Greetings from the Committee who is trying to create the most chaos in any 12 month period ever at 3900 West End Avenue!

The next 60-75 days will be busy and hectic as we start the Mayfair work on January 2, 2017 and the Parlor, on January 9th. Entry into the Church on the Mayfair side will no longer be possible after January 2. Please come to the Wilson side of the campus to enter.

The second phase of our renovation is a big one. This phase includes:

• An upgraded street level entrance on the Mayfair side • Renovated staff offices • A new information center in the foyer • An expansion of the Parlor • Bigger classrooms on the third floor • Improvements to Goodpasture Hall, Goodpasture kitchen and restrooms

Parking will be very tight. The upper lot on Mayfair will be used for construction equipment and materials. Please note that during this period of construction, parking and restrooms will be in short supply.

We ask for your continued prayers for the safety, warmth and care of all the construction workers who are so very dedicated to our project. Thank you so very much for the generosity from each of you that has made this project a reality.

Life At WestminsterMeet Rachel PenceCandidate for Associate Pastor of Young Adults and Young Families• Tell us about yourself. I was born in 1986 and grew up in Jacksonville Florida, attending Riverside Presbyterian Church, where I am still a member. At thirteen I was invited by a friend to go to youth group. It was there that I began to gain a foothold in the church community. I went on trips to Montreat and Massanetta, served on Presbytery Youth Council and incorporated youth group and worship into my weekly life. It was during this time that I began to be able to express my faith and encounter scripture in a meaningful and intentional way.

Get to Know Rachel Pence and the role of Associate Pastor to Emerging Generations

The Associate Pastor Nominating Committee enthusiastically recommends Rachel Pence for the call of Associate Pastor to Young Adults and Young Families. The Session of Westminster has called a Congregational Meeting for the purpose of voting on the committee’s recommendation. The meeting will take place on Sunday, January 8th in the Sanctuary following the 11:00 am worship.

Rachel is steeped in the traditions and order of worship Westminster appreciates. You immediately feel an easiness in conversation with her. She compliments the current staff and will connect quickly with our young adults and the church as a whole.

– Jarron Springer, Committee Co-Chair

Following high school in 2004, I went to Winthrop University. I applied to work as a camp counselor at Montgomery Presbyterian Camp and Conference center in Starke, Florida and my faith was re-engaged and began to bloom on new levels. I found a deep connection with nature and the importance of community. I began to understand that faith is imperfect and messy and has no boundaries for expression. In my junior year in college I transferred to Queens University in Charlotte, NC and began a degree as a religion/philosophy major. My two years at Queens were filled with dramatic rebuilding of my person as well as my faith. I became involved with the chapel program, playing music and joining the leadership team. I delved into the world religions as well as classes that looked at the “problem of evil” and delving deeply into scripture. It was during these two years I was able to travel abroad to South Africa, Guatemala, and Northern Ireland. All of these pieces gave birth to the foundation of my current faith. The weekly chapel services, the community I gained, the international travel, as well as the class study awakened a thirst for knowledge and deepened my personal faith.

In the fall of 2010, I entered the Masters of Divinity Program at San Francisco Theological Seminary. The school had a unique living situation that was an intentional community. We cooked meals together, prayed for one another, and supported each other.

We were all in different phases of seminary, but the seven of us were a community that grounded my seminary life. We spent long nights discussing theology and our own struggles with faith, intermingled with shared meals and sing-alongs. After my first year of seminary I spent a year working with Asheville Youth Mission, a non-profit based in Asheville, NC creating mission opportunities for youth to engage with those on the margins of society. I was so drawn by this program that I spent a year and a half between my second and last year of seminary working for them. The last semester of seminary I took a class called “God and Human Suffering”, that challenged me to look at this death and see how my faith worked now that death was a part of the narrative. It was after this deeply challenging work that I found myself grounded in my faith, my understanding of God in the world and the importance of being Christ’s hands and feet in all I did. Throughout my life I have found myself in a variety of different ministry contexts, gaining a great deal of experience as well as knowledge along the way. Currently, I have felt deeply called to put roots to my ministry, to be grounded in a community and let God move through me and to encounter where God is already at work in a community. I feel drawn to the liturgical community of the church because it is this tradition of PC(USA) that has been the foundation of my ministry and formed me into the minister that I am, and hope to be.

• Tell us about your ministry experience? Coordinator, Committee on Ministry and Committee on Preparation for Ministry, Charlotte Presbytery. (January 2016 - December 2016) Stakeholder in Visioning Initiative of Charlotte Presbytery. Representing interests of younger generations in the future strategic planning of the Presbytery. (2016) Volunteered support of ministry to Youth and Families at Myers Park Presbyterian Church in Charlotte, NC. (January 2016 - December 2016) Chaplain Resident, Carolinas Medical Center. On-Call coverage as well as daily response for pediatric, psychiatric, adult and intensive care units. Charlotte, NC. (2014-2015) Chaplain Intern, David Grant Medical Center, Travis Airforce base. Daily hospital response as well as coverage for psychiatric and adult intensive care units. Fairfield, CA. (2014) Mission Immersion Director, Asheville Youth Mission. Programming support for 13 different service agencies partnering with youth ages 12-21. Asheville, NC. (May 2012 – August 2013)

• What are your hopes for ministry and why, in particular, are you interested in this position? I have endless hopes for ministry. But currently I feel the best way to express my hopes can be in the quote by St. Theresa of Avila “Christ has no body now on earth but yours.” My hopes for ministry are to embody the love of Christ in all that I do, and to encourage, create, and foster space for others to do the same. I am interested in this position because of the age group and the potential that I can see within what is offered. Young adults are a very important demographic in the church that is often overlooked. I feel that at this age it is a very important time to ask tough questions, delve deeply into questions of faith, and find how that faith can be put into action with social justice opportunities. Their lives are changing or have changed in dramatic ways and navigating how faith plays a role is very important.

www.nashvillewpc.org

Rachel Pence, continued...The location of this church and the energy behind young adults is very exciting to me, and leaves me bursting with ideas.

• What ideas do you have to grow this ministry?First, I would want to find ways to plug this ministry into what is going on already in the church, in order to continue to foster community and participation in your small group ministry as well as the outreach already established. Some other ideas that I would love to try would be a young adult book club, beer and theology, and outdoor excursions such as hiking and camping to establish a connection with creation. I noticed that you are an earth care congregation, and I would love to connect that aspect of your community with the young adults. I would love to create and encourage mission opportunities. Living in a city there is a unique opportunity to engage in dialogue and grow in our faith while experiencing what is happening right in our back yard. Above all, I would want to create space for dialogue. The world we are living in is struggling, and there is a constant question of how do we respond? How do we live out our faith in the face of the current state of our world? There are few spaces where these tough questions can be asked and wrestled with, and I would hope to grow this ministry to create those spaces and allow space for those questions.

• How would you be a good fit for this position? As a young adult myself, I am passionate about young adults in the church. I have been searching for a call that would allow me to be creative, as well as engage with the foundational church that has called me into ministry. I would be very excited to work in a multi-staff church, as I work very well on a team and appreciate diverse personalities especially in a ministry setting. Above all, I have a lot of energy for the church, and this position would place me in a demographic that I feel has lost its energy. I want to delve into why that is, and how we can continue to be the church, and what church looks like as a young adult.

Life at WestminsterRachel has the enthusiasm, organizational skills and outgoing personality that will serve her well in ministering to our young adults and young families.
