A Challenging Winter Brings A New Spirit of Hope in the Building Industry This Summer
FROM THE COACH’S DESK

MONROE
ANN ARBOR
Creative Graphic & Web Designer
“There hasn’t been a Winter and Spring like this since I was a kid!” This was the chant of many a Western Basin Toledoan in 2014, but warm days with plenty of sunshine has brought a new spirit to the building trades. Thanks to Wayne Homes for a super Volume XL! They never stopped building all Winter—what a great team of building professionals.
Our staff has taken on a big challenge! We are building a “magazine of dreams”---not a baseball “field of dreams” but much in the same theme a highlighting of the remodeling team of Hire a Professional Today—here in Toledo. David Rumpf has graciously accepted the challenge to be our cover feature. Many businesses were offered this spot. Because of time, money, and priorities others have not stepped up like last year’s president of the “Pro Toledo Team.” Hope you enjoy his work. Thanks to the numerous members of the Hire a Pro membership team for supporting Dave and the organization.
Volume XLII will be coming out ASAP! It will highlight the new docks on Put-in-Bay, the team efforts of HPH out of Toledo, Shepherds Shoreline Construction of Sandusky, Westfield Electric of Gibsonburg, and Frontz Drilling of Wooster, Ohio. New sponsors like Bayside Comfort, Culligan Water of Fremont, Put in Bay Investments, and the Reel Bar of Put-in-Bay will also be highlighted.
We had a slow start but bring on the rest of Summer, the work, fun, and enjoyment of life in and around the Western Basin of Lake Erie and Toledo!!!
A great choice for additions or remodeling projects!

A Family Founded Business Providing Some Real Family/Community Amenities
Historically, I have always loved the personality of this popular eating and drinking establishment in Ohio. Founded in Columbus, in the German Village, by Max and Erma’s family and known for its’ “homemade” style I have always been attracted to it’s ambiance. There are over 60 Max and Ermas in Ohio, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and Indiana.
The first visit included talking on the table phones throughout the restaurant so you could connect with some friends at another table. Secondly, the waitresses were on roller skates! This was my first visit back in the 1980’s. The homemade meatloaf and real mashed potatoes were my favorite then but since have been dropped from the menu—probably too “old school” as I am!
Today Max and Erma’s at the Maumee, Dussel Drive location has become not only a great place for super food and excellent service, but also a place for community involvement. The managerial staff has a real knack for helping local schools, teams, and service organizations earn money for service projects. “Fundraisers and this community involvement have been a real fun thing for our Maumee location!” states the management staff.
During the last year, they have had an interior remodel that is fantastic!! The numerous televisions throughout the restaurant gives the sports buff some excellent opportunities to keep up with what is happening with their favorite team. I, myself, prefer the lunch special combining sandwiches, soups, and salads. Their freshly baked, still warm
chocolate chip cookies and “make your own ice cream sundaes” are my top favorites!
Be sure you stop by and enjoy the warm welcome all receive when opening the front door. I am sure you will not be disappointed!

HOLY TOLEDO IINot Only For Kids To Enjoy
Where else can you see hilarious clowns, dangerous BMX stunts, talented, exotic animals, highflying aerialists, and flexible contortionists all in one location for your entertainment pleasure? The circus, of course! The Toledo Shrine Circus puts on quite a show too. Two and a half hours of pure, childlike enjoyment, makes you feel and act like a kid again. Too old for the circus, you say? Take me, for example, I wanted to do something special for my 25th birthday. I wanted to feel like a kid again, so I got eight friends together and we all went to the circus. They all enjoyed themselves, even one of the moms. You are never too old for the circus despite what anyone tells you.
Since their first circus in 1952, Zenobia Shriners have presented an annual circus in Toledo. The Zenobia Shriners are a branch of a fraternity called Shriners
International. Shriners are based on fun, fellowship and the Masonic principles of brotherly love, relief and truth. In March 2014, they presented their 63rd annual Shrine Circus at the Seagate Centre in downtown Toledo for the enjoyment of all of Northwest Ohio and Southeast Michigan. There is a little bit of everything for the whole family to enjoy, even those young-at-heart.
This year, the famous Jordan World Circus provided an array of breathtaking acts. Semi-finalist from season 8 of America’s Got Talent, Chicago Boyz
Acrobatic Team made their appearance in the circus. There were also talented pink poodles doing tricks like the famous Olate dogs that won the 2012 America’s Got Talent contest. I’m partial to the bigger
animals like the tigers and elephants. Bo, the 27-year-old elephant, was one of my favorite acts. Close to that, were the aerialists and the dangerous BMX stunts that they show right in front of your face. It amazes me how someone can perform at such a dangerously high level.
So, even if you are 5 or 95, there is something for everyone at the circus. Go there sometime, you too may feel like a kid again!
To learn more about Zenobia Shiners and their next events, check out www.zenobiashiners.com. To get tickets to next year’s show, please check out www.zenobiashrinecircus.com or call (419) 661-5060.

An Incredible History of Family Love of Giving Frankenmuth, Michigan Something Special To Be Proud by Arnold Sutter
The story of The Bavarian Inn begins in 1888 when the Fischer family opened a hotel and restaurant along the Cass River in the “thumb” area of Eastern Michigan. It is a composite of miracles, dreams, and prayers answered. For all of us have experienced the “gemuethlichkeit” (hospitality) it is a memory that will last forever. “This business shall continue forever”, according to William “Tiny” Zehnder! As I ponder my totally enjoyable time, the Bavarian Inn experience, with the matriarch, Dorothy Zehnder, all the accolades of praise would not do justice to the warm genuine love that she has
given to all who work here at this beautiful resort. The village of Frank (area of Bavaria) en muth
(German word for courage) was settled by German immigrants in 1845. 2013 was the 125th year celebration of the Bavarian Inn which includes a restaurant with 12 German themed dining rooms as well as a resort Lodge with 360 rooms, convention center and 4 indoor pools including two water slides. Throughout the years, the family has developed new businesses, including the Castle Shops, Frankenmuth Cheese Haus, Covered Bridge & Leather Gift Shop, and Frankenmuth River Place Shops. Other Bavarian Inn operations include Grandpa Tiny’s historical working farm, and the Frankenmuth Motel.
“Family is everything”, states Tiny Zehnder! “Our creed is based on the values, mission, and purpose of the Bavarian Inn. One rule requires that everyone work outside the business to gain other experiences. Like every successful business, we are constantly evolving based on market demands, while staying true to my father’s vision,” says Bill Zehnder.
Family unity, perseverance and hard work, having fun along the way seems to be the secret
for Dorothy Zehnder (the 92 year old matriarch), who works 6 days a week managing the kitchen and then on Monday she schedules cooking with her grandchildren. What a woman! As the fourth generation assumes leadership positions in the corporation, they look forward to both upholding tradition and carrying the business forward to future generations. In 2013, 10 family members from three generations work in a very empathetic mode, carrying on the traditions of Tiny and Dorothy Zehnder’s dreams.
Please give the Bavarian Inn a call at 800-BAVARIA or connect with them on their website at www.bavarianinn.com. You will not believe your experiences!!!

A Hidden Gem On A Beautiful Beach In Fort Lauderdale, Florida
A visitor can easily miss this historic watering hole/restaurant/resort but not by water. Many of the huge yachts and tourist boats breeze by with a super vision of one of the real fun spots in the Fort Lauderdale Atlantic Ocean beach strip. To many of
the natives and tourists it may be the friendliest, warmest, yet most “laidback” resorts in Southwest Florida. You get a feel of Key West with all the palm trees and everything close by including: a hot tub, a beautiful pool, 2 bars, and a menu at the restaurant
that is tough to beat! I think I like the place because it reminds me of not only Key West, but Folly Beach, South Carolina, and Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island in the Western Basin of Lake Erie.
This was my third year to visit this “hidden gem” to relax, enjoy “snowbird” friends, and to be cordially served some of the best food on any beach in Florida. You can enjoy all of these amenities while watching the “coming and going” of some of the most beautiful international yachts porting in Fort Lauderdale.
The Flanin family have been the operating management of this fine resort, losing their popular patriarch in 2013. I met Pat Flanin three years ago and I share the loss of the missing spirit of his presence.

For Every Season, There’s a Reason To Visit the Marblehead Lighthouse
THE BUILDING OF HISTORY I
Latitude North 43.2 Longitude West 82.7Set your GPS and hit the road to the Marblehead
Lighthouse. Been there before? That’s why you came back! Never been there before? You are in for a pleasant surprise. With a backdrop of tall trees, the 65 foot tall white lighthouse, capped by a red top, hugs the rocky shoreline of Lake Erie. On calm days, it is a wonderful place to walk or sit on the rocks, the water gently slapping on the shore as the seagulls soar and the boats and ships pass by.
When the water is rough and the storms roll through, it is easy to understand that for almost 200 years, at this very spot, the lighthouse has served as a beacon of hope and joy for sailors seeking safe passage by the ominous, dangerous rocks of Catawba Island.
Footnote For Future Adventures1. Home of Lighthouse keeper, Benajah Wolcott
2 miles (+-) South of Marblehead Lighthouse. Complete restoration of stone home, furnishings, cooking utensils, and clothing.
2. Fresnel light, designed in France-Massive glass-faceted surface designed to refract, and redirect light-installed in the Marblehead Lighthouse in 1858. On permanent display in the lodge at Maumee Bay State Park. A must see!!!
3. Marsh land from Port Clinton to Maumee Bay State Park. Visit Crane Creek, McGee, Metzger, and Maumee Bay State Park. Home to Eagles and Hawks, plus hundreds of bird species that spend
time along the marshy shore of Lake Erie. You might notice that many of the land features have French names, thanks to the French explorers and trappers that explored this area more than 350 years ago.

THE BUILDING OF HISTORY IIKey West’s Finest Cuban Cigars
Key West, Florida is exactly 106 Miles from Havana, the birthplace of our cigar culture. Before Miami, before Hav-a-Tampa, and before Ybor City there was Key West.
In 1868, Vicente Martinez Ybor a Spainiard escaped Cuba after being accused for funding Cuban rebels during the Ten Years War. While working in Cuba he had learned of the cigar industry. He settled in nearby Key West, and opened a factory and started producing his Principe de Gales brand. By the early 1800’s, Key West had become the cigar capital of the world, producing tens of millions of cigars.
Spain, which still had control of Cuba until 1898, demanded little taxes for raw leaf material compared to, finished cigars. Therefore the product “Clear Havanas” was born. Clear meant free of Spanish tax, the tobacco was imported from Cuba, and rolled by Cubans in Key West. This is where the story of The Cortez Cigar Company begins.
Walter Sayers Lightbourn was born in 1861, in Key West, Florida. His family moved from the Turks Island. He grew up in the rich cigar culture of Key West, which employed 80% of the island at the time. He started learning the craft of blending and rolling tobacco. In 1881, Mr. Lightbourn had successfully started The Cortez Cigar Company, in which he employed over 300 rollers. Under the direction of Mr. Lightbourn, The Cortez Cigar Company rolled a million cigars.
At the height of production the Labor Strike of
1885, slowly diminished The Cortez Cigar Company. As soon as the labor strike had ended the infamous fire of 1886, wiped out the island and all of its cigar manufacturers including Cortez Cigars. Within three years, Mr. Lightbourn rebuilt the factory and started up production for Cortez Cigars. For the next decade, Mr. Lightbourn would go back and forth between newly independent Cuba and Key West.
As Cuba gained independence, he sought after the opportunity to purchase plantations, as he would eventually oversee and control the entire operation. On August 10th, 1906, Mr. Walter Sayers Lightbourn died at his plantation in Batabano, Cuba. After the death of Mr. Lightbourn, the factory was robbed and set on fire by the infamous Florida Keys gangster Dutchy Melville and his gang. Dutchy was famous for robbing cigar factories and torching them to hide the evidence. He was found guilty and sentenced on May 14th, 1908. A series of hurricanes devastated the island, and wiped away the last of the cigar manufacturers in Key West.
For over 107 years, Cortez Cigars Key West remained dormant until Ms. Marlene Carbonell, the great-granddaughter of Mr. Walter Lightbourn, appeared at the door to our store on Greene Street with treasures of a culture lost. She had an old cigar band from 1884 and an original Cortez Key West cigar box. On the inside cover of the cigar box the lithography depicted an erect Conquistador Hernán Cortés with the Aztec pyramids in the background.
Coincidentally, we had befriended a cigar maker
the previous year, with the boxes and the cigar bands we went off to the Dominican Republic to recreate Cortez Cigars Key West. As of today, we have the cigar bands identical to the original and are currently finishing the cigar boxes.
We created two unique blends. The “Conquistador” which is a very mild-medium cigar is made up of a Connecticut shade wrapper, and Dominican binder and filler. Making for a very light smoke with hints of nut and wood.
With 2014 already here, we will be releasing the second blend called the “Marquis” which is a very medium bodied cigar made up of an Ecuadorian sun-grown wrapper, a Dominican binder and Nicaraguan fillers. The cigar itself will be a very aromatic cigar with a rich oak flavor with hints of leather.
These cigars are available at our Greene Street Cigar location and coming in April will be available for sale on our website!! (www.greenestreetcigarcompany.com)
