Drivers give new Link the tick

New dawn: The first traffic on Peninsula Link early on Friday. Picture: Gary Sissons

BY ALECIA PINNER

PENINSULA Link was opened to traffic at5.15 on Friday morning and by 9am the Morn-ington Peninsula was buzzing with motorists’stories of time saved in the morning peak.

The long-awaited 27-kilometre freeway con-nects Carrum Downs to Mt Martha.

A Lysterfield resident, who travelled to thepeninsula on Friday morning, said she slashed11 minutes from her trip but would use theNepean Highway if roads into Morningtonwere busy when students returned to school.

‘‘I added four kilometres to my trip becausethe freeway is not direct. I can imagine whenschool starts there will be a lot of traffic onBungower Road, Mornington-Tyabb Road andBentons Road because they all have single lanesinto Mornington,’’ she said.

A Carrum Downs man, who got on atFrankston-Dandenong Road, said he saved 10minutes from his usual trip on the Moorooducor Nepean highways to Mornington.

‘‘Both are a nightmare, so I love PeninsulaLink,’’ he said.

A Mornington resident travelling to Dande-nong shaved 15 minutes from his trip.

At a surprise news conference last Wednes-day, Premier Ted Baillieu announced the open-ing of the freeway.

He said 50,000-60,000 motorists wereexpected to use the road each day, removing 30per cent of traffic from major arterials such asthe Moorooduc and Nepean highways.

The Weekly understands that as a result ofthis prediction, VicRoads is exploring the viab-ility of narrowing or closing lanes and loweringspeeds on the Nepean Highway.

Mornington Peninsula Shire has implemen-ted a traffic management plan for the Morning-ton Peninsula Freeway following the openingof Peninsula Link.

The shire-commissioned Peninsula LinkImpacts Study conducted last year found thatwhile no significant traffic change patternswere expected to emerge, queuing at Jetty Roadonce Peninsula Link opened could be expectedas previous bottlenecks on the MoorooducHighway through Frankston and Moorooducwere bypassed.

Mornington Peninsula Shire mayor LynnBowden said Peninsula Link was expected tobring improved access to the peninsula for vis-itors, and improved cross-peninsula travel andtravel to the city for residents.

“The shire will have in place additional traf-fic measures on local roads on the southernpeninsula to be utilised in anticipation ofincreased traffic flow on Australia Day,” CrBowden said. Over the Australia Day weekend, the shire recommended McCrae and Rosebudresidents exited the freeway at either of the twoDromana exits to avoid potential congestion atJetty Road.

Peninsula Link is expected to cost $2.8 bil-lion over 25 years and will be maintained byLend Lease.

By Monday, the new freeway had alreadyexperienced its first road accident andfreeway walls and signage had been extensivelygraffitied.■ See pages 5, 7.

PICTURE: GARY SISSONSTree of life? How can Peninsula Link’s wind-activated sculpture[pictured] be titled The Tree of Life when it standsin an area of thoughtless devastation where livingtrees were cut down, many of which were homes toprecious wildlife. The ‘tree of death’, more like it.

The construction of Peninsula Link has causeddeath and destruction to beautiful flora and fauna, all to save humans a little time. I think of the sculp-ture as a tombstone reminding me of the loss. Whoelse is mourning with me?

LR Cater, Langwarrin

The so-called artwork on the new Peninsula Linkfreeway at the junction by the Peninsula PrivateHospital at Cranbourne Road on the border ofLangwarrin and Frankston East is a driver-distracting danger. I can see many rear-endersoccurring as drivers look at the moving head of thesculpture and are distracted among the trafficlights. I’ve already witnessed near-collisions due tothis sculpture.

I don’t know what I am going to do. I can’t affordmuch of anything these days. Well done to JuliaGillard! I voted for her because one of her pledgeswas to increase all these payments. Yeah right, andthey wonder why there are so many homelessand suicides.

SES and CFA teams from Frankston, Hastings and the Mornington Peninsula

travelled the length of Peninsula Link last Wednesday night. Frankston SES

controller Brian McMannis said it gave the emergency services teams the

opportunity ‘‘to have a look over the road before it opened’’. ‘‘That way if fires,

accidents or storm damage happens along the road we will know where we can

turn the emergency vehicles around. It was definitely worthwhile and it was

really interesting driving on a major freeway like that before it opened,’’ Mr

McMannis said.

Along with new freeway,a roadmap for tourismBY SAMANTHA ROBIN

MORE valuable tourism dollars areexpected to head down the newlyopened Peninsula Link freeway.

Mornington Peninsula RegionalTourism Board executive chairwomanTracey Cooper said Peninsula Linkwould make the peninsula moreaccessible for day trippers.

‘‘I think it is going to make it muchmore accessible for people who wantto come down for the day to explorethe wineries and beaches and ourmarketing campaigns will certainly betrying to attract that market.’

‘‘It will make the peninsula moreattractive for conferences, whichwould improve profitability mid-week.’’

Mrs Cooper said the tourism boardwould be monitoring visitor numbersover the next 12 months.

‘‘We will be assessing visitor num-

bers and talking with local businessesand event operators, but it will take ayear before we have those figures,’’ shesaid.

‘‘Accessibility is one of the keythings that makes a destinationattractive and it will also make it bet-ter for locals, including tourism oper-ators and business owners.

The tourism board would use exitnumbers for Peninsula Link on bro-chures and in other media as a way ofenticing visitors to different areas.

Mornington Peninsula Shire eco-nomic development manager ShaneMurphy said Peninsula Link wouldhelp attract more short-term visitors.

‘‘We are predominantly a short-stayholiday destination, so this will makeit easier for people to get here fromMelbourne, not just during summerbut all year round.

‘‘Our marketing will focus onattracting people during the winter

months and spreading the tourism dol-lar over the whole year.

‘‘We will endeavour to spread thebenefits across the whole peninsulaand will be working with the localtourism bodies and chambers toensure this happens.’’

Mr Murphy said the shire hadalready conducted extensive studieson the impact of the freeway, espe-cially relating to traffic congestion.

‘‘We think everything will be fine, but on popular beach days PeninsulaLink and other roads will struggle.

‘‘Our research has shown you canhave a one-off perfect beach daywhere everyone wants to come atonce, but the weather is variable sothis won’t be the case every weekend.

‘‘Our traffic teams will be monitor-ing this and economically we will bechecking with our local chambers andother businesses to find out whatimpact it has had.’’

Steel workers brace for tough road ahead

Uncertain future: BlueScope Steel worker Shane Burd weighs up his options after therecent announcement of job cuts. Picture: Wayne Hawkins

BY SAMANTHA ROBIN

‘If there aren’t enoughpeople willing to takevoluntary redundancies, there will be forcedredundancies.’ —Shane Burd

AS the Hastings community dealswith the impact of more job losses,BlueScope Steel workers are weighingup their options.

Last week, the company announced170 jobs would be shed over the nextfew months, leaving many workerswith uncertain futures.

Shane Burd, who has been with thecompany 20 years, said it was a ‘‘prettygrim’’ atmosphere at the plant.

‘‘We all watch the television andread the newspapers, we know whatthe job market is like out there forpeople in the manufacturing industry,’’he said.

‘‘The last job cuts were hard, but Ithink these ones are even harder.’’

He said there were still workersfrom the last round of redundancieslooking for work.

‘‘People think they can just go andget a job on the mines, but the miningindustry can afford to be picky.’’

Mr Burd said more people wereleaving the peninsula to find work.

‘‘I moved here for work and built alife for myself and my family here, ashave a lot of the workers. My wife isconcerned about me but she is alsoconcerned about the other families. Alot of the people have become close

friends and socialise outside of work sowe are all feeling it at the moment.’’

Workers had been offered voluntaryredundancies, with expressions ofinterest due by Friday this week.

‘‘It’s not an easy process, people haveto discuss it with the family and speakto the banks as well as looking at theiremployment prospects. If there aren’tenough people willing to take volun-tary redundancies, there will be forcedredundancies.’’ Mr Burd said he had

seen the workforce at BlueScope dropfrom 2500 people when he started atthe plant, to less than 500, which hashad a flow-on effect for Hastings.

‘‘There is a lot of concern aroundemployment opportunities, some ofthese people have been out of the jobmarket for 20 or 30 years. Even thoughthey are highly skilled, their skillsaren’t transferable so they can’t just goand get another job easily.’’

Hastings MP Neale Burgess said hehad written to Premier Ted Baillieu toseek urgent assistance for affectedworkers.

‘‘While BlueScope has confirmedthat it has taken this course of actiondue to a reduction in worldwidedemand for steel, the announcement isbitterly disappointing for the workersthemselves and our local community.’’

Mr Burgess said the Port of Hastingsdevelopment was now even more vital.

‘‘It has never been more importantthat the development of the Port ofHastings be fast-tracked, and that isexactly what the Coalition governmentis doing.’’

Link paves the wayfor home buyersBY MELISSA WALSH

MORNINGTON Peninsula real estateagents say Peninsula Link is already attract-ing potential buyers into the local market.

They say prices have remained stable in thepeninsula and there was increased interestfrom non-locals.

Honor Baxter, director of Honor BaxterMornington, said the newly opened freewaywould continue to make the area, particu-larly the coastline, more desirable.

‘‘We already have a lot of people that com-mute and it will make it a lot easier for peopleto work in the city and live down here,’’ MsBaxter said.

‘‘I think we have seen an effect alreadybecause prices haven’t dropped along thiscoastline as much as they have in other areasof Melbourne. It has remained fairly consist-ent. A lot of the agents in Melbourne are say-ing prices have come down by 20 per cent buthere our prices have dropped only by about5 per cent. I think it will have a strong effect,

particularly in the Safety Beach and sur-rounding area, as it’s easy to jump on thefreeway from there.’’

Blue Water Bay Mornington directorKathy Netherclift said she had alreadynoticed a change of demographic.

‘‘It used to be locals but now about 30 percent more inspections are by of out-of-towners. We have noticed this increase in thepast two months. More non-locals are buy-ing into the area with the easier access backto town. Our activity level has picked up somuch in the past three months and we arehoping that with the new confidence, pricesare on the rise again,’’ Ms Netherclift said.

Kayn Luff, director of Conley Luff Morn-ington, agreed there had been a markedincrease in activity in the past few months.

‘‘We have noticed increased activity of citybuyers to the area. It [Peninsula Link] hasstabilised the prices here. The full extent ofthe effect it will have is hard to tell but thereare more buyers here and a bit more confid-ence in the market,’’ Mr Luff said.

Police on the prowl inpeninsula crackdownBY SANDRA BULL ‘Remember that driving

takes 100 per centconcentration, 100 percent of the time.’

—Robert Hill

A SIX-week police blitz has kickedoff on the Mornington Peninsula intime for the busy Australia Dayweekend.

Operation Limit — launched onFriday — is aimed at reducing roadtrauma, which accounted for 75Victorian road deaths in the firstthree months of last year.

The operation runs across 16high-risk police service areas thathave had increased road trauma dur-ing this period over the past fiveyears.

The areas include MorningtonPeninsula, Dandenong, Casey, YarraRanges, Melbourne and Geelong.

Assistant Commissioner for RoadPolicing Robert Hill said thefirst three months of the yearwere high-risk periods for roadtrauma in the state and it was

important not to become compla-cent.

“While we’ve just recorded thefifth consecutive record low roadtoll and we’re currently 11 below thetoll compared with the same timelast year, we know how quicklythings can change,” Mr Hill said.

During the operation, police fromthe highway patrol, road policingdrug and alcohol section, heavyvehicle unit and solo unit will runbooze/drug buses and satellitepatrols, BlueNet police cars withautomatic number plate recognition,

on- and off-road motorcycle patrolsand speed checks.

The focus will be high-riskoffences that are known to contrib-ute to road trauma — speeding, impairment (drink and drug drivingand fatigue management), driverdistraction and seatbelts.

“We know when people headhome from holidays they start think-ing about returning to work andschool and sadly these distractionsoften manifest in tragedy on ourroads,’’ Mr Hill said.

“Remember that driving takes100 per cent concentration, 100 percent of the time.’’

He advised drivers planning to usethe newly opened Peninsula Linkfreeway to take their time.

“Familiarise yourself with theroad and be prepared for otherdrivers to be adapting to the newconditions too.”

Robinson said: ‘‘I have two brothers who havediabetes, so I know how important these camps arefor teenagers.

‘‘I want to inspire these young people and makethem feel that the world is at their feet.”

Diabetes camps give people the opportunity tomeet and form friendships with others who face thesimilar challenges associated with living withdiabetes.

These challenges include regular finger-pricktesting, four daily insulin injections (about 1460 ayear) or managing new electronic insulin pumptechnology.

The camps are organised by Diabetes CampsVictoria, a consortium which includes Diabetes Aus-tralia – Vic, the Royal Children’s Hospital andSouthern Health.

Hot and cold: Frank Chitty enjoys the forecasting challenge. Picture: Gary Sissons

Weather forecastera man for all seasonsBY LEE OPITZ

IT’S a tough job being a weather forecaster. Notonly are your predictions treated with a healthyscepticism, it’s likely there’ll be plenty of baggingif you get it wrong, and no recognition if you getit right.

Nevertheless, the Mornington Peninsula’s ownlong-range weather forecaster Frank Chitty sayshe enjoys the challenge.

A self-taught meteorologist, astrologist, physi-cist and cosmologist, Mr Chitty says he hasalways been fascinated by the sky and planets.

‘‘I remember when I was about three my fathergrabbing hold of me as I was going down theback steps of our house to stop me from fallingbecause I was too busy looking up at the moonand the stars,’’ the 78 year old recalled.

‘‘It goes way back. We’ve got scientists andastronomers in the family, and we found out thatwe were related to Charles Darwin.’’

Family circumstances prevented him from pur-suing formal studies, but as a boy he was fortu-nate to get some lessons through corresponding

two of Australia’s best — Inigo Jones, and Len-nox Walker and his son Hayden.

With an insatiable thirst for knowledge theyoung Frank studied and learned, fuelling hispassion for all things to do with the cosmos.

Like Jones and Walker, Mr Chitty believes theplanets, their magnetic fields and sun spots play amajor part in determining our weather weatheron earth. While others dispute the hypothesis, arguing only the relationship between the sunand the earth determines patterns, an 80 per centaccuracy for long-range predictions isn’t a badhit rate.

‘‘The more sun spots there are, the more parti-cles there are, more moisture forms, causing wet-ter weather. Right now, there aren’t a lot of sunspots,’ Mr Chitty said.

In 1963, he published his first prediction inThe Age, and later appeared in The Sun. Fam-ously, two years before the 2000 Sydney Olym-pics Mr Chitty predicted rain would fall on thethree days before to the opening ceremony, andthe exact temperature on the day (19 degrees).

In 2001, he predicted Australia’s 10-year

drought, saying it would peak in 2008. He saysthere will be another in 2016 that will last threeor four years and by 2035, the planet will begin acooling period. For the rest of this year, it will bea drier winter and a wetter than normal spring.

Nowadays he’s a favourite with brides hopingto pick a perfect day for their wedding and farm-ers planning the best time to plant their crops.

‘‘I don’t do it for money. I just enjoy the chal-lenge,’’ Mr Chitty said.

Hospital forced toextend bed closureBY SAMANTHA ROBIN

FEDERAL government funding cutbackshave prompted Frankston Hospital totemporarily close some of its short-stay bedsto save cash.

Peninsula Health spokesman John Jukessaid the hospital was being prudent aboutsaving funds.

‘‘This is an extension of our regular Christ-mas closure and is a direct result of thesavings program,’’ he said.

Mr Jukes said the hospital closed its short-stay beds every year over the Christmasperiod and usually reopened them in January. This year they will remain closed until Easter.

‘‘We are putting a number of smaller sav-ing measures in place in order to meet thenew targets,’’ he said.

‘‘These beds are only used for people whohave to spend a very short time in hospital.’’

He said the bed closure would not sacrificepatient care.

‘‘In order to get people through the emer-

gency department more quickly, we will usethe adjacent Frankston Medicentre, whichbulk-bills.

‘‘We will also be ramping up our Hospitalin the Home program.’’

Mr Jukes hoped the short-stay bed closurewould save enough money for the hospital tomeet its new costing requirements.

‘‘If we can’t save enough money with thesemeasures we will have to look at otheroptions,’’ he said.

While exact figures are yet to be con-firmed, Peninsula Health may lose up to$4.86 million in funding this year.

Mr Jukes has said there would be no staffreductions as a result of the budget cuts.

State Health Minister David Davis saidlast week that the changes to the fundingallocation would put additional pressure onhospitals. “Anyone who has seen new sub-urbs growing virtually overnight in our outermetropolitan growth areas will acknowledgethe absurdity of the claim that our popula-tion has dropped.’’

Health aware: Troy Westley, pictured with his wife Lorna and six of their their seven children, keeps the family’smedical records up to date. Picture: Daryl Gordon

Help in a heartbeat, thanks to a new appBY SANDRA BULL

DEDICATED dad Troy Westley’s concern for hisfamily resulted in him creating an innovative freeapp to help people protect their loved ones —and themselves.

‘‘CareMonkey is like the Facebook of familyhealth and safety, but more secure,’’ the Mt Elizaresident said.

‘‘Our mission is to make people safer by shar-ing health information.’’

Mr Westley was running the Victorian regionof Google ‘‘when I realised I wasn’t doing a goodjob of looking after my family’’.

‘‘I was going through the filing cabinet at homeand pulled out my stepson Taylor’s asthma plan.I thought, what’s the use of it being there — itshould be given to people who may need it.’’

Mr Westley and wife Lorna have seven chil-dren between them, aged from 19 years to 12months. One of them, Bailey, 13, has four allergytriggers, including penicillin.

By storing Bailey’s health details in CareMon-key’s secure database, they can choose to share it

with people who may need to know about hisallergies.

While it’s not a full health history, key inform-ation such as allergies, medication, safety alertsand instructions, emergency contacts andimmunisation records can be stored and sharedwith people who may need these details in anemergency. These include sports coaches, col-leagues, parents holding sleepovers and schools.

People without health conditions can stillbenefit from the web-based technology.

A keen cyclist, Mr Westley, rides weekly with agroup of fellow enthusiasts. ‘‘I realised if therewas an accident, none of them would know whoto call.’’

Many families with elderly parents also usedthe free service to keep track of often-changingmedication and medical conditions.

Mr Westley said the Australian Lung Founda-tion, Cystic Fibrosis NSW, Asthma Australia,The Epilepsy Centre and Crohn’s & Colitis Aus-tralia strongly supported the benefits offered bysecure, easily shared information to trustedcarers and had signed up as partners.

People with asthma, for example, can scanand upload their personal asthma actionplan as well as an asthma first aid poster from

Asthma Australia to assist carers in a crisis. To create a profile, go to caremonkey.com or

Swamp activisthails tribunal winBY SAMANTHA ROBIN

A DEDICATED activist for the TootgarookSwamp has had a win over the MorningtonPeninsula Shire at a Victorian Civil andAdministrative Tribunal hearing.

Rosebud resident Cameron Brownclaimed that a 41-dwelling development inRosebud West on the site of the swamp hadan invalid planning permit assigned by theshire.

The council originally applied to have theapplication struck out, which was rejected bythe tribunal.

Following the hearing on November 28last year, the VCAT ruled that by the end of2012 all works on the land should cease andthere should be no discharge of ground orsurface water from the subject land into Chi-naman’s Creek or the Tootgarook Wetlands.

It also ordered that works associated withthe subdivision and development of the landmust not recommence until a relevant plan-ning permit was obtained by the developer.

If a planning permit for the subdivision isnot issued by June 30, the owner will berequired to remove any existing services andinfrastructure and the land returned to itsoriginal state prior to start of development.

Later this month a hearing will decidewhat costs are to be awarded to Mr Brown, unless a satisfactory amount can be negoti-ated between both parties.

Mr Brown said it was a tremendous mile-stone for the community. ‘‘It goes some wayto returning the community’s rights to have asay on the development and exposes some ofthe many questionable planning practicesthat have been applied to the TootgarookSwamp precinct,’’ he said.

‘‘We will not allow this to continue, as ourlegal action has demonstrated and will bepressing for appropriate consequences.’’

The decision is expected to have implica-tions for the shire, which recently approvedthe wetlands to be nominated for Ramsarrecognition as an internationally importantwetland.

Ovo’s sound mancomes full cirque

World traveller: Former peninsula resident Sebastian Hammond with Cirque du Soleil at the Docklands.Picture: Angela Wylie/The Age

AT the age of 25, Sebastian Hammond has a jobthat most of his contemporaries can only dreamof. For the past year, he’s been head of sound forCirque du Soleil’s latest production, Ovo, whichdelves into the world of insects.

Hammond, who grew up on the MorningtonPeninsula and is a former Mt Eliza SecondaryCollege student, manages the sound for each per-formance, making adjustments where requiredaccording to variables such as temperature andcrowd size.

‘‘The atmosphere is always changing, and thetemperature and humidity, which always changedramatically, can affect sound,’’ says Hammond. The audience size makes a big difference to theacoustics too, he says. ‘‘The more full the big topis, it’s a lot drier and less reverberant. They’re allthings that we have to take into consideration.’’

Ovo is Portuguese for egg, and the produc-tion’s narrative is centred on an unhatched eggthat mysteriously appears in the insects’ midst, representing life cycles and reminding them oftheir own birth and development.

Hammond, whose uncle had a sound company

when he was growing up, was working as a free-lancer after finishing school when he heard thatCirque du Soleil was recruiting a new technicalteam for a resident show in Macau. After a‘‘stilted telephone conversation’’ and interviewwith a panel of five in Sydney, Hammond joinedthe Cirque du Soleil team as an entry-level soundengineer six years ago.

He credits his employers with helping him fast-track to his current position. ‘‘They’ve been verysupportive of young talent and people’s object-ives and where they’d like to go, and they’vegiven us the tools to reach those goals,’’ he says.

Performing an average of 10 shows a weekmeans the cast and crew have formed a kind offamily, according to artistic director Marjon vanGrunsven. ‘‘It’s really a community of 126 peoplein total that travel together,’’ she says.

For Hammond, a stint in Melbourne is a nicebonus. ‘‘To have the opportunity to join a showlike Ovo and to bring the show through myhome town is a real dream.’’

Ovo is on at the Docklands until March 24.— Annabel Ross/The Age

Patients and visitors are advised that parking may become diffi cult and changes to road access mayoccur. Additional time should be allowed to obtain a parking spot when attending appointments.

Patients and visitors are also encouraged to look into different modes of transport to the hospital such as being dropped off when attending appointments and visiting loved ones.

In addition to the changes occurring in the car park, the Dundas Street/ Hastings Road intersection will be also undergoing an upgrade with dedicated turning lanes and traffi c lights being installed. This will create a safer traffi c environment for those accessing the hospital from the Dundas Street entrance.

The intersection upgrade is expected to commence in early February and the completion of the second stage of the car park is scheduled to be completed by June 2013.

FEATURESTORY

A day that unites us allIt’s beer and barbies, mates andfamilies, new citizens, parades,

honours and flag waving. But arewe becoming more patriotic, or isAustralia Day just a day off work? The Weekly team asks residents

what it means to them.

Family fun: Terry Cox (centre), 76, will be running with nine family members in the Mornington Peninsula Australia Day fun run. Picture: Daryl Gordon

‘We’re not that different toeveryone else. Regardless ofthis image of the rugged Aussiebushman, 90 per cent of thepopulation live in the suburbs.’

— Les Littlejohn

Records show that the earliest celebrationto mark the arrival of the First Fleet inAustralia in 1788 was held about 30 years

later in Sydney. But it wasn’t until the country’s bicentenary

that the rest of us joined up for a national publicholiday on January 26 to commemorate ‘our’special day.

But just what does the day mean in a countrywhere flag waving and chants of ‘‘Aussie, Aussie,Aussie, oi, oi, oi’’ at sporting events areconsidered by many as the only acceptabledisplays of national pride? Or are we no longerembarrassed to say how great we are, and what afantastic place we live in?

A poll of passersby in Mornington andFrankston showed it is mostly the latter.

Morgan Sando of Bittern said that as a studentof history he had always loved this nation, ourfreedom and way of life. ‘‘To me, Australia Day ismore important than my birthday. My parentscame here as immigrants from India and Spainand when you see what is going on in the world, you know how lucky we are to be in a safeplace,’’ Mr Sando said.

‘‘I joined the army the day I turned 17 andtransferred to the navy when I was 19 because Ialways believed that it’s better to serve than beserved, and it was my way of giving back to anation for what it had done for me.’’

Asked to describe an Aussie, Mr Sandopromptly replied ‘‘purple’’. ‘‘One word. We aremulticultural,’’ he said.

Illustrating the point, new Australian citizensand friends English-born Niamh Pillinger andYazmine Lomax from Ireland say the day is achance to celebrate our national identity andembrace what makes us Australian.

The girls, who now live in Mt Martha andMornington, describe an Aussie as someone whois ‘‘nice, approachable and with a friendlyattitude’’.

‘‘It’s a Steve Irwin cliche. Everyone here is amate, very easy going and outdoorsy. I don’t han-dle the heat very well though,’’ Ms Pillinger said.

But Dromana resident Les Littlejohn said hedidn’t like the jingoistic tub thumping that goeson about being Australian.

‘‘We’re not that different to everyone else.Regardless of this image of the rugged Aussiebushman, 90 per cent of the population live inthe suburbs,’’ he said.

‘‘People go on about Holden cars, kangaroosand meat pies. John Howard used to go on aboutAussie mateship, does that mean Germans don’thave friends? Australians are just like everyoneelse; they raise families and work for a living. Iusually take it [Australia Day] as any other day.’’

But there are plenty of Australians who love tomark Australia Day, with communities aroundthe country organising activities, with neigh-bourhood barbecues, parades and fireworkdisplays among the favourites.

Flag-raising ceremonies, citizenship awardsand rousing renditions of Advance Australia Fair(hummed if not sung) round out the official partof the day.

City of Frankston Bowling Club embraces theday with gusto, with a flag-raising ceremony, lunch and concert. Member John Crook saidthere were 21 nationalities represented in theclub’s 250-strong membership, and it was keento attract more ethnic groups to get involved.

‘‘I think this shows that we are a microcosm ofAustralian society.’’

Perhaps a rare exception, Frankston Councildoes not organise events for Australia Day,instead holding the Waterfront Festival on theweekend prior. Many residents from Frankston, however, travel to the peninsula for AustraliaDay celebrations, including the popular streetparade in Mornington.

Mornington Peninsula Shire Australia Daycommittee chairwoman Anne Shaw said the shirehad increased its funding for activities in recent

years, in line with increased popularity in theday’s events. ‘‘More people are attending eventseach year and more and more sponsors andvolunteers are getting involved. The number ofpeople who come out on the day as a family withtheir kids is fantastic because we should all bevery proud to be in this great country,’’ Cr Shawsaid. ‘‘For me, one of the highlights is the citizen-ship ceremony. I am a sixth generation Austra-lian and I think it is a good time for us toremember that other than our indigenous people,we all came here. It is a great day to celebrate ourmulticulturalism and diversity and how lucky weare to live in a place that is peaceful and has somany opportunities.’’

Others, like 76-year-old Terry Cox of Rose-bud, look for a more novel way to celebrate.

Mr Cox will take part in a fun run from SafetyBeach to the Rosebud soundshell. And makingthis year’s effort particularly special, the formerOlympian and marathon runner will be joined byfamily members on the course.

‘‘I am absolutely a proud Australian, it is a veryspecial day for me,’’ he said. ‘‘Running is a teameffort in our family and this year there will be 10of us running together.’’

Social analyst David Chalke, however, believeswe still have a way to go and that while theAustralian flag can be found flying around theplace, our patriotism has plateaued.

‘‘There is less faith in politicians at the momentand that is contributing to the decreased interestin patriotism,’’ he said.

Mr Chalke of Tyabb said while we had neverbeen as patriotic as Americans, patriotism hadchanged over time.

‘‘It has increased since the self-loathing thatthere was in the Vietnam years and post-GoughWhitlam years. We’ve been top dog at the cricket

and we’ve had economic success over the yearsthat has built the sense of belief that we are thelucky country.’’

Mr Chalke said increased patronage at AnzacDay and Remembrance Day services was proofthat Australians were clinging to the past morethan ever.

Weekly reporter Brad McGrath says AustraliaDay becomes more significant when you areoverseas.

“It is honestly my favourite day of the year. There is nothing I enjoy more than having a bar-becue with a few mates and downing a few beers. With the hot summer sun shining down, youcan’t go wrong in a pair of shorts and thongs. It isa stark contrast to an Australia Day I celebratedoverseas. Staring out of the window while thesnow fell in London on January 26, 2009 mademe pine for home,” the Mornington residentsaid.

“A famous Australian pub in the United King-dom, The Walkabout, was just around the cornerso my friend and I ventured down. We immedi-ately felt at home, surrounded by intoxicatedmen in green and gold, girls shivering in theirskimpy outfits and VB flowing freely.

“Australia Day is the day of the year whenthere are no social barriers, no different classes.

‘‘We unite under the one banner. We standtogether under the Australian flag and celebratehow lucky we are to be living in such a fantasticcountry.’’

Juniors add fire to SteelersWESTERN Port Steelers men have secured a homefinal after the conclusion of their Country BasketballLeague home and away season.

But the Steelers women will have to wait on thisweekend’s results before they will know if they willplay a home final.

The men and women will have this weekend offafter the CBL granted the Steelers’ wish to have a byeas many of their CBL team members are playing at theEltham-Dandenong junior tournament.

It is on the back of these juniors’ performance thatthe Steelers have blossomed into a CBL force.

Western Port Steelers men’s coach James Langfordsaid the improvement of junior representative playersand budding CBL stars Luke Duskovic, Brendan Sandsand Brad Marshall had been startling.

‘‘The young guys have been doing well and holdingtheir own,’’ he said.

‘‘Luke was on in the last three minutes against

Churchill a couple of weeks back and stood up, scoredsome points and looked after the ball in the crunch tohelp get a vital win against one of the top twoteams.’’

The men secured second spot with a 73-40 victoryover Traralgon T Birds in their first season back in theCBL after a lay-off.

The women’s team includes seven junior representa-tive players from last season’s junior Steelers teams.

Steelers coach Marc Pirotta said Shannon Donnelly,Molly Palser, Rylee Geddes, Steph Abbot, AbbeyCongreve, Chloe Chalmers and Annie Kloppenborghad all shown great improvement during the CBLseason.

“All seven have made strong contributions to theteam’s success this season,’’ he said.

‘‘The junior girls in this team have really stepped itup compared to last season and realise that they arenot merely here to participate, but to actually compete

and to achieve. Different girls step up each week —and that includes the senior age players as well — butgirls like Abbey (Congreve), Shannon (Donnelly),Dodge (Molly Palser) and Annie (Kloppenborg) havereally shown big improvement and are holding theirown with the senior group.

“But what is most pleasing is seeing some of thesegirls selected to our Big V squad for 2013.

‘‘Dodge and Abbey made it through to the finalsquad and that really does show that Western Port hasa true pathway from juniors to seniors now.”

With the club having plans to enter a Big V YouthLeague women’s team in the next couple of years, aprogram like CBL is vital to achieving thisgoal.

“It can’t be forgotten that of our senior age group ofplayers, most of the girls have only just finished juniorrep in the past couple of seasons themselves and couldactually play Youth League now,” Pirotta said.

Gabriel toreturn?FRANKSTON Dolphins areon the verge of signing formerstar Russell Gabriel.

The ruckman last playedfor the Dolphins in 2011,when he finished runner-up intheir best and fairest, beforesigning with WAFL club EastPerth on a three-year deal.

But the 23 year old has quitthe Sharks and will return tothe area.

Several MPNFL clubs arealso speaking to Gabriel, whois working on being releasedfrom his contract at EastPerth.

Dolphins coach SimonGoosey was tight-lipped onthe prospect of Gabrielreturning to Frankston Ovalbut admitted he would be awelcome addition. The Dol-phins have retained the bulkof their list. Their main losseswere Kyle Martin (Colling-wood), Dylan Van Unen(Essendon) and LeighOsborne (Gold Coast).

In a further boost for theDolphins, former captain PaulKennedy, who took a year offto focus on basketball, is set toplay next season.

The respected leader hasbeen a standout on the trackfor the Dolphins.

‘‘He has been able to getthrough all the sessions,’’Goosey said. ‘‘He is a greatleader and the guys reallyrespect him and you could tellhe really missed the footy.’’

Kennedy played a handfulof games in the VFL Develop-ment League towards the tailend of last season.

The Dolphins have alsoadded Jordy Williams (East-ern Ranges), Ben Maynard(East Ringwood) and JackClausen.

A host of young stars fromthe Dandenong Stingrays havejoined the Dolphins, includingco-captain Jason Pongracic, who was surprisingly over-looked by AFL clubs.

The Dolphins also recruitedformer Collingwood rookieDaniel Farmer and BrisbaneLions’ Josh Dyson, whoplayed played one game underMichael Voss in 2011. ‘‘We’lldefinitely have more depth —we had more depth last yearand at one stage our develop-ment team looked like playingfinals,’’ Goosey said.
