Last month saw the arrival of the new Mayor in Weston, we wish him all the best for the coming year, and we would like to congratulate the former Mayor Dave Hitchin for doing a fantastic job for the town.

There were some great events in the town. The Air Day was a huge success, also The North Somerset and Sedgemoor business show at the Winter Gardens proved very successful, with many businesses re-booking for next year’s event.

We hope you like this month’s Issue, covering the 50th Anniversary of The Beatles playing at the Odeon Cinema in Weston super Mare.

New express coach service set to make life easy for commutersNorth Somerset Council is investing in a new commuter coach service provided by coach operator The Kings Ferry Ltd, that will link Weston-super-Mare, Clevedon and Portishead with major employment areas in North Bristol.

The new service will give regular commuters the option to leave the car at home and enjoy a stress-free journey to work.

Currently there are no direct public transport service links and limited rail options from North Somerset to business areas on the Bristol/South Gloucestershire border. So, following a tender process, the council has contracted the South East based coach operator to run eight express services via the M5 motorway on two routes during the morning and evening rush hours. One route will start in Weston and pick up in Clevedon, the other will start in Portishead.

Council surveys show that over 3,500 vehicles commute from Weston, Clevedon and Portishead to the Bristol ‘North Fringe’ each day. So, as well as offering commuters a convenient way to get to work, the service will also help reduce pollution and congestion in all three towns and on the M5.

The Kings Ferry, which is part of the National Express Group, is providing four brand new 49-seat, fully accessible coaches for commuters. The vehicles will be kitted out with luxury seats, air conditioning, drink machines, toilets, TV screens and WiFi so passengers can relax or go online to work and catch up with friends while they travel.

Kick-start funding for the new service is coming from the council’s Local Sustainable Transport Fund (LSTF), a two-year project funded by the Department for Transport, which is improving public transport links in and around North Somerset for anyone travelling to work, school or training.

On top of the council’s two year kick-start funding, The Kings Ferry has committed to run the service for at least a further two years, hopefully securing the commuter link’s long-term viability.

Cllr Elfan Ap Rees, who has executive responsibility for highways and transport, said: “We are very pleased to be getting close to the start of this commuter service which we hope will take further pressure off the route between Weston and the North Fringe, as well as offering savings to residents currently commuting to this area by private car. It is also good to see a new operator starting in North Somerset and, if the demand is sufficient, I see no reason why this shouldn’t become a commercially sustainable service once the kick-start funding expires.”

The Kings Ferry has been operating coach services in the South East for 30 years. Last year it saw a record rise in passenger numbers using its Kent to London service - taking the total number of passenger journeys to well over half-a-million a year - as commuters enjoy the benefits of lower cost journeys, guaranteed seats and real-time vehicle tracking.

The Kings Ferry Commercial Director Danny Elford said: “We are delighted to be involved in this exciting partnership with North Somerset Council. Faced with inflation busting rail-fare price hikes and spiralling petrol prices, more and more commuters are taking the coach to work because it’s reliable, comfortable and great value for money. We have nearly 30 years of experience of running commuter coaches and we are certain this region has the fundamental elements needed for a successful service.“

The council will work with The Kings Ferry to determine the commuter coach route, timings and ticket options. The service is due to launch in the autumn.

It’s 50 years this month since ‘The Fab Four’ played The Odeon, Weston-super-Mare. Over six nights in July ‘63, they played twice-nightly to packed crowds of screaming fans, as part of their 1963 tour of the UK.

The gruelling tour that year had started on the 3rd of January with a few dates in Scotland and then moved south to encompass most of England and Wales, before another mini-tour of Scotland, a trip to Sweden and then back to Northern Ireland and England again!

After billings throughout the country with other headliners such as Helen Shapiro, Tommy Roe/Chris Montes, Roy Orbison and Billy J Kramer and the Dakotas, it was time for the summer tour, starting on the 10th of June at the Bath Pavilion.

After playing Queen’s Theatre, Blackpool on the 21st of July, The Beatles travelled down to Weston-super-Mare (pre-motorway mind!), and booked into the now sadly gone Royal Pier Hotel, readying themselves for six nights at The Odeon. On this part of the tour they were supported by Gerry and the Pacemakers, with 5 other variety acts also on the bill.

After the release earlier that summer of the album ‘Please, Please Me’ (which was currently No1 in the hit parade) and the EP of ‘Twist and Shout’, The Beatles were the biggest thing around and a must see.

It would be six months later, in February 1964, that they travelled to tour the USA. The rest, as they say, is history. The Beatles became the biggest, and many would say, the most influential band on the planet.

Local photographer Pete Brownett had access to the group through a photography assignment and has kindly shared his memories of the occasion.

‘As a young and naive 15 year old, I was just starting my first job as an apprentice photographer. I was asked to help out on an assignment and take a set of photographs when they (The Beatles) visited the town on the 25th. I was also allowed to take a couple of pictures for myself.Sometimes in life there are moments that point you in the right direction and that time, taking photographs of The Beatles, was definitely one of them!I was an awestruck teenager; but remember, clearly, discovering that the four were down-to-earth human beings, with a wonderful outlook on life and a respect for their roots. This made a lasting impression on me and gave me a philosophy by which I have lived and worked since. It has given me the strength and determination to persevere.It would be my birthday three days after the shoot, but I managed to get the 32/6 up front that I needed to buy ‘Please, Please Me’ .I didn’t know until just after 1pm that I would be involved with the photo shoot, but when told, I was determined to get the album and the autographs on it. This could have been a problem, as Weston closed on a Thursday at 1pm! However, I managed to find someone to open up a record shop so I could purchase the album. Armed with it and a considerable amount of pride, I proceeded to the Odeon and acquired autographs from all the band members.’

“I shall always remember the time I met The Beatles; it was a hot summer’s night, 22nd July 1963.

At the time Mario and I from Fumble, along with Mario’s brother Remo and drummer Bob Davies had formed a band known as The Iveys.

That night we had been playing a gig a few miles out of town at Rossholm School for Girls at Brent Knoll. After our gig, we made our way back to Weston. I was on my Triumph Tiger Cub motor bike with Bob on the back, Remo was on his Vespa scooter with his brother.

Riding into Weston, we were astonished to see thousands of highly excited people surrounding the Odeon cinema. Then it clicked, The Beatles were in town and had just performed their first night of a week-long series of concerts at the Odeon.

Although they were the biggest band around in 1963, they had not yet reached the extraordinary heights for which they were destined - hence their week of concerts in Weston-super-Mare!

It was obvious from the crowds The Beatles hadn’t yet left the Odeon, so we parked up (easier then than now!) to savour the moment.

After five minutes, the hub-bub from the crowd turned into a roar as a white 15cwt Thames van backed up to the exit opposite the Bristol & Exeter pub (known today as Bonds Wine Bar).

The Beatles were about to exit the building!

Their long-time friend and driver, Neil Aspinall, was at the wheel and was gingerly reversing the vehicle through the crowd, trying to position it so The Beatles could jump straight into the back from the stage door.

The “Fab Four” burst through the exit, and dived into the van, still finding time for a smile and a wave to their fans.

The back door slammed shut, and they were away. We jumped on our bikes, following in hot pursuit, and soon realised they were hopelessly lost, going around in circles and getting nowhere.

On their second excursion to Wadham Street (near Grove Park), the van stopped; they must have seen us following them, as one of the back doors opened, George Harrison’s head appeared, and asked me in his unmistakable Liverpool accent “Can you tell us the way to the Royal Pier Hotel please?”

Trying not to show my excitement at this unexpected encounter, I said “Sure, follow us.”

We headed off with The Beatles in tow, reached the hotel, and still grasping the moment, followed them inside.

However, we felt a little awkward standing in the reception with them and not knowing what to do, we turned and said goodnight. John Lennon looked at us… “Thanks very much lads - Goodnight!” Still excited, I thought that was the end of our ‘Beatles Experience’, but it was only the beginning!

We had booked our tickets for the second night’s concert months before, and enjoyed every second of it – they were a great great band.

Des Henly has travelled extensively all over the world, playing with the band ‘Fumble’.

However, in the summer of ‘63, he was an up-and-coming 16 year old musician in the local band ‘The Iveys’.

Des was good enough to share with us the events that led up to meeting The Beatles for the first time, in July 1963.

I knew one of the Odeon’s managers, and that night he asked me “was that you on the motor bike last night?”, when I said yes, he said “we just can’t get the Beatles away after the show, the crowds are far too big, so we’ve made a plan”.

“We are going to use decoy vans at one of the other exits, if you can be backstage each night, we will decide which one we intend to use at the last minute, you can be there waiting with your bikes to guide them to their hotel”.

We jumped at the offer, and for the rest of the week became the Beatles’ official “outriders”!

One night the Beatles spilled out of the designated exit, we were waiting for them, but the van didn’t appear. There we were on the pavement with the “Fab Four”, with thousands of screaming fans just around the corner looking for them! Any second we expected someone to shout “THERE THEY ARE!”, and to be engulfed.

George said what I thought was “let’s get the car”.

It so happened that week George had put his Mark X Jag in for a service at Victoria Garage, which at that time, had an entrance directly opposite the exit being used that evening.

One of my team, Mike Millington (Millie) held the keys to Victoria Garage, he was a mechanic there.

We all ran across the raised grass plantation to get to the garage’s entrance on Alexandra Parade.

On the way John Lennon fell over with a curse, I helped him up and we carried on running genuinely frightened we would be spotted by the mob at any moment.

We entered the garage, Mike took the band to George’s car, they all looked bemused; George said “what the hell are we doing here?”

I replied “you said let’s get the car” George - “I said cab not car!” OOPS! There we were with the four Beatles, still in their classic stage gear, (Beatle jackets and Cuban heeled shoes, with their ties still firmly in place), stood in a dimly-lit garage in Weston-super-Mare at 10.30 pm. – it was surreal! They all jumped in George’s car, and we escorted them home safe and sound.

Being backstage with them for the next four nights, we had many conversations and were on first name terms.

Every night we spent at least 15 or 20 minutes alone with The Beatles waiting for our exit instructions. There were many conversations . . . . and many memories.

. . . . Being told off by all four of them because the brake light on my motorbike wasn’t working, and having to promise to get it fixed. . . .

. . . . The time their van stopped at traffic lights, girls recognising them and screaming, only for Ringo to grin at me pointing vigorously to his chest assuring me that the girls were screaming for him not me. (Ringo did have a great sense of humour)

And lastly, backstage at the Odeon, I watched every performance from the wings, and was never more chuffed than when Paul glanced at me and gave a wink of recognition.

Eighteen years later, I had the chance to return the gesture. Paul invited Fumble to appear with him and others at the Hammersmith Odeon in London.

As we were playing our set, I saw him stood in the wings watching, just as I had done eighteen years earlier in Weston-super-Mare.

I nodded at him and winked – Paul raised his thumb and nodded back, but he could never have known that this exchange had taken me back to Weston eighteen years previously when, aged 16, I had been so proud to be a Beatles outrider!

In his first article, featured in our May edition, Colin Middle outlined the way that postcards were used as the ‘tweets’ of their time.

Throughout the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, postcards were used to convey images and greetings, as well as updates on family life and ‘wish you were here’ holiday messages. But they are also a snapshot of times, fashions and attitudes of the people living in those periods of history.

The seaside photographers of Weston-super-Mare, and many other resorts around the country, made a great living snapping and then charging for their pictures, as the the majority of people did not own a camera (which were relatively expensive), but did wish to capture the moment or have a portrait of a loved one taken.

The first three pictures here were taken and produced by R W Brown at his ‘Royal Studios’, 32 Regent Street, Weston-super-Mare. He specialised in portraiture.

Regent Street seemed to be the hub for photographic studios in Weston. Crown Studios were at 23, Ballantynes Studio was at 59 (later to become the Railway Hotel) and the Grand Pier Co were at number 60.

Postcards from the past – Part 2

16103 Private Albert Clifford Exton was born in Little George Street, Weston-super-Mare, in 1895. His father died when Albert was at the tender age of just five, and his mother subsequently moved the family to West

Row in Worle. After leaving school Albert worked for the Birnbeck Pier Company.

Although the family had moved to Worle, Albert continued to work for the Birnbeck Pier Company until he heard the call to arms and enlisted in 10th Battalion, Gloucestershire Regiment, within a week of the outbreak of war.

After a few months training he proceeded to France, where he was fortunate to have not received an injury for twelve months. Unfortunately his luck was not to hold and he was severely wounded with shrapnel in the head, as well as in the back, at La Basse. The wounds were so serious that he was sent back to a hospital in Plymouth. Possessing a fine constitution, he had a short convalescence and, after spending a short leave at home, he returned to active duty with his old regiment, at the end of

June 1916, acting as a stretcher bearer. It was whilst he was acting in this capacity that he received fatal shrapnel wounds.

He was killed in action 29th August 1916 and is commemorated on the Thieval Memorial in the Somme, France.

The Great Weston Ride - Thinking big, acting local

This year’s Great Weston Ride (www.greatwestonride.com), which is taking place on Sunday 21st July, has seen unprecedented levels of interest and has already

surpassed last year’s record entry, and with fewer than 100 places remaining, the 2013 event looks all set to sell out well in advance.The Ride offers a spectacular route that starts on the outskirts of Bristol and then takes riders on a fabulous journey through the Mendips and across the Somerset Levels before finishing 56 miles later on the seafront in Weston-super-Mare. The event itself has plenty to offer experienced cyclists, not least some spectacular views and scenery but it also attracts lots of new or inexperienced riders and, as in previous years, once again a large number of the 2013 Ride participants will be undertaking their first major long-distance cycling challenge.This has been a feature of the Great Weston Ride from the start and, as previous participants testify, riders are comprehensively supported and looked after from start to finish, regardless of their cycling experience or ability.Whilst the vast majority of entrants inevitably come from the Bristol and North Somerset areas, as the Ride’s popularity grows, people are increasingly coming from further afield to take on the challenge and, at the same time, enjoy a great West Country day out.To complete the West Country experience, as well as showcasing some of the region’s best scenery, the event also enjoys considerable support and backing from a number of local organisations, including Butcombe Brewery and North Somerset premium meat producers Field & Flower.After completing the 56-mile route, riders can look forward to celebrating their achievements with a pint or two of the region’s favourite beer, Butcombe Bitter, from the on-site event bar while Field & Flower will be on hand serving freshly-cooked, top-quality free food to all the hungry riders.Other local supporters include BCDS (Bristol Cycling Development Squad), the region’s leading youth-

oriented cycling club, who provide substantial logistical support throughout the day, and even the slick pre- and post-Ride transport services are courtesy of local companies - Weston’s Coombs Travel provide the coaches that ferry riders to the start either before or after the Ride, while experienced removal experts CMS Hire from Bristol provide secure and protected bike transportation for riders’ trusty steeds.Also, for the first time this year, the Great Weston Ride has partnered with British Cycling’s ‘Breeze’ initiative as part of a concerted effort to get even more women on their bikes and rising to the challenge, – local Breeze champions and their groups are already engaging with the event.Ride Organiser Darren McKimm explained: “Historically, over 25% of our riders are women, which is very high compared to most long-distance cycling events, but we want to push that figure over 30% and working with Breeze seems the perfect way to do that. We’re very much behind what they’re trying to do in terms of supporting and encouraging women riders, and equally they see that the Great Weston Ride is the perfect event for women for that first long-distance challenge”.The Ride’s other major partner is Prostate Cancer UK, the leading male-oriented cancer charity in the UK, and over the last two years riders have already raised well over £40,000 for this one charity alone (and over £80,000 for charitable causes as a whole). Pony Publishing team at Business ShowBusiness people from as far afield as Devon and Surrey were able to meet the Pony Publishing team at The North Somerset and Sedgemoor Business Show at Weston’s Winter Gardens last month.The group’s Sales and Marketing manager, Nick Carter, said, “It was a really successful day for us; not only did we meet with some of our existing clients, but we made new contacts and were able to tell everyone about how our Weston and Worle View magazine is growing and developing.”Company Director, Steve Drew, agreed, adding, “There was a great mix of exhibitors and, whilst

the footfall wasn’t huge, we were very pleased with the quality of visitor. At this warm time of year owners often want to take their dogs out with them and occasionally end up leaving them in the car. This can be fatal even if they are only left for a few minutes with windows open.

When it is 22 degrees outside it can soar to 47 degrees in a car within less than 60 minutes. If you see a dog unattended in a car, please dial 999 or phone the RSPCA. Please leave your dog at home this summer, he’ll thank you for it!

Most rabbit owners will have heard of Flystirke.

This is where flies lay eggs which hatch into

maggots and eat away at flesh. Rabbits at high risk

from Flystrike usually have a dirty bottom caused

by obesity, old age and dirty hutches. Please check

your rabbit’s bottom at least twice daily to make

sure it is clean and free from flies/maggots. We run

a ‘Bunny Offer’ for £20 which includes Flystrike

A common problem we encounter when walking

dogs around the Mendips is adder bites. Adders

are venomous and clinical signs of a bite usually

occur within 2 hours. There may be localised

pain, swelling and bruising. Sometimes puncture

wounds may also be visible. Other symptoms can

include lethargy, increased heart rate, increased

temperature, excess salivation, vomiting and

panting. If you suspect your dog has been bitten by

an adder try to keep your dog as quiet as possible

and contact us immediately.

GO KIDS GO!Running alongside our festival, in conjunction with The Weston Mercury, is a grant scheme ‘GO KIDS GO!’ which has a total of £10,000 to donate to successful applicants who are involved with children in sport and activity. That could be a school or club, a drama group or society, who need increased finance to enhance their facilities.Are you involved with such a group or do you know someone who is? The money is waiting for you and all you have to do is complete the application form, which is available from The Mercury in both hard copy and electronically from their website. The closing date for applications has been extended to 8th July and the presentations will take place on 28th July.

JAZZ on the LAWNOn Sunday afternoon we have arranged an event for all the family on the Beach Lawns ‘JAZZ on the LAWN’. We have booked two bands - The Axe Valley Jazz Band and Panama Jazz, two very successful local groups. Entry is completely FREE - so bring a seat or blanket, sit back and enjoy from 12.00 - 5.00pm

The bar is open and there is plenty of food available from various stalls.

Woodland Lawn Tennis Club, W-s-MCOME AND PLAY SESSIONS

Woodland has two open sessions where non-members can come along and enjoy a game of tennis.

On Fridays, from 9.30am until 11ish, Woodland runs a ladies’ morning. All abilities are welcome, even complete beginners, and the most essential requirement is a good

sense of humour! Light refreshments and a good chat also play a major role in the morning’s activities.

Rackets can be provided. The cost to non-members is £2 and members can come along for free.

On Thursday evenings, from 6.30pm, there is an open Club evening where social games are arranged. Again,

there is a £2 charge for non-members; this session is not suitable for those who have never played before.

Team Mendip Strikeback!!Team Mendip gained promotion this season with a second place finish in Somerset Ladies League in only their second season, this has now allowed them to enter a Reserve team into the league, as a result competition for a place in the 1st team has now increased.

Team Mendip have now stepped up training by linking up with Strikebackgym in Lynx Crescent. Strikebackgym is currently putting on Boot-Camp training sessions for clubs and groups and are putting the ladies through their paces.

Strikeback Coach James Lucas said “the ladies worked very hard” and he was impressed with their effort.
