Health Tip From Our Parish Nurses: GENETIC REACTION TO STRESS MAY EXPLAIN MANY HEART ATTACKS
“ This is an interesting finding that highlights several features of why some people develop heart attacks and others do not. Currently, we have many medications that we can use to prevent heart attacks, such as drugs to prevent blood clots, lower blood pressure, and reduce cholesterol. However some patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) still go on to develop heart attacks despite our best medical therapy. So, what else can be done? This recent work suggests that certain individuals have a negative response to emotional stresses that predispose them to a heightened risk of heart attacks. Although these findings are preliminary, they suggest that treatments designed to reduce the body’s response to stress may reduce the risk of heart attacks. Additionally, we may find soon that genetic testing to identify certain individuals who respond negatively to stress may be a powerful strategy to tailor stress-reducing therapies and to prevent heart attacks.” -Deepak Voora, MD Duke Medicine Health News, Vol 14 G
