Introduction

In this essay I will examine the use of the Pantomime costume and types

of British Pantomime theatre. It will show you the history of Pantomime.

There is 5 main of ideas in this essay. First, it will show you the types of

costume in Pantomime. Second, what kind of costume the Principal boy

and the Pantomime Dame wear it. Third, what did it look like the

Pantomime costume. It shows you basic Pantomime costume. Lastly, I’ll

show you how was it made these costumes. My essay is about Pantomime

costume.

History of Pantomime

The British Pantomime or (Panto and Mime) is famous in the UK, probably

back to the Middle Ages. And mix together the traditions of the Italian

"Commedia dell’ Arte, which is type of travel entertainment. It is a very

physical type of theatre that used music, tumbling, buffoonery, dance and

acrobatic. And the British Music hallway to produce the art form that is

Pantomime.

Costume

Seen onstage, costume plays a very important part in our understanding

of a character’s age, social class and rank and, most important, the

production’s attitude to the character. On the simples level, kings wear

crowns, soldiers wear uniforms, poor people dress in rags; the simple is

often a good starting point. However, costume, like all the other design

basics, depends on an overall design concept, and this comes from

collaboration.

Pantomime Costume

Pantomime costume can be collected for bring about personality to the

dresses used for a variety of events. Mime artists act in dramatic

performances and show a story using only their look, without using talk.

So, dressing up, a mime artist is sure to make an individual unique. The

ideas can be realize very easily with the use of simple dresses.

1. What did it look like?

The Basic Pantomime costume’s color is dark color, which are black, white

and gray. The British traditional mime costumes wear a black and white

striped shirt or black turtleneck, paired with black trousers and black

shoes. A black beret, white gloves and black. However, the modern

pantomime costumes wear a colorful shirt. The almost the Pantomime

costumes wear copy from everything, for examples, Disney, animals,

famous statues and etc.

2. What types of costumes in Pantomime?

Principal boy, Panto Dame, Animals, Hunt, Dancers, children ,sound of

music costume, Teddy boys, Disney , Irish, Lion King, Babes and others.

3, Can we make a Pantomime Costume?

A Pantomime costume is really simple to make own costume but it’s not

necessary to make from sew a costume. Because it’s too hard to make so

almost all pantomimer didn’t make them selves. In fact, mime costumes

can be easily purchased from various shops and online store. It can also

be prepare at home.

4. What types of costume did Principal boy wear?

The Principal Boy's costume is usually quite meager, showing plenty of leg

above knee - or thigh-length boots (pantomime is not generally known for

its "political rightness")

Principal boy

Nearly always played by the prettiest female in the cast. And is

traditionally portrayed as the essence of childhood and innocence. The

Principal Boy usually is called leading to sing a solo. And always ends up

"living happily ever after" with the Principal Boy.

5. What types of costume did The Panto Dame wear?

They wear big make up and big hair, have overstated physical skin, and

perform in a melodramatic style. The Panto Dame also wears two-piece

costumes comprising skirts with separate tops.

The Panto Dame almost always played by a man in drag; the Panto dame

is a comic, and camp, female character. She's usually an older woman but

she is the Ugly Sisters are Panto dames.

Halloween

If being used for a horror production or for Halloween, the mime

costume's scare factor can be increased by adding fake blood to the shirt

or other parts of the body, such as the neck.

Bip

Bip is a mime made by Marcel Marceau who is Pantomimer and artist. Bip

is known for wearing a top hat with a flower sticking and a short jacket.

These can be added to the traditional mime costume of whiteface, black

shirt, shoes and pants.

The pair of Japanese comic performers is Gamarjobat. They are traveling

to a lot of countries. They are one of the famous pantomimer in Japan;

they often perform out of the country to review. And they have even won

awards at arts festivals in Britain and other countries. They are success

performing in the United Kingdom, other countries, winning awards at the

Edinburgh Festival Fringe.

Company

The Pantomime Company

This is a company dedicated to the art of traditional British Pantomime.

Based at the Concordia Theatre, Hinckley (one of the finest amateur

theatres in the United Kingdom), the company produces the annual

spectacular traditional pantomime at the venue. This company is playing

for 26 performances the shows every time draw full houses.

The Abergavenny Pantomime Company

The Abergavenny Pantomime Company is the oldest Pantomime Company

in Wales. And was honest back in 1932, which was known before then as

‘The Holy Trinity Company’. Its main performance is a traditional

pantomime in order to money for local charities. They pantomimes are

generally performed during half-term week in February each year.

The Pantomime costume is really simple because of color. British

Traditional Pantomime used black and white for their costumes. And one

of the famous pantomimer who is Marcel Marceau made Bip. It’s very

helpful to performance Pantomime. It makes really dynamic and real. In

the world people used that Pantomime costume in Halloween the most.

When I researched in Google, I typed Pantomime Costume then the list

was all about Halloween. Pantomime costume and Normal theatre

costume are not different. It doesn’t have strenght point in Pantomime

costume so I wanted see effective of Pantomime costume.
