Division One Review

The end of the ADASL season inthe First Division looks as if it willbe a "photofinish" with only 4points separating the 3 teams at thetop of the league table. In that league table as it stands atprint time of this publication,Melchester Wings leads the packon 34 points having played 14 of16 matches. G Tech FC are rightbehind them on 32 points after 14games and Inkhead.com occupythird with 30 points having played13 games.Adding to the drama is that G TechFC will actually be bothMelchester Wings andInkhead.com within the final 3scheduled games of the season.Melchester and G Tech FC bothhave destiny in their own hands. Ifthey both win out, they will bechampions of the league.Inkhead.com will need to win outand also hope that Melchester droppoints before they can have achance at title glory. It's nail bitingstuff for the clubs and those thatsupport them.Note: Majestic will end the seasonin 4th after already being awardeda forfeit victory before matchdayeven arrives as FC Ljiljin will notfield a team forSunday's game.

A Three HorseRace in D1

At the bottom of division one,the battle for survival has beenwon by Nuesoft FC as they lastweek defeated cellar dwellers,AC Majestic, by the score of 61. This will end a miserable 1stdivision campaign for ACMajestic and will resign them toDivision 2 play next year.Nuesoft go into the weekend on8 points safe and from the 4 ptsAC Majestic are sitting on goinginto a weekend when they playleague leaders MelchesterWings.FC Ljiljan were the otherdisappointment this year from ateam that won the Perrin Cupand finished 3rd in the league, tofighting relegation most of theyear and not even fielding ateam for the final league fixture.Much for that club to thinkabout in the off season. More onthat and Sting Gold and FCBrookhaven next week!

This coming ADASL off season,WFN will be working with the topamateur football leagues in the areato revive a form of the AmateurChampions League for the top 3teams in Division 1 to participate. We hope to contribute to thecreation of a competition that willprovide additional incentives forteams playing in Division One toaim for.Through sponsorship andadvertising promotions, it is ourhope to provide a monatary ormaterial prize for the participantsas well as sponsored registrationand insurance. We look forward to any feedback, suggestions or questions about thisproposal from any inrested party.Just send your inquery [email protected] the meantime, we will extendthe ADASL weekly publication ona limited basis in the offseason totrack the proposal's progress.

G Tech FC goalkeeper, Matthew Sutton has been solid allyear long for the club. Against FC Brookhaven hiscommand of the area was a major factor in keeping thethreat on goal at a low level on balance of the match.

Overall a very entertaining match for the neutral. Brookhave were lively inattack but Tech equal to the task in their defense in the final 3rd and theirown attack. It's setting up to be an exciting end to the season.

Focus Match Review:

Georgia Tech FC continues its challenge for a firstever Division One title with a comprehensive 51victory over FC Brookhaven at their home atSouthern Poly Stte University. A brace from RileySumpter added to goals from Don Pottinger,Spenser Sumpter and Pat Murray. The final scoreline did not tell the entire story andthe play on the field was a lot closer than it mightappear. FC Brookhaven possess a solid squad andthe leagues Third leading scorer in former CreswellFC (now known as Inkhead) player, Nick Corley.Such was the injury and player availably issues forBrookhaven that Corley actually started the game ingoal for the club. Despite this, Brookhaven did havemoment in the game where they could have takenadvantage and progress, but failed to take theinitiative.

Tech ended up being the club that took advantageby converting their early chances and makingBrookhaven chase the game. Brookhaven had noanswer for the creative play of playmaker PatrickMurray and the finishing of Riley Sumpter and withthe early lead by Tech, it was always going to be anuphill battle for the midtable FC Brookhaven.A great result for Tech as it confirms that theirleague title race is still and truely alive andbasically in their hands if they win out the 3remaining games they have scheduled. Tech arealso in the unique position to grab what we call"The Double" if they progress and win the PerrinCup title as the did 2 seasons ago. It's all still toplay for in the final games to come.

A Home GrownTeam Closes Doors

Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves is an American soccer team based in Atlanta,Georgia, United States but plays it's football in Doraville, Georgia atSilverbacks Park. The team was founded in 2007 before which they were knownas Atlanta FC. The team is a member of the National Premier Soccer League(NPSL) which is a highlevel national amateur league designated as the fourthtier of the American Association Football Pyramid, in the Southeast Division.WFN is sad to report that the AtlantaSilverbacks Reserves team will not play in theyear 2013. No reason was given by teamofficials but the announcement was made a fewweeks ago on the Atlanta Silverbacks Franchisewebsite and life has moved on without them. It'sanother chapter of another failing team to goalong with the many others in recent years inthe region. But did anyone notice? The structure of football in general has alwaysbeen a problem in the United States because thefoundation on the game here is built on a systemunlike any used by anyone else in the world.Unfortunately, this system includes teams left totheir own devices and when they fail, they failhard as in this case.

There is a report and speculation that the"hiatus" is temporary and the team will returnfor the 2014 season. Having said that, whateffect will missing the 2013 season have foraspiring players who can't afford to take a yearoff and does it mean anything to fans of theteam? The answer to the question is complicatedbecause the youth system in the Unites Statesmakes it very difficult for the serious player tofind enough training, coaching and games toplay in order to reach full potential of theirplaying skills. This in part because the "system"in the United States generally runs along anexclusive path and is beyond the reach of many

Page 13: WFN's ADASL Weekly - March 17 2013

without the material means tofirst enter an elite youth club andthen to be seen by clubs in thelottery of tryouts, combines andlimited scouting.Add to this that lower leagues inthe United States are poorlysupporter both by fans of thegame and by franchises in higherleagues. Even the ADASL is onit's own as far as financing, sponsorship, coaching and playerdevelopment. So where do the players who hadthe prospect to play in theReserves squad go during thistime of hiatus? The answer issimple and brutal but they are ontheir own. We would hope theywould see the value in spendingthe time in a top level amateurteam in the ADASL's 1stdivision, but that also is agamble. There is no realguarantee that teams in theADASL (regardless of howattractive the league is) will givethe player the time, coaching, training and contacts needed toprogress to the professionalranks.

There are precious few placesfor the serious and ambitiousplayer in the region to go thisyear without actually leaving thecountry. Even abraod they areoutsiders and it would be adifficult task to break in a placethat actually has supported andintegrated youth systems. On the other hand, recreationallythere are many choices as thecountry is glutted with "rec"leagues of all types, sizes andquality. Unfortunately, this is notof much use to the type of playerthat wants to play professionally. The couaching and training inthese types of leagues isinadequate and many times nonexistent. From a business standpoint, itmay make sense to the teamofficials to take a year off. As wementioned, without fan supportand material support from theSilverbacks Pro Team, the pointof going through a season withno resources or fan support justdidn't seem logical. Withattention only focused on the

Pro level teams, one wonderswhy fans and supporters of thegame do not care for whatshould come first and that's thegrassroots and youthdevelopment of the game. Tocast away the a club for a year aseasily and as quietly as has beendone in many cases around theleague, one wonders if thesupporters actually care aboutthe game outside of pro and thefun recreational leagues.Though the region has anunbelievable amount of"potential" talent, only time willtell if we will ever start to payattention to this talent and give itthe attention it needs from acoaching, training and fansupport point of view. Until then, these players likely will continueto be ignored and have to workout their developments in asolitary environment.
