Students face huge TAFE feesBY SAMANTHA ROBIN

STUDENTS planning to take courses atChisholm Institute’s Mornington Peninsulaand Frankston campuses next year are facingdrastic fee hikes.

The increases in fees — flowing from thestate government’s budget cuts to TAFEs —may put courses out of reach for somestudents.

Under the previous system, some courseswere underpinned by government subsidiesand capped at an annual fee of $2500 astudent.

This means courses without 2013 resourceallocation under the Victorian Training Guar-antee — including business administration andlegal services, sport and fitness, food and meatprocessing, marketing, liberal arts, ceramics, areas of hospitality and events — are facingincreased fees or have been axed.

The cost of obtaining a diploma of beauty

therapy next year at Chisholm’s MorningtonPeninsula campus has surged from $2500 to$7110.

Fee hikes at the campus include the diplomaof children’s services (rising from $2500 to$3082) and the diploma of conservation andland management (rising from $2500 to$3500).

Chisholm Institute chief executive officerMaria Peters said courses without sufficientresources may be offered as fee-for-servicefrom next year, but would be determined bythe number of enrolments.

Many courses at Frankston are also facingfee hikes. Fees have risen for the advanced dip-loma of building design - architecture (from$2500 to $4170), the advanced diploma ofbuilding surveying (from $2500 to $5500) andthe advanced diploma of justice (from $2500to $3650).

A Chisholm Institute spokeswoman said theinstitute had tried to keep fees as low as

possible. ‘‘In courses where there are highnumbers of disadvantaged students, and forfoundation courses such as VCE, we have keptfees low,’’ she said.

‘‘Areas where the cost of courses hasincreased significantly are courses where thegovernment’s subsidy has been reduced.

‘‘Our decision on what to charge for thesecourses was based on market value and com-petition with other tertiary providers. Theymay seem like big increases but we have tocover the costs of providing the course.’’

The spokeswoman said some Chisholmcourses — including certificate III and IV inhospitality, certificate I in kitchen operationsand ceramics — would not be offered nextyear. ‘‘If students were in the middle of com-pleting a course they will be able to access thetraining to complete this course.

‘‘I think everyone understands there havebeen cuts to the TAFE sector and we need towear it.’’

Senior students from Nara University High School

in Japan visited Western Port Secondary College

to gain a taste of life on the Mornington Peninsula.

Students from both schools shared activities and

experiences. The Japanese students enjoyed an

old-fashioned Australian sausage sizzle and

games of basketball and Australian rules. They

also taught the Western Port Secondary students

the art of origami and Japanese calligraphy.

Re: The silent majority was just thatIt’s been a very busy six weeks since my election, and I want to thank everyone who has madecontact with me since becoming a councillor forBriars Ward.

As well as learning all about the role andresponsibilities of a councillor, I’ve been meetingwith many members of the community to discusstheir issues and ideas for the ward.

I live in Mt Eliza, and have been on the Morn-ington Peninsula the vast majority of my life.

I’ve also lived in Mt Martha and Mornington, and will represent the best interests of BriarsWard and the peninsula tirelessly.

I know I have very big shoes to fill.Leigh Eustace was a damn-hard working

representative for Mt Eliza, who achieved a greatdeal for the village and the area during his time on

council. I’m sure he’ll continue to play an active rolein the community.

I am excited about working with my fellow BriarsWard councillors Anne Shaw and Bev Colomb, andthe rest of the council, to deliver many great projectsboth for our ward and the shire.

You are always welcome to contact me via email [email protected] or call/text0428 273 947 if you want to get in touch.

Cr Andrew Dixon,

Mornington Peninsula Shire

Food for allI am writing to thank everyone in our communitywho took part in our 2012 blanket appeal.

This year we received a record 414 blankets andknitted rugs.

Our appeal received a great boost and supportfrom Centro Mornington which collected 209 blan-kets for us, together with a quantity of scarves andjumpers.

Also, as a result of a partnership between CarrumDowns Community Bank, Bendigo Woollen Mills,Janice Bartlett of Needy Stitches and severalbranches of Bendigo Bank on the Mornington Penin-sula, wool was turned by at least 300 knitters into

about 150 blankets together with beanies, scarves, mittens and baby clothes.

Re: Quarry sell-off plan attackedAs a new resident of Mt Martha, one of the majorfactors influencing our decision to move toMt Martha was the beautiful coastline and serenebush surroundings of this area.

The Mt Martha quarry cliff face and theadjoining land forms part of the beauty of thisnatural environment.

It is where many species of native flora and faunacan be found. As such, the quarry area and itsnatural beauty should be protected against anyhigh-rise developments being proposed byMornington Peninsula Shire Council.

This would not only destroy the natural environ-ment, but it would be lost for future generations.

It is important that as residents we protectwhat we have and enhance this land byleveraging the natural features, such as thewetlands and making this area into a nativebushland park.

Lucky escape: Jane andHeath Davidson inspectthe remains of theirRosebud home.Picture: Daryl Gordon

A ROSEBUD man and his mother andfiance were lucky to escape with their liveswhen their home burnt down on December 1.

Heath Davidson, 25, first captured theattention of the Weekly after he turned hislife around at the Fight 4 Life youth club —overcoming a lifestyle of partying and drugsto become a promising wheelchair boxer.

Just days after having his picture takenfor the cover of the Weekly, Mr Davidsonand his fiance Megan were asleep when shewas woken by the sound of shattering glass.

‘‘It was an intense wake-up call onSaturday morning. My girlfriend woke upbecause she heard the front door shatter. Sheyelled out ‘somebody is breaking in’ and ranout of my room into a room full of flames.

‘‘By the time she got my wheelchair therewere flames at the door . . . we got mum andthe dogs out and watched it burn. Theflames were so intense and it was so loud. The neighbours had called the fire brigade;they said they had been calling out for fiveminutes.’’

Fire investigators have not determined thereason for the fire but told the family it had

started on the front porch. ‘‘There werewaves of flames coming across the roof. Thefire marshall said he would have given usonly another 20 or 30 seconds in the house.’’

The family contacted their insurancecompany and were disappointed to discoverthe house had been over-insured and thecontents under-insured. Although the housewill be replaced, less than half the family’sproperty will be. ‘‘I’ve lost everything. Allmy gym gear, my sports chair. Mum is dev-astated — it is the little things, like photos ofthe kids and wedding photos.’’

Since the fire, Mr Davidson has been stay-ing at a friend’s house in Chelsea and next-door neighbours in Rosebud offered theirholiday home to his mother, Jane Davidson.

‘‘Everyone has been so generous andoffered as much as they can but at the sametime I don’t want to take it. I feel awkwardtaking money from people.’’

The family are moving into a rental prop-erty in Rosebud until their house is rebuilt. If you would like to help the Davidsons, contact the Weekly at [email protected].

Firemen claim cutsaffect water accessBY ALECIA PINNER

LOCAL firefighters say government fundingcuts are impacting front line services includingtheir ability to quickly access water to put outfires.

The Weekly last week spoke to firefightersfrom the south-east region and sighted a CFAinternal email confirming that a roll-out ofnew couplings used to connect water hoses tofire trucks had not been completed by the CFAdue to funding pressure.

Frankston resident and United FirefightersUnion spokesman Geoff Barker said thismeant the new coupling hoses often did not fittrucks of neighbouring brigades and all sta-tions didn’t have the adaptors provided by theCFA as a ‘‘Band-Aid solution’’.

‘‘Frankston, Mornington and PattersonRiver have the Stortz coupling hoses but MtMartha, Mt Eliza, Langwarrin and CarrumDowns don’t. We shouldn’t have to fiddlearound and look for these adaptors,’’ he said.

Some stations had trucks with and without

the new couplings, another firefighter told theWeekly. ‘‘The hose doesn’t fit the truck and wehave no water,’’ he said.

A CFA spokeswoman said the couplingsroll-out was pre-funded and expected to becompleted by 2020, with the south-east areaahead of schedule and expecting completion in2016.

District 8 operations manager Trevor Owensaid funding cuts had not affected firefightingcapability.

‘‘CFA has instituted a program to updatehose couplings across the southern metropol-itan region. This phased project has been fun-ded. Adaptors have been issued during thetransition,” Mr Owen said.

Local career firefighters rallied outsideFrankston MP Geoff Shaw’s office last Tues-day week, asking for his support in their callfor the state government’s $66 million fundingcuts to CFA and MFB to be reversed.

Mr Barker delivered a report to Mr Shawciting examples of how front-line services hadbeen compromised by the cuts.

BALNARRING Primary School pupils took to theskies last week as they flew handmade kites.

The school’s 400 pupils were supplied materialto make the kites by the Presentation and FamilyCentre and Wilderness Centre in Balnarring andthe kites were flown in the centre’s grounds.

There was enough wind to lift the kites high intothe sky, much to the delight of the pupils.

Presentation and Family Centre operations

manager Ishti Turner said it was a fantastic day.‘‘It was lovely to see the children enjoying

nature,’’ she said. ‘‘Families came down and had asausage sizzle and there was terrific communityinvolvement.’’

The centre provides respite accommodation andsupport for disadvantaged families. Set on 19 hec-tares in Balnarring, it hosts six cottages and awilderness area, with a focus on sustainability.

Ramping up a ferry protestBY SAMANTHA ROBIN

Pier protest: Kevin Birkett, Karen Hiam, FrankCutuli are angry there is no wheelchair access toparts of the Stony Point pier and ferry.

Picture: Daryl Gordon

THREE wheelchair-bound Western Port resid-ents staged a peaceful protest at Stony Pointpier last week.

Kevin Birkett, Karen Hiam and FrankCutuli say they are being discriminated againstas they cannot access parts of the pier or catchthe ferry to Cowes as there are no ramps.

‘‘Every summer we stage this protest in thehope that eventually the pier and the ferry willbe wheelchair accessible,’’ Mr Birkett said.

‘‘There are more and more of us in wheel-chairs and we believe we should have the sameaccess as everyone else. We would really likethe opportunity to catch the ferry every nowand again but at the moment we don’t havethat option.’’

Mr Birkett, who has cerebral palsy anddoesn’t drive because of his condition, said heand his friends had limited options to get tothe other side of the bay. ‘‘Our only otheroption is to get a taxi over there which is a$300 trip each way.’’

Although Mr Birkett receives a discount onthe fare because of his disability, he said it wasstill a huge expense. ‘‘We have friends inCowes and would love to be able to visit them

more often. It’s very expensive, but we don’thave any other options.’’

The pier is managed by Patrick Ports, onbehalf of the state government, and InterIsland Ferries operates the ferry to Cowes.

A spokeswoman for Patrick Ports said acapital expenditure project to make the pierwheelchair accessible would need to beapproved and funded by the state government.

‘‘There is no wheelchair access in the cur-rent time,’’ she said. ‘‘Any works would needto be done in conjunction with works to theferry itself and would require governmentfunding. The changes to the pier would needto be safe in all weather, given the strong tidesand its exposure to the elements.’’

Inter Island Ferries spokesman FrankDenvir said while the ferries catered for peoplewith a disability, they could not be accessed bythem safely from the pier.

‘‘We can get people from A to B quite easily, the difficulty lies in getting them onto thevessel. At low tide there can be as many as 35steps down to get onto the ferry, and thebottom step is always difficult because it isusually covered in sludge, making it extremelyslippery.’’

Mr Denvir said WorkCover only allowedferry staff to assist passengers when the wereaboard.

‘‘I think it is unfair and unreasonable thatpeople in wheelchairs aren’t able to access thepier or take advantage of our service,’’ he said.

Parks Victoria said the issue came underPublic Transport Victoria’s jurisdiction. PTVhad not responded to the Weekly’s request forcomment at the time of going to print.

The Penbank way

Pre-planning: Learning through fun and interaction.

Penbank is a school with a clear direction inhow it is moving into the 21st century interms of planning and teaching pedagogy.

Penbank vice-principal Brenda Karnowskisays the school is fortunate to have a philosophythat was developed in the early years when it wasa small community school, and that it is stillfundamental to all that is done at the school.

‘‘It values a learning environment wherechildren understand the world around them byexploring and inquiring and where expectationsare high, but clear and meet the personal needs ofeach individual child.

‘‘At Penbank we are committed to using thepedagogy developed by Walker Learning, whichdraws heavily from international research,’’ MsKarnowski said.

‘‘It recognises that children require a mix offormal instruction, as well as some choices —even though the choices are carefully guided andscaffolded by teachers.

‘‘All teaching and learning is intentional andplanned with learning goals shared with studentsand pre-planned by teachers.’’

Ms Karnowski said nothing free or unplannedwas undertaken at the school and no subject or

skill was overlooked or avoided. ‘‘We plan withregard to the new Australian Curriculum Frame-work and project ahead yearly by the termand more specifically fortnightly learningintentions,’’ she said.

‘‘Weekly task sheets and individual plans forspecific children provide further structures.

‘‘In all, it requires teachers to be involved incontinuous thinking and discussion withintheir teams.

‘‘Our aim is to provide the best program forchildren, one that meets their needs in anengaging learning environment.’’

Back into the furnaceAs the mercury rises, authoritiesare urging residents and holidaymakers in Frankston and on theMornington Peninsula to dotheir bit in fighting the summerfire risk. SAMANTHA ROBIN andALECIA PINNER report.

Be prepared: Baxter fire brigade captain Angus Mair with sisters Molly and Libby at a recent open day at the fire station which highlighted fire safety prevention.Picture: Gary Sissons

Fire Services Commissioner Craig Lapsley isalready warning residents and visitors toFrankston and the Mornington Peninsula to

be prepared for bushfires this holiday season.‘‘The Bureau of Meteorology is expecting

temperatures in the high 30s and low 40s thissummer, with overnight temperatures sometimesonly dropping to 20 degrees before rising again,’’Mr Lapsley says.

‘‘In these temperatures grassland and bushlanddry very quickly, including coastal scrub and teatrees, which creates fuel for fires.

‘‘People need to make themselves aware of thelocal conditions — they can pick up informationon fire preparation from visitor informationcentres or from the CFA website.’’

While it may have felt like a cold winter,October and November were dry. Adding to thepotential for a dangerously hot summer, weatherand fire risk are returning to long-termestablished patterns, much like those thatpreceded the fires which struck in the summer of1997. The previous winter had been a soggy one.But that didn’t stop the flames roaring through400 hectares of the Dandenong Ranges andkilling three people.

Mr Lapsley says in hindsight that particularfire was comparatively small ‘‘but it had a very, very direct path’’.

High-risk bushfire areas on the peninsulainclude Red Hill, Main Ridge, Tuerong, ArthursSeat, Rosebud, Rye, Blairgowrie, Sorrento andPortsea. He advises day visitors to our region tobe mindful of often unfamiliar conditions.

‘‘Someone who lives in the city may not fullyunderstand the dangers associated with bush-fires. Simple things like knowing which way isnorth, understanding where you are and whichdirection the wind is coming from and knowingthe roads in and out are vital.

‘‘On the peninsula, fires are relatively small butthey still have the potential to do a lot of damage. The fires can also spread very quickly. In placeslike Red Hill, the fire might roll rapidly uphill, but even on the southern end of the peninsula itcould move quickly through tea tree and coastalscrub.

‘‘People shouldn’t underestimate fire at all. Wedon’t want to scare people away from the penin-sula — we just want them to understand thepotential dangers of fires.’’

Mr Lapsley also urges residents to not be com-placent and to ensure they have a fire action planwhich covers all household members and at whatpoint they would leave their home.

One of the simplest things residents could doto protect their property was to clear anythingthat could fuel a fire. ‘‘There are lots of different

parcels of land. The local council co-ordinatessome plans for blocks of land and reserves andalso has the ability to order clearances tolandowners if they consider a property to behazardous,’’ Mr Lapsley says.

The 10/30 rule, implemented in all but 21Victorian metropolitan municipalities after theBlack Saturday bushfires, allows home owners toclear vegetation around their property forbushfire protection without a planning permit. The rule applies to houses and structures built orapproved before September 10, 2009. Clearingfor new buildings must be considered throughthe planning permit process.

‘‘Lots of people still opt not to clear treesaround their property, but we have to get thatbalance of fire safety right. It is not aboutchopping down every tree, it is about a balanceof vegetation and managing fire safety.’’

He says rubbish dumping on vacant blockscreates a huge fire risk which shouldn’t be toler-ated. ‘‘Anyone who sees this sort of behaviourshould take the time to report it. It is a criminaloffence and police will be monitoring this.’’

Mr Lapsley says authorities learnt from theBlack Saturday disaster and an array of morereliable warning systems are being introduced.

This year, for the first time, Telstra mobilecustomers in areas threatened by a fire willreceive a text message alert. Previously, messageswere only sent to users whose billing address wasin the affected area.

In another initiative, Mt Martha is one of 39Victorian towns to take part in a pilot program

using sirens to warn communities of dangerduring the fire season.

The state government program involves sirensbeing used across 13 local government areas toalert communities to any significant emergencyor potential danger that could impact on them, such as fire, flooding or severe storms.

Mt Martha is the only peninsula town to beincluded in the pilot, while 28 will be in the fire-prone Dandenong Ranges.

‘‘The siren is a way of telling the community toseek further information by going to the CFAwebsite, looking at the conditions outside andbeing aware there is an emergency in the commu-nity,’’ Mr Lapsley explains.

Mt Martha residents should expect to benotified about the change in pamphlets to beplaced in their letterboxes. Information can alsobe obtained from the Mt Martha fire brigade.

‘‘There has been lots of commentary in MtMartha on the use of sirens but we are veryconfident this is a good trial of another way ofwarning the community,’’ Mr Lapsley says.

‘‘The siren isn’t the only way of alerting thecommunity, but is one way we can alert people. We learnt from the royal commission that on hotdays lots of people close the blinds, put theairconditioner on and shut off from the outsideworld, so sometimes just taking a look outsideand being aware of the conditions can make adifference.’’

Baxter fire brigade captain Angus Mair, who isalso the southern metro region fire safety officer, agrees that a fire plan is crucial. ‘‘Around Frank-

ston we’ve got a lot of bushland along creeks andgullies. That’s where the hazard is for residents,’’Mr Mair says.

Locals needed to prepare for fire as theweather was heating up. ‘‘We live in one of themost bushfire-prone areas. Even houses a coupleof rows back from the bush can still come underember attack.’’

Mr Mair suggests installing steel fly screen onwindows for radiant heat protection, rather thanfibreglass which embers can pass through, checking for gaps in the roof line and ensuring novegetation is against the house. Other safety tipsinclude cleaning up around the home and notplacing plant mulch against timber structures.

While firefighters will strive to protect peopleand property, Mr Lapsley says everyone has arole to play in summer safety. ‘‘The sharedresponsibility and shared obligation still has tobe there. People have to take responsibility forthemselves, their actions, their preparedness.’’

The fire danger rating of the day can beaccessed at cfa.vic.gov.au and on ABC radioand local community radio. The VictorianBushfire Information Line can be reached on1800 240 667 and a FireReady app can bedownloaded from the App Store. Forupdates on fires in your area, download theCFA App, and a brochure on landscaping forbushfire is available on the CFA website.Angus Mair can be contacted on0407 518 340 for advice on fire preventionand safety at home.

Creatures live on inscientific artworks

AMuseum Victoria touring exhibition, TheArt of Science: Remarkable natural historyillustrations, has arrived at Mornington

Peninsula Regional Gallery. The scientific art presentation from the state

museum’s seldom-seen collection of artworksand rare books also includes stunning imagesproduced with microscopes, macro-lenses andcomputers.

As exploration and science have expanded ourhorizons across time and space, the ability tocapture the likeness of all creatures, great andnot so great, has been a pivotal point in theincreasingly complex world of science.

Drawings of animals and plants, createdbefore the advent of photography, sometimesremain as the best visual record of life nowextinct. Scientific artwork was as important inthe 18th century as it is today.

Whether they fly, swim, crawl, wiggle or walk,we are endlessly fascinated and inspired bycreatures. The Art of Science showcases theuncommon beauty produced from 300 years ofexacting scientific observation and illustration. These rare books and hand-coloured plates are astranslucent and shimmery as the life they depict.

Dear Santa,

Hope you are not too busy and don’t have lots of children on the naughty list this year. I have been really good, and have just turned 4 years old. This year I will be watching Carols by Candlelight and will go straight to bed once it’s over so that I don’t miss you visiting our house. There will be milk and cookies for you, and carrots for the reindeer, last year I heard your bells in the sky when I was in bed. Wishing you a very Merry Christmas.

Rye reined in by unbeaten SharksBY MORGAN COLE

Over and out: Peninsula Old Boys’ Adam Jones plays a pull shot on Saturday. Picture: Gary Sissons

SORRENTO is poised to keep its undefeated record afterbowling out Rye for 133 on the first day of their MPCAProvincial Shield match on Saturday.

The Rye-Sorrento rivalry is always a spirited affair and anew twist was added with former Frankston Heat team-mates Darren Groves (Rye) and Nick Jewell (Sorrento)squaring off.

Rye chose to bat and was subjected to a fierce Sorrentoattack, falling to 6-78 on the way to being bowled out.

Sorrento coach Nick Davern was pleased with his bowl-ers’ performance.

‘‘We just seemed to get wickets at the right time,’’ Davernsaid.

‘‘We bowled really consistently, Davey Smith and A J[Andrew] King were both really good.’’

The Sharks were unforgiving with the ball, not allowingany big Rye partnerships to form, King and Smith havingno trouble in dismissing the Rye batting line-up. AaronVernon (26) made a late stand to help boost Rye’s tallybefore becoming one of Smith’s five scalps for the day.

After cleaning out Rye, Sorrento took up the bat facing12 overs against the Rye bowling line-up headed byGroves.

The veteran bowler wasted no time in shaking up Sor-rento, taking the wicket of opener Jedd Falck in the firstover giving Rye plenty of spark.

This was quickly extinguished by Jewell, who was look-ing very comfortable at the crease, quickly collecting 25not out before stumps. Sorrento will resume at 1-29 thisSaturday.

Peninsula Old Boys had a disastrous first innings againstHeatherhill, being bowled out for just 112 off 44 overs.

After a top-order collapse the Old Boys were staringdown the barrel at 5-20, before John Forrest (39) andWade Pelzer (25) managed to salvage the innings. Heather-hill finished 3-66.

In other matches, Baxter was set to bounce back afterlast round’s loss by chasing 180 against Mt Martha.

Crib Point is in the box seat after bowling out Moo-rooduc for 131.

Mornington set a tough task for Long Island, making283.

Mt Eliza cleaned out Ballam Park for just 89 and finish-ing 208 with four wickets in hand.■ Rosebud’s Danny Heylbut suffered a minor heart attackafter playing in an MPCA Sub District shield match atOlympic Park on Saturday.

The 37 year old was in a stable condition at FrankstonHospital on Sunday, for more see page 8 or go to peninsulaweekly.com.au.

TeamworkbolstersattackLANGWARRIN overcame its slowhome deck to amass 236 againstSeaford in its MPCA District Shieldmatch on Saturday.

Langwarrin is undefeated andwants to go into Christmas the sameway.

Captain-coach Mark Cooper (81)set the tone for Langwarrin forming afruitful partnership with fellow openerSimon McEvoy (41).

‘‘It was pretty tough going out there, they bowled pretty well,’’ Cooper said.

‘‘We had a pretty good stand in butthe ground was pretty slow. It was areally team-oriented effort.’’

Langwarrin batted the full 75 overswith its top and middle order standingup against the Seaford attack led byall-rounder Chris Cleef.

‘‘Cleef bowled quite well, his offspin gave us a bit of trouble,’’ Coopersaid.

Cooper is optimistic of winning butknows his in-form side will have towork hard to defend its total.

‘‘[Seaford] have some really qualitybatsmen like Damien Lawrence.

‘‘We just want to get out there andbowl our game.’’

Cooper attributes his team’s successto an improved club culture and abolstered support network whichincludes team manager Tim Harper, aformer coach at Melbourne and Caul-field cricket clubs.

He said the team had come closertogether this season and Harper waslike having ‘‘another coach’’ for theside. But his side faced a torrid secondhalf of the season with matchesagainst many of the strongest sides inthe competition.

‘‘[Those matches] will let us seewhere we’re at come finals time.’’

In other District Shield matches,Delacombe Park is primed to overrunHastings, the Blues being bowled outfor 98 in its first innings and Delacom-be Park finishing on 1-34 after the firstday.

Carrum has given Boneo plenty tothink about, making 233.

Baden Powell has made amends forthe previous round’s humiliating lossby setting a 325 target for Main Ridge.

Somerville had a pleasing firstinnings, surviving the full 75 oversagainst a powerful Pines attack andmaking 198.

Flinders holds all the cards againstFrankston YCW after blasting 307with Nathan Hunt (84) and TimClarke (64) leading the way.

— Morgan Cole

Red Hill bowlers put Rosebud under pumpRED Hill could stage a major upset against ladderleader Rosebud after bowling it out for 158 on thefirst day of play in an MPCA Sub District Shieldmatch on Saturday.

After winning the toss Red Hill, sent Rosebud intobat first in the sweltering conditions.

This proved to be a pivotal move and newlyreturned Red Hill bowler Ross Corfield snaredRosebud openers Darren Kerr and Greg McCannearly in the innings.

Red Hill captain-coach Simon Dart (4-34) playeda vital role in removing the Rosebud middle and tail

order and was delighted by his bowlers’ perform-ance. ‘‘It was really disciplined,’’ Dart said. ‘‘RossCorfield bowled really well for us in his return.’’

Rosebud captain-coach Jason Nagel commendedRed Hill’s attack and was pleased with his team’ssalvaged 158.

‘‘We lost a couple of important wickets early andthey started really well,’’ Nagel said. ‘‘They just tigh-tened the screws and made it pretty hard to score.’’

The match was overshadowed by the early retire-ment of Rosebud keeper Danny Heylbut, who leftthe field and was sent to hospital after having a

minor heart attack. He was in stable condition inFrankston Hospital on Monday afternoon.

In other Sub District Shield matches, Dromana seta modest 175 against Carrum Downs.

Pearcedale finished 1-29 at stumps after bowlingout Skye for 173. The Seaford Tigers have set a diffi-cult task for French Island, making 279 off the full75 overs, Tigers batsman Corey Hand (100) havinga day out.

Balnarring had a productive day at the crease with273 against Tootgarook.
