40thAnniversaryPlanning for the Future while we Celebrate past success

Dear wetlands friends and supporters,

Happy New Year! Thank you to everyone who supported The Wetlands Conservancy through our year-end appeal. Your support ensures we are able to continue to conserve, advocate and defend wetlands across the region.

We are so excited for 2021 here at The Wetlands Conservancy, because we are turning 40! And we are planning to celebrate all year long. We are currently working on a slate of activities and events that will invite you to celebrate with us and help us define the next 40 years. There is much work to do when it comes to wetlands conservation, and we are grateful for your support as we tackle some of the important environmental issues facing our community. Look for our 40th Anniversary announcement on February 2nd, World Wetlands Day!

All the best,

KATIE RYAN, Executive Director

Support January 1 - December 31, 2020To show our gratitude for your support we have listed

all the individuals that have given their money, goods

and services. Our partnerships enable us to increase our

capacity and impact. We are honored to showcase all of

our collaborators from 2020.

Thank you for all the ways you contributed to

The Wetlands Conservancy.

The Wetlands Conservancy was founded through the early efforts of Althea Pratt and Jack Broome. Their passion attracted community members, students and volunteers to the cause. First preserves included Hedges Creek Marsh and Apache Bluff in Tualatin

In the 1990s, The Wetlands Conservancy’s first thirteen preserves protected urban wetlands in the Portland metro area.●

Our partnerships expanded our reach to the coast, with stewardship of preserves in Arch Cape, Manzanita, Neskowin, and Beaver Creek.

In 2010, our coastal estuary site was designated as the Beaver Creek Natural Area, in partnership with Oregon State Parks.

In 2013, restoration begins on Yaquina River’s Poole Slough, to improve habitats and provide shelter for native migratory fish.

In 2000, The Wetlands Conservancy launches The Greatest Wetlands Project to compile a comprehensive database on Oregon wetlands.

Beginning in 2004, restoration on our Matson Creek Preserve on Coos Bay, replaced failing historic tidegates for full connectivity wth the lower valley.

Since 2015, our community scientist volunteers have are trained on techniques to survey beaver activity, and amphibian egg masses.

We continue to build relationships with Indigenous Tribes and are learning traditional land stewardship practices.

American Wetlands Month 2020 Photo Contest Winners

Just after the pandemic hit, The Wetlands Conservancy connected with supporters to encourage them to stay safe outdoors taking photos, either in their neighborhood, or out in nature.

This was the 5th year of our annual American Wetlands Month photo contest. Their images brightened our days in May, and winning photos are featured in this newsletter. Enjoy!
