This month WPW presents New Horizon ProWrestling, Pro Wrestling Ignition and Australasian

Wrestling Federations Son of Anarchy, DaxonKage.

Six months ago, I had what many believed to bemy last wrestling match in WA. It would be the lasttime I would ever get a real break in the sport.

Sadly, it never happened then. By December, Ithought I had had enough; until I gave it one morechance in Adelaide. By that time, the Son of

Anarchy was born, and a renewed sense ofpurpose came to me in the sport: To cause chaos

and mayhem for all to see. With my successes inPWI (Adelaide) and AWF (Melbourne, Sydney andPerth), I knew it was time to come back home.

Im letting Anarchy run loose here in Perth;having wrestled greats such as Joel Bateman, PaulThornton, Space boy Dacey, Percy T, Jarrad Slateetc. Learning so much and gaining newopportunities, Ive never felt better. Its been a funsix months, debuting against Dante Slade in SA,competing in three Supanova events this year andeven getting a shot at becoming the first ICWTitanium Champion, all I can say is that its fullspeed ahead from here.

Hold on. Im trailing off the original subject. Forthose who are unaware, this marks the one yearanniversary of Westside Pro Wrestling. And what a

joyous contribution by those who wish to spreadthe word of Professional Wrestling in this greatstate and country. Despite those who may notappreciate their efforts, its a damn good jobgentlemen.

As for myself, Ill have New Horizon in my sitesand well as ICW and PWI in the next few months. One year down, many more to come. Justremember three things world: Westside Pro rules,Wrestling rules and most importantly, ANARCHY

    RULES.

    EXTRA EDITORIAL

I cant believe it has been 12 months already sinceI first came up with the idea for Westside ProWrestling. The first issue was started on August 22,2009 when I had been inspired to finally start thenewsletter. The original seed for the idea began

back in 2004 when I worked on an unreleased EPWAlmanac.Doing the newsletter hasnt always been easy but

the support I have received from the promotions, wrestlers and fans alike throughout Australia and

the World has made it worthwhile keeping WPWgoing and has mostly been a great experience.

I would like to especially thank Explosive ProWrestling, New Horizon Pro Wrestling andSouthern Hemisphere Wrestling Alliance for their

continued support. I would also like to thank thosewho have been happy to be affiliated with WPW.W*ING Fans, Alliance-Wrestling, The Indy Showand australianprowrestling.com

JURAH PUTS A STOP TO BREWING

    STORM

    Screen Capture: Explosive Pro Wrestling

Davis Storms hopes to become EPW Championwere dashed when Jamie Jurah refuse to wrestleStorm atHell or Highwater, as he was not thenumber one contender. Board of Directors member,Brett Corvus, came out and said although Jurah didnot have to defend his title against Storm he wouldhave to compete.

Corvus proceeded to make Storm the referee forJurahs title defense, which would be against JayTaylor. The main event saw Jurah retain after a 20minute plus battle, when Taylor had thought he hadwon the title, the champion struck him with the beltwhile Storm was arguing with outside official Matt

Smarkson. The Ironman reluctantly made the threecount after Jurah had punt kicked Taylor twice and

then got a small measure of revenge on thechampion hitting the Eye of the Storm.

Taylor in a daze proceeded to hit Storm with acutter, thinking it was Jurah. The next showTelethon Bash on August 14 will feature atournament to crown a new number one contender, with the winner getting his shot against whoever isthe champion at Re-Awakening 9. The QuarterFinal matches have been named with Storm vs.

Taylor, Mikey Nicholls vs. Bobby Marshall, ShaneHaste vs. Sebastian Sander and a Battle Royale.

eliminated by Wimbledon. Most EPW fans hadbeen tipping either the champions to retain or thatthe third team of The Diamonds in the Rough,Damian Slater and AZ Vegara would win.

This is Wimbledons second time as a EPW TagTeam Champion after a three month reign in early

2008 as part of the European Union, while this isVices first title of any kind. Nicholls, Haste andSlater made an appearance on Channel 10s The7pm Project promoting the show the night before.

SHOTGUN GOES OFFShotgun Tyler Jacobs frustrated after beingeliminated from the Invitational Tournamentsnapped and brutally attacked current HardcoreShield holder, Chase Griffin after the three wayElimination Match atHell or Highwater. Theveteran Jacobs proceeded to destroy the shield andwas dragged away by EPW officials screaming thatGriffin wasnt hardcore. This leaves a questionas to what EPW are doing with the title now it has

    been destroyed.

    BRAD WEST RETURNS

The leader of Team Allstar, Brad West returnedafter a eight month absence atHell or Highwater.Last seen being dragged out of EPW, afterSebastian Sander lost to Ferguson Block atRe-

Awakening 8, West snuck into the ring and hit RickSanders with the Yuranagi bomb, after TheBlackest Hours DQ loss against Alex Kingstonand Adam Banks. Team Allstar are now at fullstrength to continue their war against The Blackest

    Hour.

SCHMIDT TIMESGorgeous Garry Schmidt was the focal point of atwo page article in the Sunday Times on July 11.The article When the day jobs a wrestle, focusedon the man behind the character, Michael Smith. The article also had little tidbits of information onother EPW talent. Yes. Welcome to Wraiths World. This is my little section and if you don't like itwell stiff, someone was stupid enough to givethis space of a couple words for me to vent... butyour lucky it's only bi-monthly so you only have to

put up with it well.... bi-monthly (which is far lessthan issues of Deadpool come out [That's an idea?!Maybe I could do a team up issue? The Wraithteaming up with Percy T.?!]

NowJarrad Slate is the SHWA champion, andwe shall celebrate. We will destroy anyone thatstands in our way. But. If the time comes for me (orPain for that matter), to get my hands on the belt,Jarrad will need to understand that what he holds,is the very most important thing to us, and we willnot hold back.

Shedding some light on the last couple ofeventsMr. Mass charity shot at the title. Nowtheres a charity case if I ever saw one. Pathetic.

I also single handily took down Black Sabbath,oh wait Zak Sabbath...Wait he was just called Zak

Sab to avoid confusion...Anyhow, I took him downand dragged the South Australian name down withit. WA won so ner-nerI mean we now hold

bragging rights! And they have little more thanwounded pride to take home with them (and maybean STD? Im just joking!!! Sheeesh!!)

Let us be real now, it was a hard fought battle. It was strange to fight some one with a similarmove set. Zak and I both do a running high kneeand finish with a DDT. Two warriors who havenever met and separated by a huge expanse of landshare a similar sense of battle, yet are completelydifferent wrestlers. I applaud thee. And this is how

it went downAn epic battle, much like Zarbon vs. Vegeta inthe Freiza saga. It was back and forth for both of

us, trying to use our finishers early in the match(Zak with the Sabbaths End and myself with theHeavens Door).

With the treacherous crowd behind him, he foughtback and managed to catch me off guard. Up hewent, hit me with his frog splash (well I think thats

what he was doing cause he yelled FROGGYloud enough to wake me from my daze).

I quickly got to my feet and nailed him with ajumping shoten...

Zak was dazed and I quickly capitalized with asuperplex. But Alas!

He fought back and knocked me down into theTree of Woe...

He stepped on my knee I tried to sit up and fightback but he nailed his patented knee drop!!! (Ishoulda seen it coming I did research his moveson YouTube).

So with my chest burning from his machine gun

like chops and his huge knee drop, I was out of itlying on my back staring at the lights wonderingwhy exactly any of us do this. Then Klaus jumpedon the apron to my aide me and lent over the toprope where Zak was perched, ready to fly with aFrog splash. Zak must of slipped (with a little helpfrom Klaus) and crutched himself Ouch!!

No time like the present! So with the last of myenergy, I managed the IMPACT HEAVENSDOOR (spike DDT with the legs still resting on theturnbuckle but I'll call it want I want). Then, later on in the rumble he was a little chokedup about my win, so he targeted me! What did I

ever do to the green wearing lad from SA???Well, revenge is a dish served cold and I got my

revenge. But he kick you off the apron and you were

eliminated by him you ask.Oh but hes going back to the city of churches

(Adelaide for those who are geographicallychallenged) to pray he never has to face me again!

You may have also seen Slate on Hey Hey It'sSaturday (on Wednesday lol!) along with TNT ( I

wrestled that guy on the Saturday) be out-smartedby some cheesy channel 9 girl and a dude in aPlucka Duck suit (I swear its not the real PluckaDuck!!) Oh and I got to high-five Mange andKabel, Brothers of Apocalypse as they did a victorylap (dance?) giving cheerful hand slaps to the fans.

Confused? yes kiddies, at Supanova anything canhappen.

But what about my match you ask? Well we wererobbed of our victory. Thats all I shall say.

Now my fave match of the Supanova weekendwas the 5-man Cluster, the last match of it all. JakeParagon, Daxon Kage, Jimmy Jamal Jenkins,Avalanche and Elliott Forbes with the feel of thematch that I think sums up the weekend of crazyrandomness which is the annual geek gathering.Jimmy Jamal stole the match though with hisdancing hijinks (Damn that dancing fiend).

As well as wrestling, some of the SHWA roster

entered into the KAMEHAMEHA competition, myself included. Jimmy Jamal went out in the firstround. Ash Lighting made it to the qualifyingrounds but was knocked out by a girl. Myself? Imade it to the semi final but was robbed by a kid ina Uahara Hat (is it because he was Asian?). Maybeit was the hat, maybe he unleashed his bunki, but itwas close and as I walked away, my wife looks atme disappointed and says..."You should have

    powered up."

    Westside Pro Wrestling Page 13

Rohan Herbstreit has become one of the mostrespected non-wrestling workers on the Australian

scene. For over a decade he has worked behind the

scenes for various promotions as a promoter, booker, commentator and manager as well asrunning the wrestling.net.au website. WPWs Tez

gets Rohans thoughts on the scene around thecountry, whats in the works for WrestleClash andmore.

    Photo: Rohan Herbstreit

WPW: You stared the website WWF Down

Under in the late 90s, which eventually

morphed into WNA, the main wrestling website

in the country. Did you ever expect the site to

become as big as it did?ROHAN: Not really to be honest, I started the sitein 1997 as a uni project and I wasnt that smartabout pro-wrestling at that time, but I have a

passion for it, and pretty much every day for 10years spent at least an hour updating it toeventually it became more than a hobby and an

actual business for me. It really has only started tobecome profitable over the last 3 years.

WPW: Were you a fan of the Australian scene

pre-WWF Down Under or was the website how

    you got into the scene?

ROHAN: No I wasnt, I kind of knew it existed butonly thought there were one or two promotions, and mainly old guys. The website was how I gotinvolved in the scene. We were lining up to meetShawn Michaels when he toured here in 1998 andone of the local commentators gave me his

business card. Alongside WWF Down Under I wasalso running a wrestling radio program at the time,so we had the commentators on the radio show andthey invited us down to the show so I attended my

first local show in December 1998. It was a yearlater that I started to help out with lighting andsetting up the ring, anything I could do to get

involved. Then I started ring announcing, thencommentating and eventually helped book theshows. That was all over a 2 year period and Iloved every minute of it. I think to date I have

pretty much done every role on a show apart fromworking the canteen!

WPW: What do you think are the best and

    worst things about Australian Wrestling?

ROHAN: Firstly I have completely removed theterm Australian Wrestling out of my vocabulary

because I refuse to be put under an umbrella withsome of the people currently promoting and who

are supposedly in the same business I have workedin and out of for the last 11 years. And I think itdestroys any hope you have of marketing yourselfas a company if you are put in a box with those

people who have no idea what professionalwrestling is in 2010.

To answer your question, the best thing about thescene in this country is entertaining fans, becausethere are so many people who dont know that live

professional wrestling even exists so when they goto a good quality show and actually enjoythemselves then you know you are a part ofsomething that actually works. Whether you are a

wrestler, or ring announcer or selling hotdogs, everyone is part of that team and product. Therereally isnt anything like it, and its whateveryones goal should be, every show.

Worst things, well thats an endless list, I thinkobviously some things will never change and thats

just the nature of the beast. Everyone has theiropinion of what wrestling is and quite frankly can

promote anyway they wish. I think the fact thatanyone really can buy a ring, purchase a businessname and call themselves a promotion is one of theworst things, if not the very worst as there is nocontrol or body that is looking after the industry.

WPW: What is your opinion on the West

    Australian scene?

ROHAN: Any opinion of mine is going to bebiased to be honest with you, 90% of the stuff Ihave seen is EPW, but I really believe EPW haveset the standard and benchmark for pretty much theentire country now. Whether it be production or in-ring, they have stepped up and said here we are,now where are you? - and its up to everyone elsenow to play catch up!

But going back to your question, just readingWPW I was surprised to see so much activity

taking place in the west and I do read a lot of theforums and see the various websites and YouTube

    14/25

    Westside Pro Wrestling Page 14

clips. I think too many people are taking shortcutsin WA to try and play catch up by promotingUSA talent, and then not delivering and somehowtrying to speed up the process of evolution by

bringing in talent from overseas before you evenhave a show with talent that can work and a show

that actually draws!I mean seriously, if you cant draw more than 200

people then you shouldnt be flying in indy guysfrom the USA for gods sake, do you honestlythink you can make any money or somehow tripleyour crowd by using guys like Balls Mahoney? You cant buy credibility or respect, there is noindy guy in the world who can bring that, so just by

booking them your promotion is all of a suddenmore respected. Its not going to happen.

Every state is similar in the sense that there arealways going to be multiple promotions around, butI think WA is such a small state and there are too

many people promoting, and promoting bad stufftoo, cause its really easy to edit down a 2 hourshow into 3 mins of highlights, add some musicand whack it on YouTube and say here we are, when in actual fact you have lied to the audience. You know if they come to the shows they wontsee 3 mins of highlights, they are going to seecomplete rubbish by people who are notexperienced enough or mature enough to do the

proper training, travel and be taught by those in theindustry who can actually teach you and matureyou into a capable performer instead of someonewho copies a move seen on DVD and is trained by

someone who has been in the business five minuteswho is probably charging you for the privilege!

WPW: Who are your some of your current

favourite workers on the Australian scene?

ROHAN: I really enjoy watching Shane Haste Ithink he has come a long way and really steppedup, and seems to get even better every time I seehim, its almost scary how good he is and I reallywish him well. Perth has some real good youngtalent, Mikey Nicholls, Bobby Marshall all really

believable guys and just so crisp in-ring.In other states I think Damian Slater in Adelaide

is fantastic to watch and is getting better in terms ofhis character development and crowd connection, once he has that down he will be the guy to lookout for because he almost has it. In Melbourneyou really cant go past Slex for pure athleticability in ring that isnt matched, its like he is on adifferent level to everyone else. I saw an amazingmatch with some young guys in Sydney a monthago - Robbie Eagles and Matt Diamond, they aretwo guys to look out for, sensational performers inevery sense of the word. We have some good talentin this country, we really do.

WPW: In 2008 you promoted the first

    WrestleClash, which is becoming Australias

WrestleMania. Was it difficult to get it up and

running, and is it now easier with the success of

    it getting the talent together?

ROHAN: The first show was difficult, last years

show was much easier but we got hit withpromoting and losing some valuable media due tothe Hulk Hogan show on the week before. Thething is now its really not an issue getting talent, Icould honestly book a dream card type show in 5mins, and I reckon within a week I could get veryclose to everyone on board. The issue is more sothe venue and promoting in Victoria at the moment.

The Victorian scene is a complete and utter mess, and almost embarrassing. Its really bad, and yougo to a venue or go to a newspaper over here andsay wrestling and its almost a dirty word now, they dont want to know you. And I can sit and

point fingers and blame people, but really it wouldbe up to myself to step up and make a difference ifI really wanted to. But dedicating enough time andresources at the moment for me personally is hard.We would really need to get a good team togetherto make a difference here in Melbourne, I think wehave the right people, most are sitting at home nolonger involved and thats a shame.

WPW: Can you mention anything in regards to

plans for WrestleClash III?ROHAN: Nothing yet, as I mentioned before it isdifficult at the moment. Benny English whocurrently promotes Warzone in Melbourne co-

promoted WrestleClash 2 with me, and we haveloosely been discussing concepts for Clash 3 but

nothing is set in stone. I know there are plenty ofpeople who want to see it, and so many workerswho would like on, I get asked almost weekly now.We will see what happens, stay tuned!

    Photo: Rohan Herbstreit

WPW: You were part of a group, who left

WrestleRock in 2009. Why did you leave what

was seemingly a successful promotion and was

what you learned at WrestleRock key to you

wanting to create WrestleClash?ROHAN: Actually I left to work exclusively onWrestleClash 2 at the time. I had put everything Ihad into WrestleRock and getting that off theground in 2005. From putting up posters to settingup the ring, I really worked on every aspect of itand put in so much time and effort. I am really

proud of everything that was achieved. When you have a guy like Slex coming out of the

crowd in Perth wearing a WrestleRock T-Shirt andeven without anything being said on mic people inthe crowd knowing who he is and whatWrestleRock is then you know you are ontosomething, and I cant help feel that there was alost opportunity there which still upsets me to thisday.

So I felt I the need to move on as it wasnt myvision, the promoters are personal friends of mineand I told them if I walked away and didnt thinkthey could continue without me then I wouldntwalk. But they have managed to keep going and Ireally hope they can step up and get that show backon track and promoting regularly because I reallyfelt at one point in time that it was the hottest showin the country.

I promoted before working for WrestleRockrunning All Star Wrestling at Crown Casino inMelbourne, I had basic skills but at the time therewasnt much talent around. Now we have the talent

which I saw come through as I was working withWrestleRock so that really made me want to seesome of the best of the best around and helped

    create the WrestleClash concept.

    WPW: Website Creator, Promoter, Behind-the-

scenes. Which do you prefer doing the most?ROHAN: Probably behind the scenes orcommentary, I have commentated more shows thisyear than I have in the past 5 years and forgot howmuch I enjoy it. But definitely behind the scenesfor me, when you have a show like WrestleClashwith so much great talent, you honestly dont needto micro manage as much as I would do a normalshow because the talent are that good and youknow they will deliver so it doesnt stress you outas much.

I used to do all the running sheets forWrestleRock and some shows were like nine pageslong (mainly for all the Audio/Video queues, musicetc). But WrestleClash was like 4 pages, a breeze, and I enjoy working with good talent, guys likeKrackerJak, Slex and Carlo Cannon are so

passionate and so entertaining, you know you cantrust them and they will always deliver.

WPW: When the Wrestling Pit and No Holds

Barred websites closed down, WNA was the

only place where Australian wrestling could be

talked about. Now over the past eighteen

months or so Wrestle Hustle, The Indy Show

and Australian Pro Wrestling have started.

What do you think of the new websites and

podcasts that are starting up promoting the

Australian scene?ROHAN: Good actually, I dont really have a

problem with any of those sites to be honest. Ilistened to the Indy Show podcast the other week

based out of Sydney and didnt really enjoy ithowever, but they had some good interviews and Ithink Marek does a good job at Wrestle Hustle, Iam all for new sites popping up. I just wish theywould look at promotions first and ask some simplequestions before they promote them online.

WPW: Where do you see Australian Wrestling

    heading?

ROHAN: I think the next step would be gettingcontent onto a media platform of some sort, a free

to air Digital Network would be nice, mobile, orpossibly over the net with PPV type streaming, orthrough a DVD distributor. I have no idea why

people dont push their DVDs online whencompanies in the US have basically lived off DVDdistribution as a revenue source for years.

AWF are taking over IWAs show on Aurora onPay TV but the channel doesnt have enough reach,IWA have been on for years and they didnt reallyrevolutionise the business, and from what I haveseen of AWF recently they really dont have thetalent to pull it off either unfortunately. I think thewhole community TV, Channel 31, Aurora thing is

done, we need to find new ways of getting thevarious products out to the masses because payingto get onto Community TV isnt going to cut it in

2010.I think we have some really good talent in this

country and thats not the issue. But we are also letdown by people who shouldnt be promoting and

people who shouldnt be wrestling, and when thelevel of performance is set, if you are so far under

that level set then you should stop.Im not saying we all have to be putting on shows

featuring six 5 star matches, Im saying if you cantcompete at a certain level then you should stop. Ifyou want it to be a social thing or you love the

business and want to make it and live the dreamand all that, then fine but there are plenty of jobs inwrestling that dont involve bumping, and we could

use all the support we can get in terms ofpromoting online, producing talent, sellingmerchandise, marketing and basic businessfundamentals like sponsorship or running a

profitable show, that I cant understand those wholive in their own little bubble and cant see they are

    not helping anyone!

WPW: Thank you for speaking to WPW Rohan.ROHAN: Its a pleasure, I enjoying reading whatsgoing on and admire your passion and dedication,if only we could clone people as I think WA hassome real good people working behind the scenesand promoting something we all enjoy. Lets hopewe can all step up and really make something of it

    before its too late.

One half of the voices of Explosive Pro Wrestling, and the 2009 WPW Commentator of the Year,Mean Dean Olsen brings WPW all the latest on theEPW scene.

Welcome to the Mean Scene, for this month Idlike to take a look at the current situation involvingJamie Jurah and the Explosive Pro Wrestlingchampionship. When Jamie returned to EPW aftera long hiatus which included back surgery, he onlyhad one thing on his mind, winning the EPWChampionship. Once he was back and had RickSanders helping him along the way, we saw theJamie of old, having many great matches andeverything seemed well. Then atEvolution 2009,the night Jamie finally got himself a shot at the

title, he was denied of his opportunity when hisclose friend Rick Sanders turned on him, and sided

with his opponent Richter that night forming what

has become The Blackest Hour. Jamie didnt losesight of his one true goal in EPW, despite thismajor setback he kept aiming for the top and nevergave up in trying to finally get the gold.

    Photo: Explosive Pro Wrestling

Eventually after many hard fought match ups,Jamie got himself another shot at thechampionship, at Goldrush 3. On that night Jurahwas up against the man who previously stoppedhim from getting the title, as well as the army that

was behind him the Blackest Hour. Much like wehad seen throughout the career of the master of theJurahverse, he defied all the odds by finally putting

  • 8/8/2019 Westside Pro Wrestling - Issue 12 - August 2010

    17/25

    Westside Pro Wrestling Page 17

a stop to the stranglehold Richter had on the EPWchampionship. Jamie Jurah was the new ExplosivePro Wrestling champion, something he had trainedand fought so hard for, for so many years. Myselfand everyone else was looking forward to new erain EPW with a fighting champion, who would carry

the title with honor. As soon as the match had beenwon, Davis Storm made his way to the ring andannounced himself as the first challenger for title,

both men shook hands as we all looked forward towhat would surely be a fantastic battle for the gold.

AtEvolution 2010, Jamie Jurah who had realisedhis dream becoming the EPW champion now hadto defend his title for the first time against a toughopponent, the Iron Man Davis Storm. The matchstarted off in great way, both men trading movesand holds as we all were treated to a fantasticwrestling match. Jamie has always said hes not the

biggest or strongest wrestler around but he has the

brains, and he came into this match with a gameplan, Jamie started to viciously aim his offence tothe Iron Mans leg. The way Jamie was attackingStorm was unlike we had previously seen, Jurahhad a defined mean steak in the way he wasworking over Storms leg and knee. Davismanaged to hurt Jurahs shoulder in this match andthen we saw Jamie completely shift gears. It

became clear that Jamie was not too concernedwith winning the contest, but just wanted to leavewith the title. Jamie began using every short cut inthe book, using the ring posts and anything hecould to try and injure Storm, doing anything he

could to escape with the belt. In the end the timelimit for the match had expired, Jamie had retainedthe title, but Storm and the EPW fans werenthappy, everyone was chanting for 5 moreminutes, Jurah wanted no part of it, and told theaudience, he had fulfilled his contractualobligations to EPW, and did not need to wrestle foranother 5 minutes, and left with his championship.

    Photo: Explosive Pro Wrestling

This was unlike what any of us expected of JamieJurah, we all thought hed be a fighting champion,he had always been a competitor whod never backdown, but it seemed now Jamie didnt care as longas the got to keep his title. Brett Corvus and theEPW board of directors were not happy with the

events of Evolution and announced a rematch forthe title between Storm & Jurah to take place atHell or Highwater 2010.

Previously I had mentioned about Jamies abilityto use his brain and on the night of the rematchJamie showed everyone just how smart he really is.He came out and announced that his contact as achampion stated that he only had to defend againstthe number one contender and that was not DavisStorm. JT had won a number one contendershipmatch at evolution, so Brett Corvus said Jamiewould defend against him and not Storm. BrettCorvus and Storm were not impressed but Jamie

had outsmarted them. Not to let Jamie get awaywith his cunning dodge of the original match,Corvus announced that Davis Storm would bespecial guest referee for the contest.

From the beginning of the match it was apparentnothing had changed from the previous month, allJurah wanted to do was leave with the title. Anychance Jamie got hed try to walk away, getcounted out or disqualified, taking the easy wayout, not even wanting to compete, he didnt careabout the honor of the championship, he wanted itfor himself. To prevent Jurah using the championsadvantage of getting DQd and keeping his title

Storm made the match no disqualification and nocount out. Jamie was not happy, but again tookevery short cut he could using low blows and allsorts of dirty tactics. JT fought a fantastic match up

but in the end, after all the punishment he hadtaken, it was two punt style kicks to the head that

put JT down for the three count. Jurah had retainedin another match where he desperately tried toavoid wrestling a fair match, Davis stormed letJamie know he was finished with him by nailinghim with the eye of the storm.

Its a tough time in EPW at the moment, as wehave a champion who is so content with keeping

the title he doesnt even want to put it on the line, disrespecting everything that title stands for. In the

past Jurah has been a fierce competitor who wouldbattle his way through anything standing in hisway, now he just wants to be a paper champion andnot even let anyone have a chance at taking what heworked so hard for. We have seen in the past

people disrespect the EPW championship, it wasBobby Marshall who kept the title in the bag andwouldnt let anyone see it, but now we have achampion using his book smarts to aid his cunningways of trying to keep the belt. Jamie has statedthat he has a law degree and is studying for his

second, and he is using that to his full advantage. Ibelieve this is the first time a champion is out

  • 8/8/2019 Westside Pro Wrestling - Issue 12 - August 2010

    18/25

    Westside Pro Wrestling Page 18

smarting the board of directors, Brett Corvus isgoing to have a hard time dealing with Jurahsconstant manipulation of the legality of being acompanies champion. I have known Jamie for along time and have not been able to contact himsince the events that took place at Evolution 2010, I

wanted to get an interview with him for this articlebut he wont answer my calls. From what I hear noone has been in contact with Jamie, and no one

know what he will do next, he has always beenunpredictable, but not like this. Well all have towait and see what Jamie will do to try and protecthimself from losing the title, and knowing howsmart he is, he could have that belt for a very longtime.

Until next time keep supporting local wrestling andstay tuned to epwperth.com

I am getting really excited about welcoming in myview the Worlds Most Dominant and Best WomenWrestler in the world to our Ranks - AwesomeKong. Initially we began NHPW IndyGurlzWomens Division last year atHardcore

Resurrection 2009.Mercedes Martinez and Bombshell Bo tore the

roof down in a great hard hitting match that mademost of the locker room of that night cringe hitafter hit. Then came a pleasant surprise at

Hardcore Resurrection 2010 of two local

Australian Women Standouts reigniting theIndyGurlz Division once again by easily garnering

Match of the Night Honours. This came in the formof Sydney and International Wrestling Star JessieMcKay when up against Melbourne and alsoInternational Superstar Rate Tank Kelly Skater.

This match epitomized the quality of WomensWrestling and showed there is a place for it righthere in WA as real wrestling not T&A. In sayingthat Awesome Kong plays the anti-christ to thatterminology. Trained in Japan and standing 6ft tall& 123kgs - Kong is a Monster in any terms. Shehits harder than most males, can play the technicianand go with anyone as well as, even scarier, sheflies with the best aerial assault mongers.

I was always ear bashed by other workers aboutmy beliefs in womens wrestling and their place inthe Wrestling scene. I for one am a true believer init, not for the T & A factor but for what it presentsto the table of a show. Women are great to look at

or in essence very much a required presence on ashow.

Photo: Online World of WrestlingWrestling is always noted as being a live Carnivalof action. You keep throwing Tigers at a crowd

pretty soon the crowds going to get sick of them.Variety is always key in my way of thinking to atleast give the people who like Tigers that chance tomaybe see the acrobats, the midgets, the elephantsetc. Same with Wrestling, give themmatches containing just guys it can become a bitstale very quickly. Also about 30-40% of crowds

are female, 15% of that are little girls not just theones who want to look at the hot guy with themuscles (yes you know who you are ha-ha). But forthose say 15% of girls they have nothing to look upto or really see that can give them their opportunityto emulate.

Kong will be facing off with the returningBombshell Bo and Jessie McKay for the First EverIndyGurlz (Australian) ChampionshipI trulyrecommend coming to see Kong on August 20/21,

because in my mind if we are unable to ever haveher back you will miss seeing the womens equal toAndre / Hulk Hogan of this generation. Perth isluck as we will be the first and only one to have herand I would sure love to see her be welcomes withopen arms I think her performance will beunmatched by any international we will have in2010 visit WA shores.

I am so looking forward to the next few projects

that IndyGurlz will be coming up with includingsome TNA Knockouts that will be here very soon

besides from Kong and so much more. NHPW willbe the place where you will see the best Womenworkers in the world colliding in our Wrestlingring. I am very excited to see how this pans out as I

believe the Independent Wrestling Market here inPerth is yearning for an outlet for Womens actionof the highest level. Come see Awesome Kong -you will NOT be disappointed.

WPW: You made your debut at the first ever

    Explosive Coastal Wrestling showAwakeningin

November 2001 at quite a young age. What was

it like making your debut on what has become

somewhat of an significant step in WA wrestling

and did it feel like something special at the time?

MIKEY: I was like 16 years old back then and mandid it ever feel like something special. Dreams andaspirations were so much simpler back then, it wasalmost like I was getting everything I had alwayswanted. I of course have not watched that show

back since then, lol, but no matter how awful thewrestling may have been, it was, what it was andlike you said a pretty significant step in WAwrestling

WPW: You were part of the very first ECW

Championship match, a Four Way Match with

Davis Storm, Jimmy Payne and FN Carnage at

Redemption in January 2002, where things went

a little wrong. Was there ever any thought of

you giving wrestling away at that point and

what did you think of the publicity it got it in the

major papers like The West Australian?

MIKEY: Nah, there was never a thought of givingwrestling away. I guess its like they say, nopublicity is bad publicity right.

WPW: The following show, the first everEvolution in May 2002, you made an appearance

and cut a promo, which unfortunately there

were some technical issues with the mic. Even

with that the first ever sold out ECW crowd

gave you one awesome ovation. Were you

surprised with the support the crowd gave you

before you made the heel turn?MIKEY: Im so amazed that you can rememberthat far back. Yeah was pretty surprising, I meanwe had only done a few shows so it wasn't like wehad build up a huge audience or anything yet. Thething I remember most is the nerves, man i was asuch a buildup of nerves, I had such an awesome

promo planned out but then of course themicrophone doesn't work. In hindsight was

probably a good thing the mic didn't work. Ha-ha

WPW: Mid 2002 saw you join up with the

faction known as The Uprising, which pretty

much ran riot through ECW/EPW until the

classic street fight with Team EPW atRe-

Awakening IIin 2003. Along the way having

some top matches including the Last Man

Standing Match with Jimmy Payne. Do you

have fond memories of your time in the

Uprising?MIKEY: The stuff we did with The Uprising was

some of the most fun times of my entire wrestling, dare I say, career. It was so much fun turning up toshows and essentially just hanging out with yourfriends and doing whatever you wanted. In thattime as well I think I grew as not only a wrestler

but as a character and my confidence of being outin front of people really grew. The last manstanding match with Jimmy was a whole heap offun, and as far as the Street fight goes, that was oneof the most emotional and most fun nights of mylife. I think anyone in attendance that night wouldagree with me when I say that the emotion anddrama was off the charts that night.

WPW: You were part of the NWA Australia

promotion in Adelaide, which drew 1000+ fans

to the Thebarton Theatre for its debut show

    Turning Over Tradition. Unfortunately, the

crowds plummeted to less than 100 within three

shows and the company folded. What was the

experience like wrestling in front of such a big

crowd for the first time and being part of a

national promotion?MIKEY: It was great honour initially just to beasked to be apart of the show, made me feel like Iwas getting somewhere in Australia. It was also

great to wrestle in front of that many people, tomeet a lot of the guys from other states and seeingguys that I definitely looked up to within Australia.

WPW: 2004 was quite a big year for you.

Match, taking on Davis Storm in a couple of

    number one contenders matches, finally

winning the EPW Championship in a triple

title for the very first time atRe-Awakening III?MIKEY: 2004-05 was such a rollercoaster time forme both in and out of wrestling and I think a lot ofthat showed in the way that I wrestled and thematches that I had. Im so proud of my chain matchwith Azazal and was so happy when it was votedmatch of the year. Then it all kinda came togetherin the triple threat match at RA when I won the beltfor the first time. I like to think that I had a greatfirst run without the belt and had some prettymemorable matches.

WPW: You held the title until Evolution 2005before Richter cashed in his title shot after you

had a hard fought Fatal Four Way with Jimmy

Payne, Havok and Jag. You got your rematch at

Dirty Deeds, which was the first ever show at the

Alma Venville Centre, which was a Street Fight.

You climbed up a wall and did a dive off the

balcony which was an awesome thing to see.

Was that a spur of the moment thing or had you

had that idea in mind as soon as you saw the

    building?

MIKEY: Ha-ha, that was most definitely the firstthing I thought of when I saw that building. It wasthe first show we had done in a new venue so Ifigured I was in a situation to make it asmemorable as possible.

WPW: You made your first overseas trip in late

2005 to SoCal training and wrestling out of the

Inoki Dojo with Jag Hartley Jackson and

Davis Storm. What was the first overseas

experience like for you training with guys like

Fergal Devitt and Karl Anderson?MIKEY: It was always a dream of mine to train atthe Inoki Dojo and it really just sorta happened outof nowhere. I look back on that time now as the

most fun and also the most intense time in my life.I made some great friends out of it and we were allkinda going through the same thing together youknow, so it made it even better. The first overseasexperience was definitely an eye opener for me tohow the rest of the wrestling world works. Mademe realise we have it pretty good here in Perth.

WPW: Returning to Perth in February 2006,

you dropped the EPW Championship to Havok

at Stand & Deliver in March, before returning

to the States. Your second tour succeeding your

first as you along with Karl Anderson

challenged Alex Koslov for the NWA HeritageChampionship and Rocky Romero for the

CMLL Championship in a Two out of Three

Falls Match. Was the push you received during

this tour where you felt like you could make a

name for yourself on the SoCal Indy scene?MIKEY: It wasn't so much that I thought I couldmake a name for myself it was more the fact that Iwas so shocked and excited to be in the same ring

as those guys. The triple threat match was a wholelot of fun and it was such an honour to be selectedto wrestle someone who I have the utmost respectfor and definitely someone I look up to in Rocky. Ialso think that the 2 out of 3 falls match took me toa whole new level with wrestling. It was like I hadto bring myself up to his level, which I stillmaintain is the best way to better yourself as awrestler. Train and wrestle with people who are

better than you and you will always be forced tocome up to their level. Because if they are anygood they sure as hell wont get dragged down toyours!

    Photo: New Japan Pro Wrestling

WPW: In what is an awesome achievement, yourself along with Hartley Jackson were the

first ever Australians to compete for New Japan

Pro Wrestling, taking part in a Tag Match

against Minoru & Hirooki Goto in Tokyo

Korakuen Hall. Did it get overwhelming or didyou feel like it was just another step forward in

the career of Mikey Nicholls and would you like

    to go back?

MIKEY: Man was it ever overwhelming. I don'tthink I have ever been so nervous in my entire life.Trying to get everything together in a differentcountry, with people who don't speak the samelanguage man it was a trip. At the time it was ahuge step forward for me and it kinda disappointsme a little that I didn't capitalise on it more, butcant dwell in the past. I would give anything to go

    back.

WPW: September 7, 2007 at EWFs GoldStandard, you became the first ever Western

Australian wrestler to win a title in the United

States when you defeated then champion Karl

Anderson and Ryan Taylor in a 30 Minute

Triple Threat Ironman match to become the

    new EWF American Champion.

MIKEY: It felt real good to hold some gold in the

states. Definitely made me feel like I was on theright track. I also think I had a couple really goodmatches while I was the champ, made me a lotmore confident with my wrestling.

WPW: 2009 saw you make a change of scenery

moving from the SoCal scene to Ohio to wrestle

for the Northern Wrestling Federation and

during the nine month stay you got to make

your debut for Ring of Honor in a few Dark

Matches. What was that experience like?

MIKEY: It was a real surreal experience. For thelongest time I had, like most people, had beenwatching ROH stuff and wishing I was there, wellall of a sudden here it was right in front of me. Thewhole atmosphere was great, I met some great guysand also had some real solid matches.

WPW: Returning to EPW in late 2009, you were

voted by the fans as the partner for Shane Haste

to take on Slex and Carlo Cannon for the EPW

    Tag Team Championships atRe-Awakening 8.

You won the titles in a brutal Ladder Match and

defended them in some great matches before

losing them just recently in a Tables Match.

What is your next goal in EPW?MIKEY: Im not sure yet. I was having a whole lot

of fun doing the tag stuff with Shane and I thinkthat we had a pretty memorable run. Its been awhile since I held the EPW title, maybe I will havea go and try my luck at that. I think there is still alot of fire left inside Mikey Nicholls.

Photo: Explosive Pro WrestlingWPW: Do you have plans to return to the States

in 2010-2011 and where would you like to go,

back to SoCal or Ohio?MIKEY: I don't know man, Im never one to makedefinite plans, I prefer to just take it as it comes andsee what happens. I will go back to the states forsure, not sure how or when, but it will happen.

WPW: What does Mikey Nicholls hope to do in

the wrestling business before he retires?MIKEY: I guess just keep having fun and keep

bettering myself. Once that enjoyment goes itskinda hard to keep motivated and also becomeshard to keep justifying to yourself why you do ityou know. But I guess as long as Im movingforward and having fun, I cant complain too much.

WPW: Thank you for speaking to Westside Pro

    Wrestling Mikey.
