*Unison Prayer of Confession

God of all flesh, in Jesus Christ you have immersed divine splendor and wisdom into human life. He is not repelled by the shabbiness and shamefulness of our lives, but seeks to redeem us. We confess our repulsion from those whose actions bewilder us, whose sorrow burdens us, or whose good fortune somehow detracts from our lives. Our compassion is limited to those like ourselves. Our kindness is reserved for those kind to us. Our passionate concern remains silent until we are the ones threatened. O God, forgive us. Cleanse us of self-centeredness, and open us to the whole breadth and length, height and depth of your love, manifest in all creation. Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. (Moment of silence for personal reflection.)

*Assurance of God's Forgiveness Hal Murry

*Response "O Lamb of God" O Lamb of God, you take away the sins of the world; have mercy on us, Lamb of God, and grant us your peace.

Isaiah 42:1-9 ( NRSV)

42Here is my servant, whom I uphold, my chosen, in whom my soul delights; I have put my spirit upon him; he will bring forth justice to the nations. 2 He will not cry or lift up his voice, or make it heard in the street; 3 a bruised reed he will not break, and a dimly burning wick he will not quench; he will faithfully bring forth justice. 4 He will not grow faint or be crushed until he has established justice in the earth; and the coastlands wait for his teaching.

5 Thus says God, the Lord, who created the heavens and stretched them out, who spread out the earth and what comes from it, who gives breath to the people upon it and spirit to those who walk in it: 6 I am the Lord, I have called you in righteousness, I have taken you by the hand and kept you; I have given you as a covenant to the people, a light to the nations, 7to open the eyes that are blind, to bring out the prisoners from the dungeon, from the prison those who sit in darkness. 8 I am the Lord, that is my name; my glory I give to no other, nor

my praise to idols. 9 See, the former things have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth, I tell you of them.

Matthew 3:13-17 ( NRSV)

13 Then Jesus came from Galilee to John at the Jordan, to be baptized by him. 14John would have prevented him, saying, ‘I need to be baptized by you, and do you come to me?’ 15But Jesus answered him, ‘Let it be so now; for it is proper for us in this way to fulfil all righteousness.’ Then he consented. 16And when Jesus had been baptized, just as he came up from the water, suddenly the heavens were opened to him and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. 17And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, the Beloved, with whom I am well pleased.’

Leader: The Word of the Lord. People: Thanks be to God.

Sermon: "Fulfilling All Righteousness" Marsha Wilfong

*Hymn #404 "Precious Lord, Take My Hand"

*Affirmation of Faith (Philippians 2:5-11, CEB) Hal Murry

Let us adopt the attitude that was in Christ Jesus: Though he was in the form of God, he did not consider being equal with God something to exploit. But he emptied himself by taking the form of a slave and by becoming like human beings. When he found himself in the form of a human, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross.

Therefore, God highly honored him and gave him a name above all names, so that at the name of Jesus everyone in heaven, on earth, and under the earth might bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Westminster Green Team Forming

The Mission Team is currently trying to gauge interest in forming a "Green Team" at Westminster. The Green Team would address the issues of climate change from a faith perspective and offer practical solutions to address those issues in everyday life. Those persons interested are invited to get our Green Team started by attending an informative Green Team Training Event which will be conducted by the newly-formed Dubuque Chapter of Iowa Interfaith Power & Light. The event will take place on Sunday afternoon, February 19th from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. at Sisters of the Presentation on Carter Road. It promises to be an exciting day to learn best practices, hear from successful Green Teams from other Dubuque congregations and plan the work of our own Green Team through hands-on activities.

If you are interested in the Green Team and attending the Training Event, please contact Tom Stovall of the Mission Team (581-7220 or [email protected]). A signup sheet is also located at the information desk in the narthex.

Volunteers Needed For DACU Hosting on January 24

Westminster will be hosting the annual meeting and dinner of Dubuque Area Congregations United (DACU) on Tuesday evening, January 24th. DACU is the official organization that brings together Dubuque's faith community and Westminster has been a member since the organization's creation. While the meal will be catered, we will need several volunteers to assist with setup, serving and cleanup. Setup begins at 4:00 p.m. and we will serve the meal at 6:15 p.m. followed by cleanup. Please come to help anytime during that period and be sure to wear your purple Westminster t-shirt. Westminster will also provide desserts for the meal. If you can provide a dessert please deliver it to church by 5:00 p.m. Sign-up sheets for volunteers and desserts are located at the counter in the narthex. If questions, please contact Tom or Linda Stovall, Westminster's delegates to DACU.

Thanks for your help!

FROM YOUR WESTMINSTER PRESBYTERIAN FOUNDATION:

Be a WILLing Christian. Remember Westminster Presbyterian Church in your will.

Books and Bowls will be meeting January 15, 10:45 in Fellowship Hall to discuss Clementine by Sonia Purnell. Winston Churchill referred to his wife as "She-whose-commands-must-be-obeyed." This is a factual, fascinating and well-written account of the woman who saved Churchill's career and perhaps saved Brittan from Nazi rule. Everyone is invited and there will be snacks.
