Strong West Emergency celebrates one year in Brockport

Strong West staff members joined Mi-chael F. Kamali, M.D., chair of Emergency Medicine at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and Strong West Direc-tor Bryan J. O’Donovan to celebrate the one-year anniversary of the re-opening of emergency services in Brockport.

The community was without an emer-gency department after Lakeside Memo-rial Hospital closed in spring 2013. URMC purchased the site and worked closely with the state Department of Health for more than a year to create an off-campus ED, a new model of care and the first of its kind in upstate New York.

The return of higher-level, 24-hour emergency care to the Brockport area came with the opening of Strong West Emergency on August 19, 2014.

UR Medicine’s Strong West consists of Strong West Emergency; an ambulatory surgical center; Imaging; Labs; primary care practices in Brockport, Spencerport and LeRoy; Interlakes Oncology and He-matology; Strong Urgent Care in Spencer-port; Occupational Medicine; as well as Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation, Cardiol-ogy, Neurosurgery, Urology, Gastroenter-ology, and Sleep Medicine specialists.

Rangers open with shutoutby Warren Kozireski

Spencerport scored three goals in the second half to open up their 1-0 halftime lead in a 4-0 shutout of Gates Chili in the boys soccer opener for both teams.

Using a tactical passing-ball control of-fense along with aggressive ball pursuit on defense, the Rangers got on the board just 7:08 into the contest when senior captain Conolly served a pass from midfield to David DeBellis, who turned and fired his shot off the goalkeeper’s hands and into the net. It marked the first varsity goal for the three-year varsity senior.

Late in the first half Gates Chili, who had trouble maintaining possession in the offensive zone most of the game, managed a quick breakout, but a shot by Jeremy Casiano was stopped by Rangers keeper Connor MacKenzie.

“We got away from our style of game a bit late in the first half, but the last half of the game we started getting back to it,” Jake Hutton said.

Spencerport made it 2-0 in the 44th min-ute on a direct kick from 22 yards out after Hutton was taken down. Senior Dan Reger had his shot deflect in off a leg in the wall for his first goal of the season.

The Spartans had another breakaway attempt broken up by a back-checking

Conolly in the 52nd minute and the Rang-ers dominated play the rest of the way.

Joe Riggio volleyed a pass to Hutton, whose header was knocked away on a div-ing save in the 56th minute.

Sophomore Joe Curtis made it 3-0 Rang-ers converting after Victor Pascucci headed a pass to the right side of the box.

And, with eight minutes remaining, se-nior Mike Caceci celebrated his birthday in grand fashion taking a back pass off the end line from Josh Gillette and banking it in the net off the goal post for the fourth and final tally.

“I really wanted to score today and it’s awesome to score,” Caceci said. “But I’m really more happy with the win.”

MacKenzie and senior Matt Kegler, who came on for the final seven minutes, com-bined for the shutout in goal.

The Rangers look strong with 16 seniors on this year’s team after falling to Church-ville-Chili in the Section V quarterfinals a year ago.

“We really don’t know what we have yet,” Rangers head coach Tom Etsler said. “(Greece) Athena is going to be quite a battle and Churchville lost some guys, but will still be tough again.”

This year’s captains are Conolly, senior Spenser Doty and MacKenzie.

Brockport CSD adds five newmembers to Athletic Wall of Honor

Brockport Central School District will add five new names to its Athletic Wall of Honor. Inductees for 2015 include: Tom Beck (BHS Class of 1984), Nancy Beck Begier (BHS Class of 1985), Chris Bourne (Brockport’s Director of Athletics and Physical Education from 1997-2014), Scott Fake (BHS Physical Education Teacher and soccer and swim coach from 1975-2011) and Jeff Rogers (BHS Class of 1984). The district is very proud to recognize these community leaders for the impact they have made on the Interscholastic Athletic program and on the lives of Brockport stu-dent athletes.

This year’s Athletic Wall of Honor Induc-tion Ceremony will take place at the A.D. Oliver Middle School, 40 Allen Street on September 11. The community is invited to attend the ceremony, from 6:30 to 7:15

p.m., preceded by a social gathering in the cafeteria, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Inductees will visit the Wall of Honor following the ceremony. At 7:30 p.m., all attendees are invited to the night’s Varsity football game, taking place at the Dahn Walrath Memo-rial Stadium. There the new Wall of Honor inductees will again be acknowledged dur-ing halftime.

Wall of Honor nominees can be an athlete, coach, administrator, community member or role model who has made a difference for the BCSD Interscholastic Athletic Program. Criteria for selection include bravery, honor, service, support, teamwork, sportsmanship and dedication to the program. Each honoree is recognized on the Wall of Honor with a plaque, which includes their picture and biography.

Annual “Gathering-time” for local gardeners: “Life is a garden ... Dig it!”by Kristina Gabalski

September is here and gardeners’ thoughts are turning towards wrapping up the harvest and preparing for the winter ahead.

While you’re enjoying the last hurrah of your annuals and the autumnal colors of newly planted chrysanthemums, you might want to consider attending this year’s “A Gathering of Gardeners 2015” - an annual symposium - planned for Saturday, Sep-tember 12 at the Eisenhart Auditorium of the Rochester Museum and Science Center. This year’s theme is, “Life is a garden.... Dig it!”

Monroe County Cornell Cooperative Extension hosts the event. Horticulture Educator Karen Klingenberger says the Gathering has become a yearly tradition for many.

“It’s the 19th year we’ve been doing it,” she says. “The main focus is education, but it’s a great end-of-season gathering for like-minded gardeners. Everybody comes away enthusiastic and inspired. It’s just a fabulous day.”

Featured speakers this year are horticul-turalist and author Jessica Walliser, co-host of KDKA Radio’s “The Organic Gardeners,” and author of books Grow Organic, Good Bug, Bad Bug, and Attracting Benefi-cial Bugs to Your Garden. Additionally, Walliser is a garden columnist and regular contributor to Organic Gardening.

Naomi Brooks is a landscape designer for Verdant Landscapes in the Hudson Valley. She helps to “dream, design, and deliver

uncommon outdoor spaces.” Brooks holds certificates in Gardening and Landscape Design from the New York Botanic Gar-den, where she is an instructor. She has also assisted at the New Moon Nursery, a wholesale propagator of eastern perennials in New Jersey.

The event gets underway at 8 a.m. on September 12 with registration, coffee, raffle ticket sale and the popular “Parking Lot Sale” which is open to the public.

Klingenberger says vendors include lo-cal growers who bring a wide variety of plants and garden objects to sell. “Speakers give them plant lists so they have plants in stock which the speakers have talked about,” she says.

Walliser will discuss “Forgotten Garden Combinations,” and “Shade Gardens and Plants,” and Brooks will speak on “Big Ideas for the Littler Landscape,” and “Garden Maintenance for Time-Challenged Gardeners.”

Tickets are $50/person; $45/for Cornell Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners and are on sale until September 10. Order on-line through the Monroe County Cornell Cooperative Extension website, http://mon-roe.cce.cornell.edu/ or by mail using a check and the registration form available on the Gathering of Gardeners website, www.gatheringofgardeners.com.

Klingenburger says any remaining tick-ets will be available the day of the event on a first-come, first-served basis.

Box lunches are also available for $11. For information visit the Gathering of Gardeners website.
