what they were hearing and requested per- mission to go to the consulate and help out. They were told to “stand down,” according to sources familiar with the exchange. Soon after, they were again told to “stand down.” Woods and at least two oth- ers ignored those orders and made their way to the consu- late which at that point was on fire. Shots were exchanged. The rescue team from the CIA annex evacuated those who remained at the consulate and Sean Smith, who had been killed in the initial attack. They could not find the am- bassador and returned to the CIA annex at about midnight. At that point, they called again for military support and help because they were tak- ing fire at the CIA safe house, or annex. The request was denied. There were no com- munications problems at the annex, according those present at the compound. The team was in constant radio contact with their headquar- ters. In fact, at least one member of the team was on the roof of the annex manning a heavy machine gun when mortars were fired at the CIA com- pound. The security officer had a laser on the target that was firing and repeatedly re- quested back-up support from a Spectre gunship, which is Benghazi [Continued From Page 4A] commonly used by U.S. Spe- cial Operations forces to pro- vide support to Special Op- erations teams on the ground involved in intense firefights. Pay special attention to that last paragraph. The security officer was painting a target with a laser designator. You don’t do that unless the AC- 130 is close enough to acquire the target. Not long after Jennifer Grif- fin filed the report quoted above, CIA Director David Petraeus issued a statement: “No one at any level in the CIA told anybody not to help those in need; claims to the contrary are simply inaccu- rate. ” What it doesn’t say practi- cally screams at the reader. He is clearly saying that some- one denied help but it wasn’t anyone in the CIA. He doesn’t even deny that the CIA passed on the bad news. Now the White House has said it wasn’t them: The White House on Satur- day flatly denied that Presi- dent Barack Obama withheld requests for help from the be- sieged American compound in Benghazi, Libya, as it came under on attack by suspected terrorists on September 11th. “Neither the president nor anyone in the White House denied any requests for assis- tance in Benghazi,” National 5. Because I don’t want Obama appointing the next three justices to the Supreme Court, leaving the definition of my individual rights to speak, write, assemble, prac- tice my religion and bear arms in the hands of a pro-govern- ment, anti-federalism major- ity. 8. Because I don’t want to wait until the full story comes out about what really hap- pened in Libya – well after the election, no doubt – when our only option is impeachment of Obama and installation of Biden as our next president. 9. Because I haven’t heard anything that convinces me it’s possible to climb back up the fiscal cliff once we go ca- reening over it at top speed. 10. The news from Galluphasn’t been very good forBarack Obama over the lastfew weeks. No candidateholding a Gallup polling leadas wide as Mitt Romney’s forseveral weeks in a row, thisclose to the election, has everlost. Granted, that sounds likeone of those political rules thatwill hold true right up until itdoesn’t – the accuracy of vari-ous polls is a topic of muchdiscussion every election sea-son.

But Monday’s Gallup up-date also drops this little ThreeMusketeers bar of dismay intothe President’s trick-or-treatbag: about 15 percent of regis-tered voters nationwide havealready voted early, and MittRomney has a wide leadamong early voters, 52 to 45percent. That closely trackswith his 51-46 lead in the na-tional Gallup poll. Also, aslightly higher percentage ofRomney voters indicated theyhave either already voted, orplan to vote early (2 percentand 1 percent more, respec-tively) and 4 percent moreRepublicans have voted early. The total percentage of earlyvoters is roughly comparableto what it was in 2008.

This is not at all consistentwith the story peddled byObama-friendly media outletsfor the past few weeks. Read-ing from Obama campaignpress releases, they’ve beeninsisting Obama has a big leadamong early voters, and amassive surge of early voteshas been flooding in. There’s

a very specific reason for push-ing that narrative: it’s sup-posed to offset the despairamong Obama’s base as theywatch the best national poll-ing outfits track a powerfulshift of momentum inRomney’s favor, giving him asolid lead. Democrats aremeant to be heartened by thenotion that their candidate al-ready has a big “secret lead”tucked into his electoral bank, thanks to early voting.

In reality, there are aboutas many early voters as lasttime, and nationally they ap-pear to favor Romney. At theswing state level, BloombergNews claims Democrat earlyvoting leads in Iowa and Ne-vada, while Republicans areahead in Colorado. The pic-ture is said to be “moremuddled in the bigger swingstates of Ohio and Florida,”although a Time poll gaveDemocrats an early votinglead in Ohio.

Bloomberg’s assertion of aDemocrat lead in Iowa isbased primarily on the claimsof Obama campaign managerDavid Axelrod, and the as-sessment of a professor fromGeorge Mason University, al-though the actual numberscited in the article for Iowa are44.6 percent Democrat, 32 per-cent Republican, and 23.3 per-cent independent. Romneyleads by anywhere from 8 to15 points among independentvoters in most polls. Thatwould make the Iowa early-voting edge for Democratsthin at best. The Bloombergarticle is nevertheless entitled“Democrats Hold Early-Vot-ing Advantage Over Republi-cans.”
